I've never managed to learn to like coffee. That bitter bean juice is just nasty. I like Tony's just ever so slightly smug-but-in-a-friendly-way expression. I interpreted it as a genuinely friendly expression, no smugness attached.

So Tony's special ability is making nuclear coffee? I think it's actually insta-hair styling

Now that I think about it, did Tony share the special brew with Kat? Heck did toss her an apple at a random time and she failed to catch it?
Also, I didn't get to drink coffee regularly until I was a teen, but even before hand my dad would share some sips from his cup.

I pegged Surma and Tony as "older than Annie but still in school"-age. 17/18 maybe? It's hard to tell.
Could it be that people who hate the taste of coffee just have more sensitive taste receptors (or something) which makes it impossible for them to get used to and enjoy the taste? Have you guys tried coffe with milk and/or sugar? Is there any difference? I know some coffee purists who will cringe at the thought but I enjoy all combinatios of coffee/milk/sugar.

Might have helped that having it from time to time at a young age meant my taste buds easily became accustomed to coffee (black or flavored). Funny thing about my reading of this strip is that I've actually engaged in viewing some interesting Foldgers commercials online. One is a Christmas commercial with a brother and sister who are really close. Another is a string of ads from the 60s where it reminds us of a woman's duty to make coffee for her husband and how until Foldgers they apparently couldn't do that right. But hey, that's definitely a brownie point for Tony. Making the coffee himself and letting the lady balk at the taste .

This makes me wonder, what if Tony and Jimmy Jims had a chance to also bond? Clearly the only thing necessary is for him to be alone with someone else (Donny in the dorms, Surma now in the work trip), and Tony doesnt seem so far like he wouldnt be able to handle Eglamores physical activity regime due to his work (ok he doesnt fight ether powered beings, but still hes doing reasonably well in the jungle and managed to do a wilderness world trip on his own to see Surma again). Chances are that over the years they couldve easily done some outdoors activity together. Hell, even solve the residential mystery after being the only ones left. My point is that its weird that considering they seem kind of similar with the new evidence its weird they hadnt had that much time to be just by themselves (And yes this also applies to Tony/Brinnie being a thing if the group hadnt been together as the group the whole time) My impression was that Surma was indifferent towards Tony before, but Eglamore straight up didn't like him, and thus avoided getting stranded alone with Tony somewhere. Plus, (and feel free to shoot me down here) James just strikes me as the kind of person who doesn't easily change his mind about people he dislikes; even if he did get into a situation alone with Tony, I'm betting he could still find plenty of things to argue about.

Oh, Annie... Tony didn't brainwash your mother. It was much worse than that... He made her coffee. I have been thinking that the next page will be Annie interjecting with: "Wait! Wa-it! What was it he gave my Mum?" Whatever it was, I like how its effects persist in Surma's hairstyle.

As a non-coffee-drinker, I was really, really puzzled by panels 4-6 until I came here and read the comments. Thanks for clearing that up for me. My initial guess (based on Surma's "mind blown" reaction + the expressions in the final panel): love potion.

Also: Does anyone else find it weird how Tony is casually sitting on the edge of Surma's bed while she's asleep? Everyone has different standards, I guess... but I would never do that, unless the other person was a very close friend or family member. I know Tony loosens up one-on-one, but this seems too loose.

I forget what the line over the two dots means? My guess was that it's the logo of the Gunnerkrigg Court skateboarding team. also didn't realize how much watching a person under 18 drink coffee would trigger my puritan american values. Hopefully its tea. Bug Tea. I don't know why it would be an issue, or how you know it's coffee, or how you know they are under 18. Whatever it is, it's one heck of an energy drink - it even gave her a completely different hairdo. 1. Its not really a problem just my quasi Mormon upbringing... you're not really supposed to drink coffee (but you can) and kids are deff not allowed to drink coffee. 2. she is drinking it from a coffee cup 3. I guess I don't really know their age, I'm probably totally wrong. It just seems like this is something that happened before the whole Renard thing. The Renard thing happened while the bunch was still wearing school uniforms. Surma is blushing at Tony just watching her. She is clearly not the Surma who seduced a Fox God.

2. she is drinking it from a coffee cup I think it is coffee, or at least it's not ordinary tea, but that's just as easily a tea mug in britain (we normally drink tea from teabags in mugs not from teapot into teacups) 3. I agree, it's hard to imagine this is after the episode with Renard, but I don't think this is uniform. If they are not still secondary school students, it's possible that maybe this is a kind of university program within the court. They're not in uniforms, so they're in sixth form or older, but I am definitely still getting a major 'student' vibe here. (For example, it doesn't seem that Surma needed anyone's permission to come, only for Tony's superior to allow it, so she's neither a child nor expected to be working somewhere.) But I bet with the court being so research-oriented and not really in need of resources that there's going to be a lot of overlap between court jobs and former students still there and studying

Personally, I have tried coffee with varying amounts of sugar and/or cream and don't find it helps. I figure, at that point why am I trying so hard to drink this stuff? It also took me a long time to like tea, but the difference is I did eventually get to like it. A lot. I have tea all the time now. I HAVE had coffee ice cream and liked it, especially if chocolate was also involved. If I'm really in a bind and need a caffeine boost, a little coffee in my hot chocolate is really good.

I think he just sat down, waking her up with the motion of the bed, which could be considered less private space-invadey than shaking her by the shoulders and shouting that the zombies are coming (which is the only alternative).

The secret ingredient is bugs. also didn't realize how much watching a person under 18 drink coffee would trigger my puritan american values. Hopefully its tea. Bug Tea. 18? Around here it's common for people to start drinking coffee in middle school. I think the last panel really highlights the differences between Annie and Surma. You couldn't catch Annie in a pose like that.

Plus, (and feel free to shoot me down here) James just strikes me as the kind of person who doesn't easily change his mind about people he dislikes; even if he did get into a situation alone with Tony, I'm betting he could still find plenty of things to argue about. At the end of Quicksilver, he did invite Renard (who killed Sivo -- if possibly in fear for his own life -- and whom he described as a "demon" and "criminal" to Antimony) into his house almost tacitly. The difference is, of course, that he never liked Tony at any point, whereas Renard described Eglamore as "an old friend" to Hetty. Pouring milk into coffee can prove strangely difficult.

Also, I wonder if Tony's special brew or any coffee in Gunnerkrigg continuity can temporarily give one super speed upon drinking 100 servings due to a tax refund.

My impression was that Surma was indifferent towards Tony before, but Eglamore straight up didn't like him... Possibly, though I suspect that Tony didn't really show up a great deal on either Surma or James's radar (besides being one of their 'group') prior to this point. I'm also starting to wonder if at least some of what we've heard about Tony prior to "The Tree" hasn't been coloured by James's bitterness at "losing" Surma to Tony.

Aw, c'mon, Tony! You know she didn't have any dinner last night, because she fell asleeep before you could even start cooking. So you wake her up, hand her a cup of coffee and say "Let's get going!", and get her on the road without even any breakfast? Harsh.
Or do we just have to assume they had breakfast somewhere between panels 6 and 7?

Tony's special brew eliminates the need for breakfast.
