At least now we know she wasn't joking about it, but really got that scatter-brained for a while. And yeah, it's probably her spiced-up version - this goes beyond Surma's (impulsive and expressive) norm, she acts like one of the Foley kids here. "I was all cringing and biting my own hat, haha!"

I just now realized: Tony has a driving license. Surely that must help us to determine the chronological position of this flashback? (I do not know what the required age to drive is in the UK, though.)

How old exactly are the characters in this scene, do you think? Any good guesses?
I know The Court is more permissive about some things than what we'd expect a modern, realistic organization would be, but letting a couple of teenagers go off in the woods all alone for at least a month seems like it's tempting either a Tarzan or Lord of the Flies type of situation. And given that we know how this ends up....

Looks to me like the gang is real groovy. I'd put them in the 70s, though there was a 50s/60s vibe when Jim was picked up by Jones to go to Gunnerkrigg. It's probably not exact science, but we can always nitpick over the make and model of the plane/car we see this chapter.

(I do not know what the required age to drive is in the UK, though.) Around 16 is the UK age for a learner's permit sort of thing. But this is Brazil, so Tony might be younger; he's clever enough to know how to drive young. But they look older to me than Annie does in our current timeline; so I'm guessing they probably are about 16 or 17 years old.

Until Tom actually gives us a time cue we have no idea at all. They could be full adults working for the Court at this point.

Anyone else concerned that some insects could get burned if Surma freaks out? Oh, and there is the possibility of meeting local natives who have never had contact with the outside world. Things could get very adventurous. An interest in language could come in handy. But on that point, we haven't ever seen Surma use her firepower the way Annie did in Crash Course or The Torn Sea. Did she ever develop her abilities in the same way, with or without a blinker stone? Does this somehow play into Kat's point about the psychopomps maybe skipping over Surma to get at Annie? I mean I suppose she's got to have some degree of flame-on ability, I'll just be interested to see if we find out how much. (Also when is Annie going to start shooting fireballs again? I want fireballs!) As to time - Surma's already working in the forest, so surely they must at least be close to graduation, if not already working for the court; it was pointed out somewhere along the line that Smitty and Annie and Parley were a bit young to be appointed Medium, though that might have been in the forums. Edit: Wooooohoooo junior member!

Also remember, whatever Anja thinks of Surma in general, she thinks it was stupid of Surma to fall for Tony.
So she would tend to tell of that budding romance in a way that makes Surma look stupid.

Surma being eeked out by bugs feels off to me. Shouldn’t she have gotten used to them in the forest?

Man... I miss seeing Annie on an adventure. Surma's expressiveness, her genuine reactions and low-stakes overreactions to the circumstances are really charming. Annie's personal growth ought to come in at some point, and that's what we've gotten a lot of, but this is refreshing compared to the Annie-gets-hit-with-consecutive-drama/feels-bombs spectacle. If my suspicions are close, I think this is where the narrative is going. Annie's last "adventure" (freeing Jeanne) ended up not only with Annie having to pledge to the Psychopomps, but Red's response on top of that amplifying her sense of self-doubt (which Tony's return pushed to the front) further. I have a strong feeling that the current story is going to hinge on Surma's character development from being somewhat passive (albeit inwardly passionate) towards taking charge of her own destiny and the consequences of her decisions. Whether Annie will realise this immediately is in the hands of the creator...
