Why wouldn't Kat have told her about this before? Are they growing apart because they're not in the same class anymore? That's the main thing that's concerned me about this story. Even if not as much time has passed as people have argued based on Annie's current look (the longer hair and summer t-shirt), Kat's change towards Anthony (especially given how intense her dislike of him was before) couldn't have taken place overnight. (Short of the "mind control" theory that imaginaryfriend brought up. Kat does have an odd look in her eyes - but I agree with imaginaryfriend that it wouldn't fit the mood of the comic as well.) Given the warmth of interaction the last time we saw them together, I doubt Kat and Annie have been drifting apart. Nor do I get the impression that Annie is more than seriously gobsmacked by her best friend joking with her worst enemy like this. As are we all. Back story would certainly be appreciated.

Well, obviously it wasn't some kind of big secret they intended to keep forever, since Kat is going "guess you know now", and they were meeting in her lab in the middle of the day. Several possibilities : - Kat didn't talk about it for similar reasons than when she didn't talk about Paz. She was somewhat afraid of how Annie would react, and because of that had a chronic case of "not finding the right moment", despite not intending to keep it a secret - Kat was asked to keep the whole Arthur/Juliet thing from everyone, even Annie. Working on Tony's hand is a lie, or at least a half truth, and Kat is uncomfortable with not telling Annie everything so preferred not to broach the subject at all.

I suspect that (as long as Annie doesn't have a conniption first) it is Storytime™ for Kat.
I also suspect that the story may involve Kat's science class, Tony's brilliant medical background (which Kat must find comes in handy, remember in the past she has mostly been shown as an electrical and computer/engineering genius in the physical sciences), and perhaps some dialogue with Donny, who is probably still friends with Tony. I doubt very much Kat changed her mind about Tony (known best-friend-abuser) quickly.
Tom seems to like the framed narrative format, so it wouldn't surprise me if many parts of this chapter were Kat-narrated flashbacks.

Annie may have told Kat what Annie learned when she spied on her father and Donny. Kat may know that Tony regrets a lot but can't admit that to anyone except Donny.

On that note, is there anyone here who was never unnerved at some point during their adolescence by a parent/parents getting along too well with a friend? I don't think I was ever unnerved by my parents getting along with my friends*, no. I liked my parents; I liked my friends. If they didn't get along well, I'd have been disappointed. On the other hand, I never had the experience of my parents getting along better with my friends than with me. That would be unnerving. *All three of them, that is. She was somewhat afraid of how Annie would react, and because of that had a chronic case of "not finding the right moment", despite not intending to keep it a secret Ooh, yes. Been there, done that. Results were not pleasant when I finally had to spill the beans.

Well, not that "better than Tony gets along with Annie" is very much. Although Tony and Annie do get along better than Tony and Eglamore. By the way, not really related, but: Weeks, probably months have passed in-comic, and still no sight or mention of Renard. I thought we would learn his perspective on the Jeanne business, but instead, timeskip. What's up with him? :\

I love (or maybe hate?) how Annie's mind immediately jumps to "Well, that's not my Kat, so my dad must have DONE something to her." Maybe her own view of her father isn't quite as stellar as she usually projects. Also, panel 2: looking directly into the camera like on The Office. Good stuff. 'Cause it's not like it's been Kat who's hated him the whole comic with Annie defending and making excuses for him at every turn or anything.... Exactly. But I guess for her, Tony messing with Kat's head is crossing the damn line, the point where she just can't defend him anymore. Her only friend in the world and he's brainwashing her? Unacceptable!

I think Annie was unconsciously relying on Kat to be angry at Tony for her. Now that she doesn't have Kat to channel her "how could he do this!!" feelings, she's going to have to come to terms with them herself. YES. All of this. All her emotional defenses against her father's abandonment of her are falling down. Now that he's returned in the most most awful, unsympathetic way possible, she can't pretend that he doesn't exist nor can she look forward to his happy return. She can't believe that, " he had his reasons", because she's seen his reasons, and they're pretty terrible reasons that hardly even have anything to do with her. With her blinker stone gone, she can't magically exorcise her own anger. And ever since Chapter 60, she can't even distract herself with the mission to free Jeanne. Kat's sudden turnaround may become the last straw for her.

I agree, a bit of time has passed since Annie last saw Kat. Since then she had the visit with the Shadow Men, a meet with Tony and work on the project. I wouldn't sell Kat's humanity short. If she's working with Tony on a new hand she'll had had to examine his current condition. That would not have been easy. An amputation under the best circumstances leaves leaves a person with a condition that can be hard to look at. Tony's one handed field operation had to have been grisly even if he got help afterward. I can see Kat's compassion coming into play when confronted with the reality of Tony's condition. She also might be taking the long view. Helping Annie's dad would be helping Annie. Besides Kat knows how much Annie loves her dad. Annie's reaction to this might be from her world suddenly changing again. Not only does Kat not hate her dad but they seem to have a friendly relationship. There could be a touch of jealousy that Kat has a better relationship with her dad than she herself does. Ouch! I suspect you're correct. There was no buildup to this whatsoever. It's like going to go drinking with a friend and suddenly he says he's moving to a new country before even leaving said friend's house, and no alcohol to compensate yet.

The time skip montage a couple pages ago was weird, though. Annie's hair even grew. Didn't Kat and Anne meet at all during that whole time? Or they have met, but Kat simply failed to mention being working with Annie's dad? I guess she didn't mention the bizarre partnership out of fear of Annie's reaction. Thus possibly making it worse. About Annie, I think she grew a lot about this. About Kat, I think that, possibly, their passion FOR SCIENCE! drew them together amicably DESPITE their obvious differences. Next up, Kat and Tony become a couple, driven to love by their love FOR SCIENCE! Paz threesome imminent.
