Ugh, this was so unsatisfying. No questions answered whatsoever. I swear, Tom, you leave us hanging too much! IMO, it answered two questions: - How will Annie react to finding Anthony in Kat's workshop? - How will Anthony react to Annie showing up in Kat's workshop? Answer: awkwardly. We already knew that. It didn't answer how Kat managed to get past her grudge and start getting along with Tony, or how Annie didn't know about this despite some time passing already. That's what I meant. But it's not like I expect to learn it immediately on the next page. I was actually expressing my enjoyment of the comic. If Tom can do things in a non-straightforward way, so can I. >.>

It didn't answer how Kat managed to get past her grudge and start getting along with Tony, or how Annie didn't know about this despite some time passing already. Both of which seem like real challenges to answer - especially the second. Given how intense Kat's dislike for Antony was, it would have taken a while of working with him to change her mind about him - which raises the question of how it took Annie this long to find out about it. (Unless she'd been away from the Court for a while and been unable to commuicate with Kat - which is extremely unlikely.)

Here's the exact transcript of Annie's thoughts at this moment:
"What. The frack."

How horrible it is that a guy who court is trying to control for their Omega project doesn't act in way that would put his daughter in danger as leverage against him. So this one ultimately is yet another result of his hubris being subcontracted to build his world-view? Makes sense. I just had a wildspec theory: Anthony just visited Kat for the first time in her workshop, but they had been communicating anonymously via online chat for weeks now, and THAT'S how she came to learn he secretly is a decent dude. Communicated about what? Anime? And if it's anonymous, how it does matter? As their eloquent discussion of the mystery dinner IMHO clearly shows, at this time Kat still had "How to say this delicately?.. Nope, there's no way to say this delicately..." approach to any issues that have anything to do with Anthony.

I was browsing the opportunity-thread and stumbled upon this gem from half a year ago: I thought: Carver! Bio-prosthetics! Controller Kat! And the images fitted like a glove, so...

Which would still leave the the question open how on Earth could Tony make Kat get along with him? Dude must have some "friendship is magic" up his sleeve...after all he got Surma to love him! She may not have hated him (they were in the same circle of friends after all) but he doesn't seem like the type able to woo the fiery Surma as presented.

You know, I was rereading the last page, as one does. And I'm thinking, that hug is gonna be quite something when it finally happens. The hug between Annie and her father that is a long time coming, since the very beginning of the story. That's gonna be some hug.

I played around with the notion that Kat might have been subjected to some sort of mind control, but Tom's more likely to make it natural character change.

Tony has been Kat's science teacher since the beginning of the academic year. And she's one of the most brilliant scientists among the students. That would tend to push them into closer association.

Nope, there's no way to say this delicately..." approach to any issues that have anything to do with Anthony. About her project, of course. That it is anonymous matters in the sense that one day they agreed to meet in person, and Kat realized the cool guy she had been chatting with all the time was actually Anthony. And of course I know this is higly unlikely. That's why I called it a "wildspec" theory.

About her project, of course. But it's kind of secret. Which some of the local security discovered in a way that allows them to keep it hidden. Kat knows about the tracking thing and explicitly distrusts the Court personnel until proven (individually) trustworthy. Why would she discuss this online from the Court? Generally security ends at hardware access, after all.

She just doesn't run around bragging about them (like her antigrav unit). I always perceived her as not thinking of her work as anything in need of being hidden (in fact, Juliette only named hiding Shadow 2 and leaving the school grounds as forbidden activities). And even if it is secret, Juliette said that her "colleague" wished to work with Kat, so said colleague obviously knew already about her work. Also, she has been shown to use hardware to text with others.

Is it really that secret? Between her reaction and Juliette's worries, seems to be. I always perceived her as not thinking of her work as anything in need of being hidden (in fact, Juliette only named hiding Shadow 2 and leaving the school grounds as forbidden activities). Maybe, but then again, there's a difference between explicitly forbidden and probably opening several bags of trouble. And even if it is secret, Juliette said that her "colleague" wished to work with Kat, so said colleague obviously knew already about her work. Good point, but that's not clear whether others know and to what degree. In this case anonimity is not an issue at all. And it can be secure in general, since both of the end points themselves are in their hands. It's still as secure as the hardware - but this would involve taking one of their toys, and Kat just didn't have variants immune to this without opening another can of worm. As far as we can tell, those are walkie talkies she made herself, in which case there's nothing but the pieces in Kat's and Annie's possession in the first place. Even if not (the Court doesn't look like a very radio-friendly environment, even when HUGE WEB OF LIGHTNINGS is off)... It's for emergency use, thus even if it's school wi-fi, there's nothing to see until it's needed, and taking a page from her father's book (wrapping it in OTP) is an option, if she's concerned with secrecy. Though it doesn't even need to be school network - she can piggyback on the robots' wireless net (mentioned by adminbot and almost certainly known to Kat by now), in which case it would be hard to tell apart from the normal traffic, let alone mess with it. Especially given that the Court's humans generally leave robots alone, and the route itself is very unstable.

You're analyzing this too much, I fear, I just wanted to show that Kat is not adverse to texting.

And you don't know what crazy stuff the other science fair winners have been building - Good point about Jack. We haven't seen him create anything as impressive as Kat's artificial limbs, but we probably haven't seen his best work either.
- Kat's parents don't count because the original statement was "among the students."
- Do you mean the other science fair entrants? (There was just one winner, Kat.) No, we don't know about their careers since then, but the projects that are mentioned seem pretty ordinary--except Zimmy's, but who knows what that was. As far as we know, she hasn't pursued a technological hobby since then.
(But yes, I am also analyzing this too much.)

(But yes, I am also analyzing this too much.) True, we haven't seen him create something big and crazy like Kat. I was sort of extrapolating. Mainly I was thinking of how while trapped in the Cruise Ship he managed to build a functioning multicopter drone in the course of one or two hours seemingly without any real equipment. I don't think Kat could have done better in the same circumstances, so I just assume Jack is on an equal level. The part "among the students" I missed. ^^° I did not mean the other entrant of this science fair (indeed they did not seem to have anything remotely on the level of Kat's project), but I always understood it like there is a science fair at the school every year. So, naturally, every year there must be some other winner with something awesome.
