The sun is a mass of incandescent gas a gigantic nuclear furnace where hydrogen is built into helium at a temperature of millions of degrees

Yes, yes. This is good. What other facts about the sun would people like to tell me?

The sun is a creature of fire and death that casts its deadly rays down upon the globe. It burns and blackens. It twists and mutates. Oh deliver us from our deadly star oh lord!

Without the sun, without a doubt, there'd be no you and me. And therefore, by your own theory, the same goes for you, Coyote.

Yes, yes. This is good. What other facts about the sun would people like to tell me? A human-sized piece of the Sun's core would feel cool to the touch. The light from the Sun's core travels slower than most snails and some glaciers, (but faster than bamboo grows).

The light (at gamma ray energies) travels near the speed of light inside the sun, (can not find refractive index tables for a star's core funnily enough) it's just that it get's reabsorbed and reemitted so many times in so many different directions, that it looks like it travels slower.

The light from the core of the sun (that is the photon radiation) is what keeps the sun from collapsing in on itself from the gravity of its mass. The photons are literally knocking matter back and preventing the core from collapsing completely. On larger stars, larger and larger nuclei fuse together until you eventually get to Iron, which doesn't fuse. This drops the emitted energy to a level low enough for gravity to 'win', causing the core to collapse and the outer shells of the star to 'bounce' from the sudden increase in energy produced by the degeneration of the matter (a supernova). The sun, however, will not do this because when Helium starts to fuse, the push from the photons from the core will be too strong for gravity to contain it anymore and will cause the outer layers to be pushed away from the core (the red giant phase).

The same effect that causes the sky to appear blue tints the color of the sun to the naked eye. Thus, you and I have never seen the Sun's true, unfiltered color. It's actually purple
