Etheric sword blow to the etheric head. What would we see if we looked at Ayilu in the ether? The problem I have with this is that Jeanne and Parley were fighting with their real/ghost swords in the real world, just with the cover of an illusion. This wasn't a "we're in the ether" moment. Blu-ilu simply has the power to cast an illusion. She didn't get stabbed in the etheric head, she got hit in an illusory head. I imagine the illusion fell because Ayilu, being in the illusion herself, panicked because she thought she was being stabbed. Now that's what ought to be breaking her mind. Red's PTSD is seeing her friend get run through, Ayilu's is having had the illusion of being killed (involuntarily this time). maybe Jeanne's weapon can only cause physical harm on "her" side of the river? Having "illegally" crossed the river to confront Annie, perhaps her weapon was only capable of leaving etheric marks..... (this is a variant on Druplesnubb's idea above) The formspring search for Jeanne is a curious thing. Here's the most curious thing I find. But here and here are a couple relevant quotes. Jeanne was the only thing preventing anyone from crossing. People said "She ought not be able to cross." Because they had no idea she was the thing keeping people from crossing. And yet... apparently there was some rule and authority in place to tell Jeanne she isn't supposed to cross. It's curious. Her crossing the river via whatever ghost powers she has ought not really interfere all that much with her ability to slice and dice, I wouldn't think =/ Just float on over, off with the head, float on back.

It was a very particular wound that Jeanne inflicted on Annie. It seemed intended more as a mark than the usual death stabbity.
It appears to have served its purpose*, since wiping it off was Jeanne's last act.
*a reminder to her rage ghost side that this group were trying to help?

(The "free Jeanne" group hadn't even formed at that point...) Had she seen the robot toss her from above, after Annie went to meet/help it? Did she see/sense Annie trying to help the fairies? The placing of the mark meant Jeanne did single out Annie as special in some way... Or was it just a "test scratch" - is this being (bourne to Earth by Tick-tocks!) mortal?

Poor Red. I went through the same thing with my cat when he got really really sick. I'd wake up in the middle of the night to touch him and check that he was still breathing. Finally he got sick enough that I had to put him down some months ago But it sucks to worry about the safety of a loved one. Worst kind of pain. oooh, I hear ya. We fostered cats with FELV (feline leukemia virus) for a number of years because they are so hard to place (fatal illness, shortened lives). Currently taking a break for a while... some would get adopted, but some wouldn't, and the losses took their toll on our hearts...

We fostered cats with FELV (feline leukemia virus) for a number of years because they are so hard to place (fatal illness, shortened lives). Currently taking a break for a while... some would get adopted, but some wouldn't, and the losses took their toll on our hearts... My cat was FIV+, I feel your pain. At first I thought after him I would get another FIV or FELV cat, but when it came to I just couldn't do all that again so soon, it worried me emotionally and financially. Ziggy was his name – he was the sweetest cat, but his fur was always mangled, no matter what I did, because of his illness, and he would throw up all the time. He needed special food because he had all his teeth taken out due to side-effects of the FIV on his gums. It took the vet a year to realize he had a Thyroid condition, which I got him treatment for. Eventually he got cancer and that's what caused the ultimate downspiral. I did my best for him throughout but it definitely ruined my ability to sleep through the night. My current cat is Deaf, but otherwise very healthy. I don't really resent it when she wakes me up at 6am for food because the alternative is much less fun to think about.
