I doubt it. The wound's been consistently portrayed near the center of his chest - near/through his sternum. His liver should be lower. This is where cartoon anatomy makes it tough. Going by what it looks like in #1774 I'd agree with you that it's too high for liver. The crossguard appears to be touching his chin. [edit] ...which would put the blade into the left ventricle, maybe. [/edit] But this update it is (unless I am seeing things) consistently drawn perhaps 4 inches lower, maybe a bit more. Either way, missed the left lung. Since theres no pink foam, it missed the lung. Must be under the diaphragm then, maybe *just* below the end of the sternum (and the heart!). That would put the blade going into the left lobe of the liver (most of the liver is under the right part of the diaphragm, but a small lobe of it extends into the center). might have cut into the lower part of the esophagus (this is near where it enters the stomach). If Smitts has any luck left, it has missed the aorta, which is in behind all that.

Another stab (heh) at a "save the eyebrows" scenario:
Mr. Green over there is rapidly regenerating. I don't know how. But maybe he can give Smits a little loan of some of that? Just a few teaspoons should do considering the wonders it's working already.

Yeah, pretty much... Calling Dr. Carver to Emergency... Actually, if they wanted to keep this a secret from the Court until the bitter end, Anthony might be a good choice. Or at least he might have been, had he not lost his dominant surgeon hand: Annie knows his apartment is surveillance free, and she could emotionally blackmail her father into secrecy, if she really wanted to. Parley could bip Annie into the medical supply room where she nicked that scalpel once, for, you know, supplies... ah, no, I guess she needs Smitty for precision bipping... Ugh, c'mon Smitty, what are you taking about? Lucky? How is it lucky for the Court Protector trainee to end up with a dead Court Medium on her watch. It was her duty to take that knife. But I guess bedinsis might be right, with an unconscious/delirious/dead Parley, the gang would be stuck down there, even if Jeanne wasn't a threat anymore. Smitty just saved all a'yall. Oh, what a half cooked plan this was... orz

She might get in some trouble for carelessness, and some might be suspicious (thinking about *you*, Jones), but it would save Annie and Kat from major consequences.

Another possibility, since Kat already surprised Annie with unexpected powers, would be for Annie to surprise us with an unexpected power. Annie burns the knife in a flame of healing, destroying the knife and returning Smitty to life. It's either that, or we get a full-out major character death

Is the Court that easy to fool, though? Couldn't they then just say: "The surveillance footage of the training room doesn't show what you described"? Of course they wouldn't be as direct as that. They kept their knowledge of Annie's cheating a secret for several years to use as blackmail material. Also, what would happen to the ghost dagger? It'll probably disintegrate once Jeanne passes on, so then we have a wound with no corresponding weapon. Rather suspicious. Go to Anthony, I say! It's been so long since we last saw his pretty face!

I'm... still holding my breath here, I guess. As many have commented, if they don't try to bring him somewhere for medical attention ASAP purely for the sake of Rule of Drama, that'll be kinda silly. And unlike Tom, I guess? Also as has been pointed out, he's still spitting bullshit in the page comments. Though I wouldn't put it past him to subvert HIMSELF there. Though maybe that'd be a bit too meta for him.
Of course there's always the possibility that the wound is even worse than we think and he literally dies on the next page, giving them no time to actually do anything about it. Though that seems like it'd be out of line with his current ability to run his mouth.
Long story short, if he does die, it'd better feel like everybody did everything they could to prevent it.

If he must die, then let him die the way he lived. As a total playa. Preaching, brother! The best comment for a dying dude.

Okay, so there is blood. And Smitty is talking the way a fictional character would talk when death is approaching. Instead of doing the reasonable thing and teleporting away as soon as possible. I remind hopeful that that will be done in the next page, but I'm increasingly believing that it is a fool's hope. I disagree. To me, the fact that this is APPALLINGLY CLICHÈ signals that this is something to be subverted, not the actual death scene of a beloved character. EDIT: am I wrong? Do I have a distorted idea of this comic, or does this feel off to anybody else in here? This feels... very off, but I'm not overly optimistic. I kind of feel that the quality of writing's gone down since Tony got back, and I legitimately don't know what this means for the characters in the comic. So this is essentially a flip of the coin.

I'd be willing to bet the whole Jeanne thing has something to do with the Omega project. Anthony would be a good choice right now. Also, has Eglamore given Annie or Parley a beacon stick? they might need one. even if it's just to get out of the ravine after all is said and done, whatever way that might be.

Wooooooooooow...
Also, anyone else noticing that Smitty's vision is getting progressively blurrier? In panels 5, 6 and 8, his vision of Parley's shirt goes from lines drawn, to basic colour shapes, to vague outlines. I don't think that means Smitty is getting any better anytime soon.

You know what also would have been lucky? Andrew getting stabbed in a place that isn't full of blood. Hair? Theory: now we FINALLY find out about the surprisingly applicable powers of the member of the party who so far appeared to have no good reason to be there. I assume she tagged along with Blue. And the others didn't want to argue and thought her presence may help by making Blue would really want to show off as encouragement. Do your thing, Red. Whatever your thing happens to be. How would fearlessly mouthing off a murder-ghost help at this point? Smitty is... totally fine with this situation? Of course - she grabbed him again. A dagger in the chest isn't quite enough to kill that habit.

My take on the anatomical luck of the Smit: Chest without skin or musclesEstimated area of insertion - Note the heart, left liver, diaphragm, and left lung. Stuff behind the heart - Note that the descending aorta To miss all the major structures, get stabbed here. With the vertical nature of the blade insertion I don't think he can avoid laceration of the diaphragm or left liver lobe, but it is entirely possible to miss the vital structures depending on how low Tom has had Smit get hit.

Tom's comment didn't seem that humorous to me. It was just "Lucky". That could be taken as a serious comment in relation to the situation- Smitty actually was lucky, but not how we were anticipating. I wouldn't take it as an indication either way.
Also, the knife seems to shift position each strip, so I wouldn't extrapolate too much based on its position.

"Good reason", for values of "good" that don't include idle curiosity and being gay for Blue. A questionable definition of "good", for sure.

On the other hand, if Parley leaves with Smitty now, she's leaving the rest of the crew alone with Jeanne, who could cut everyone else up right quick. Sure, it looks safe at the moment, looks like it's going towards a happy reunion for Jeanne, but who knows what will actually happen? She could easily be set off into rage mode again. I wouldn't feel safe in that situation until Jeanne entered the RotD.

We removed the dagger [bad idea] and left it in the woods in our hurry..." (No Court-cams there...) Still, I totally agree, if they did this the Court would be very suspicious, but what could they say/do? And even then, suspicion would fall on Parley and Smitts, not on Annie and Kat. Not sure I want to see Tony's face that bad.... though it might set up some interesting story dynamic, where Tony could now really help (rather than damage) his daughter. They may sort of team up to expose/root out corrupt ether experiments in the Court(?)

Oh Smitts It's like Mort 2.0 over here. Then again, GC has always been about death, since page 1. Most of those deaths have happened off-screen; it may be time to see one on-screen... Still, another thing re: Surma's hairclip in the previous page, maybe some hope that green guy will resolve some of our issues --- "Remember I will never send you into danger"
