Ugh. That's a lesson in building tension I suppose. Either way I wish I'd forgotten this comic existed for another two days.

Based on her expression, this page should be titled: "Ow, crap..." or eventually: "Oh, dear. This has never happened before..." (this is famous quote from " Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality" - which I recommend, BTW.)

Sorry for the reference, but I'm getting such a sinister, terrifying vibe from this that I had to make it.

And as Annie gets a better look, her eyes grow larger.

I am flipping out over here. Can't wait until Friday. Édit : if someone would be kind enough to tell me what's wrong grammaticaly with my first sentence, it would be awesome. "Daedalus must have read my mind at the exact moment when I saw today's page." That would work just fine. The inclusion of "when" isn't wrong, per say, just sounds awkward and extraneous. Also, I've been meaning to tell you that I love Bouletcorp (your avatar, right?) Sorry for the reference, but I'm getting such a sinister, terrifying vibe from this that I had to make it. What the actual hell? Surprised that's in an 'E' game like Paper Mario. Terrifying! ...I need to play those.

He can’t kill Annie. I don’t mean I believe he won’t. I mean it’s essentially impossible for him to. I disagree. Not only do I think it's possible, there are quite a few things Tom would be able to do in order to continue the story. All the ones I can think of boil down to everyone in the real world is devastated, but we get to see what it's like after death. Various entites in the comic have made references to a world beyond our own in which the dead reside, and I predict it will have an impact on the story.

Uh... has anybody thought about what is going to happen when that arrow stops keeping very pissed Jeanne anchored to the river? She may not be willing to go quietly into the good night, you know... she may decide to slaughter the whole Court before leaving.

Annie sees Boxbot Annie is in shock.
Boxbot: Hello. Annie: Why are you here?

Annie sees Boxbot Annie is in shock. I fully expect to see this in the 'shop thread soon, and if not, I will make it so.

Who wants to bet that the psychopomps never got to the... Fairy-guy's spirit either? or that annie has to guide him. or that it's only the arrow there, and jeanne was simply stuck in the ravine.
oh man.

$20 on a green-hued skeleton.
Tom, if you make it so he's just 'trapped in a certain state forever' and he's still that roguish looking handsome leaf-boy, I'm gonna be miffed. We need the horrors of mankind up in here.

I actually agree with you here. Of course she can die, if she somehow continues being the protagonist of the story after that. What I meant she can't possibly cease to exist as a character in the story. Keeping a character as a ghost (or anything similar) is not killing them, in my opinion. A character is only dead if they won't appear anymore.

Or Tom might decide to be daring enough to write out the original protagonist well before the end of the story and promote other characters to that role. He's "broken the rules" often enough in "Gunnerkrigg Court" that I wouldn't rule it out.

I mean we already know that he had plans for Zimmy and Gamma and could promote them in prominence, or Kat could be being set up as the Actual Main Protagonist of the second half of the comic. Do I think he will actually do that? No, probably not. But it's easily possible.

Do I think he will actually do that? No, probably not. But it's easily possible. Maybe, but I've never seen a story in which the protagonist actually dies halfway through, and never comes back. Such a thing happening is a logical paradox. I have seen a few in which the protagonist dies right at the end, though. When you tell a story, you’re always telling someone's story. If that person ceases existing, there is no story to tell anymore. Therefore, the moment the protagonist dies is by definition the end of the story. Of course, Annie could die for good, and Tom could start telling someone else’s story. However, I think it’s very clear Gunnerkrigg Court is Annie’s story. In that case, she can't possibly die (as in completely ceasing to exist) because, as I said, that would necessarily have be the end of the story. If she is going to die, it can only possibly be after the main story arc of GKC has been resolved. At least, that’s what I believe. I don't rule out the possibility that I might be proven wrong. A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones spoilers to follow. Before anyone mentions Game of Thrones (I don't know if anyone would, but I've had that same discussion a few times before, and people do tend to mention it), I'd like to point out that Eddard Stark was never the protagonist. He was a red herring. However, even if we consider him the protagonist of the first book, it’s worth noting that he only dies right at the end of the book. You know, after the plot has been resolved. The actual main character, Jon Snow, has died but came back. So, I see Game of Thrones as an example of storytelling that acutally proves my point. End of spoilers.Or Tom might decide to be daring enough to write out the original protagonist well before the end of the story and promote other characters to that role. He's "broken the rules" often enough in "Gunnerkrigg Court" that I wouldn't rule it out. Care to share some examples? Because I would argue that he has followed the few rules I consider universal to all storytelling very closely through the entirety of the comic. Your comment makes me feel we’ve been reading completely different comics, in fact.

I have seen a few in which the protagonist dies right at the end, though. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Three Kingdoms is a historical novel covering a period of over 100 years. All the main characters in the first section (the book is HUGE, running 1700 pages in some editions, so often published in multiple volumes) are already adults at the start, some of them with accomplishments and reputations strongly indicating that they are nearing old age. I've only read about the first third, but by that point several have died and I'm willing to bet that all of them are dead before the end.

warrl - I'm pretty sure that something is wrong with that link. Yeah, weird. When I put my mouse on it Firefox told me it pointed to a Gunnerkrigg Court page, so I went to edit it and the bbcode had the url of a pdf file. Switched to preview and back again, and the bbcode had no url at all. So I found another link and I think it's fixed now.
