"You're the only person who knows!" Are they making fun of Annie?!? Sorry, but how could everyone fall for their "We don't really like each other, but we sit together, cuddle and make up romantic stories" act they did back in the days (the sleepover)? Two people of opposite sex, who barely left the cooties age acting so and everyone considered it "just a joke"? Next page, Annie will gladly pretend to be Win's girlfriend to protect them. And Rey will cover for Janet of course.

The perfect opportunity? Because now Antimony gets to mollify her vengeful streak without being petty, getting into trouble or otherwise doing anything she would regret. Hiding in plain sight, and nobody suspects a thing! (Except Annie) Annie figured it out only in hindsight, and she spotted Parley*Smitty, so... And now Annie is asked to pretend to be William's girlfriend, as an elaborate scheme to hide the obvious. Or maybe that was the idea and they won't go through with it anymore. This seems to have been the idea. I wonder in how many details Annie would explain the depth and breadth of its awfulness. Because really, following a suggestion of Boxbot would be much safer. Who are the people in the last panel though? I can't recall off the top of my head. No idea, but their expressions remind me for some reason of Cookie & Jan. This page was the obvious conclusion that everyone on the forum refused to believe. That yes, everyone in Annie's class truly is that oblivous It was dismissed, probably somewhere around the point where they brought up the tricked out horse. Which would be funny: this particular detail may be actually true, and they all know it. Same deal with this. It was even on the Evil Overlord's list... Oh, great - got myself wondering whether Jonathan does the same and keeps that document on his table.

Because apparently if they behave like they're in a Shakespearean drama, so does everybody else; namely, they will overlook all clues regarding disguises, secret relationships etc. until someone explicitely spells it out. Funniest page in a while, made me laugh I do hope that Annie won't agree to be the fake girlfriend on the next page. It's time for the biggest court secret to be dragged into the open!

Annie's never seemed interested in romance and I'm glad that hasn't changed. There is that one time in "Annie in the Forest", which would seem to suggest otherwise. Though based on everything we've seen about Annie since, she might be only attracted to non-humans. Everyone wishing to avoid a love triangle, hope really hard that William isn't actually from the Forest.

Thread title should have been "Three hours long..." Yes! Or at least "are you... a couple?!", since "you two are a couple?!" does not appear on the page.

...this comic is stretching my suspension of disbelief. I mean, I can buy that Annie wouldn't understand, she is a bit unaware of social cues, but surely someone else connected the dots? Sometimes GC trashes realism for the sake of fun. This is one of these moments. Either you laugh at the absurdity of the situation or not, but this scene isn't supposed to be realistic or believable. It's just supposed to be hilarious.
They're already kissing in public and no one knows they're together, it doesn't look like they need urgent help to hide from anyone. Besides, you don't start the "do you want to be my fake girlfriend to hide my real one" conversation by telling someone how much you like and miss her. I think they rather need urgent help to go public. By the look of it, they could be walking together with a giant blinking sign stating "we're together" and people would go "what is this weird joke again?"
Although making out on the floor for five minutes does seem to work. Get out of that closet and go for it, people!

Next page, Annie will gladly pretend to be Win's girlfriend to protect them. First they better explain the reason for all this secrecy. At first their relationship seemed to be just a running gag but ever since Bud mentioned how the headmaster would freak out of it was true I've been curious about what is going on here. Just the silliness of teenagers or something more sinister?

Guys, this comic is silly and lighthearted sometimes. That's just the way it is/the way Tom wrote it. The running joke that nobody still knows about their relationship is one of the lighthearted aspects. That's all there is to it.

Yeah, I'll buy Annie being oblivious, but the rest od the class? Mrrmph. As lisanela suggested, I'm thinking the gang, possibly at the behest of the rest of the class to put a stop to these eye-rolling displays (public schmoopy is one thing, public schmoopy and trying to hide it is AGONIZING to watch), suggested that Willie ask Annie out knowing Janet would stop him and force them to go public. Still not cool to not let Annie in on it..............or did they off screen? ? hrmmm......

I feel like you could do an entire story with other GKC characters as the main focus and Annie as an ancillary character. I think it would be kind of amusing to see Annie play the Zimmy to someone like William and Janet's tragic forbidden romance.

As much as I was dumping on Tom's humor, I'm kinda glad this is just a joke episode. I'm still not exactly laughing hysterically here, but this could have been a lot more awkward.

Everyone wishing to avoid a love triangle, hope really hard that William isn't actually from the Forest. I honestly forgot about the bit with Kamlen, oops. Still, you could argue that a teenage summertime crush isn't the same thing as actual romantic feelings--you know, the whole difference between 'puppy love' and legitimate romantic attraction. Now that Annie's getting older and more mature, she might be growing out of that puppy love phase. (plus the whole 'Kamlen already has a girlfriend' thing kind of threw a wrench into Annie's fantasies)

Oh ok. So this is going to become THAT story, the fake relationship to hide the real one. I know Tom likes subverting tropes sometimes, I hope this is one of those times, I really hate this kind of story. I can definitely agree with that feeling- I don't like that kind of story, either. I really don't feel like it's headed in that direction, though. All they'd have to do in order to hide it is to just shrug and ask Annie to keep it discrete. William could just say it didn't feel right or that Annie had other things on her mind. There's no need for play-acting outside of making a couple narrative jokes.
Annie's likely a terrible actress, anyway.

I get that Annie didn't know, but why did Janet say "And you're the only person that knows!" Is that sarcasm? 'Cause I think this page www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=935 proves otherwise. Are they stringing along poor Annie? They followed that with an outlandish tale, and it appears no one believes them. EDIT: preus preempted me If I were in that situation, the outlandish tale wouldn't invalidate the new information. But comic book characters are allowed to think what they want I guess. *shrug*

So Sorry that some people don't take silly gags seriously enough for you. How is that the case? (more like the opposite) but don't take it so badly; I knew some people were gonna say that, but I was honestly just surprised at how many people said it. I mean it's like 1/4th of the comments on the page.

My guess is that will be how this particular running gag is ended. Other options: Now that she's figured out the Big Romantic Secret, she'll realize what Kat and the others are up to and get Janet and Will to help with a prank against them. Bonus guess: Annie manages a strike, with or without etheric assistance.

I seriously can't believe how many comments are all about: "What? I thought they all knew after Faraway Morning?", did they not read the following pages or what? Bear in mind that Faraway Morning happened a while ago and people aren't going to remember every nuanced bit of dialogue in the chapter. Plus, it's pretty easy to interpret the following pages as 'now everyone knows they're a couple but they don't believe that far-fetched story and it's not that big of a deal that they are a couple'. That's how I interpreted it at first. I also interpreted Bud's comment about 'they had me going for a while' as him making a joke about their street-racing-horse-racing story. Just because the readers know something, doesn't mean that the characters know it too. That's where part of the humor and suspense in a story comes from.

I will confess it took me a couple of reads of 'Faraway Morning' to get the Will&Jan thing, so I can't comment on others not getting it.
Lest people's imagination be stretched by the thought of Queslett sitting through a three hour wedding scene, it only lasted thirty seconds: long enough for Matt to walk across the stage bearing a placard saying "Three hours later..."
Annie took this literally.

I don't understand fully why there is such an emphasis on everything being Janet's fault. This would imply that it was somehow her idea, and not a prank devised by the gang. So I'm imagining something like this: Scene 1 Mr. Llanwellyn and Janet at dinner. Llanwellyn: So, daughter. About this 3 hour play of yours. Janet: Yes, father? Llanwellyn: I do hope you do not have amorous intentions for him..? Janet: Oh no, father! How could you believe such a thing? Llanwellyn: Or otherwise is he possibly interested in you? Janet: Not at all, father! He has devoted his love fully to [tries to think of girl. Margo? In a relationship. Kat? Paz? As well. Zimmy? Never. Which leaves...] Antimony Carver. Llanwellyn: Very well. Word reaches Kat's parents, Kat overhears her parents discussing this (or some other improbable chain of events leading to Kat knowing about it). Scene 2 Janet: Oh dearest William, I told my father you were in love with Annie! William: Wat. Meanwhile. Kat: Hey, William isn't in a relationship with Janet, as we all thought! He's in love with Annie! Gang: NO! Kat: YES! Scene 3 Gang: Let's go bowling, and you can propose to Annie! William: ... Janet: ... William: ...greeeat?
