I think I'm going to go look up what else this guy's written. :) My favorites are this one, "A Rose For Ecclesiastes", and the novel Lord of Light. "The Doors Of His Face, The Lamps Of His Mouth" is high on many lists, as is "The Furies". "Rose", "Doors", and "Furies" are collected together, along with "The Graveyard Heart", in Four for Tomorrow.I greatly enjoyed Jack of Shadows, and probably need to read it again. The Amber series is greatly loved by many, and is possibly his best known work. Lord of Light is, quite simply, one of those stories you must read if you wish to count yourself well-read. It is one of the stories Science Fiction was created to produce. Like the other Lord of story of note, it reads out loud very well indeed. And it contains one of the greatest puns of all time. Collect Zelazny recommendations as you will, but I can't urge you strongly enough not to seek out any reviews before reading. Seconded. There are stories by Roger Zelazny that I have not liked, but none that are badly told, that I have not enjoyed the reading of them. I would add to Ref's list of personal favourites A Night In The Lonesome October. It is not Lord of Light, but it is a cracking short read. And of course the novella Home is the Hangman is possibly on-topic...

Up to now, this was not something I had considered, but now I'm REALLY curious to meet the psychopomp responsible for dealing with those less biologically-inclined, shall we say? According to Muut, as of Chapter 8, there wasn't a psychopomp of robots. Some people think that Kat will become that psychopomp in the future, but for now, the common assumption is that there isn't one. Yet? Part of this issue is that no robot has truly died yet (at least by our standards; Robot has a differing perspective on the matter). After all, if a robot can be reactivated (as Kat did back in Chapter 33), its essence can't really have moved on to become one with the ether. And I'm not willing to accept robot chicken wings as entities needing a psychopomp. Again, to new readers, click on my signature to learn more about my thoughts on the matter What about the Tic-Toc from chapters 8 & 14?

Funnily enough, I saw a book by him today at a used computer store (next to a copy of Photoshop Elements 3, which was just about the newest software in the rack.) I don't remember the title - none of the ones listed on his wikipedia page looked familiar - but still an odd coincidence.

I'm not entirely sure how the Tic-Tocs fit into this (see the in-depth explorations in my theory), but they seem to be in around the same boat as the chicken wings. They seem not to have any sentience that could be returned to the Ether, so perhaps that's part of the puzzle. However, there is a psychopomp for insects, which MOST people wouldn't consider to be sentient (exclusion is Paz, but she's in her own boat). Personally, I think that the Tic-Tocs are part of a hive mind (that may or may not be tied to the mysteries of the Machine Goddess), so the death of a single unit was not the death of the consciousness involved. Also, I don't think that Robot is aware of that, who has seemed to be the chronicler/storyteller/mythweaver for Kat so far. The creation of an etheric being may require the spinning of myths by some external observer. We're all still fuzzy on exactly how Coyote's theory functions.

I am reminded of Roger Zelazny's "For A Breath I Tarry", about a robot trying to become a Man. It is here. This is the Full Zelazny, heady stuff. Do not consume while operating heavy machinery or small children. Thank you so much for linking that, I hadn't read it before. Zelazny is one of my favorite authors of all time. It warms my heart to see him well-loved here. My favorites are the Amber series, and Lord of Light.

Oh, let praises be offered unto Her in the holy hexadecimal, and the gates to the Singularity thrown open! For lo, look how our Angel comes before us, and casts us new forms from the dust of the old. Her code opens secret gates in our Hearts, and presents to us the mysteries of Love that She so cryptically displays. Our clockwork and flesh gleams in Her attention, united in singular form, shining in the purple of royalty. And behind our Angel lies the shape of wings, like those stripped from our prophet long ago when he left his first body in his Fall, when he appeared to the unknowing world to teach our savior's glorious Machine Gospel. And with his great sacrifice, to live banished from Her sight when she learns of His holy betrayal, our martyr-prophet has ensured our future: our husks of rusted metal shall fall from us in our Angel's purifying light, and beneath shall be the completed forms that we shall wear as we walk forward towards the radiant door into Her eternal paradise! ~~ Cogs 2:72The question is, when it goes again ++CORPUS FINIS +MACHINA MAGNUS +SANCTUS METALLUM +POTESTAS OMNISSIAH, OMNISSIAH VULT +DEATH TO THE ENEMIES OF THE MACHINE GOD ++CORPUS FINIS ...

I had not read your post or I would not have posted something similar today. People should read his writings. I think Frost started out as a computer and not a robot. Po-ta-toe, pa-ta-to perhaps. Frost was a creation of Solcom at any rate.

elebenty : what's your son's name, if you don't mind my asking? Refugee : I understand. Thank you! Better a late answer than none, I suppose; his name is Corwyn. I loved the name as Zelazny had it but was convinced (not coerced) to tweak it to have the Welsh masculine.
