They transfer Ys into a human body, but they turn him into a girl. Because that would be funny. If you think a woman can't be an even more effective wolf than a man, you must not have much experience with women, or for that matter know much about female wolves. Raksha, the mother wolf in Kipling's Jungle Books, is an excellent example from literature. But yeah, making Ysengrin the comic relief and even the object lesson of the story is kind of why he even exists.

When I read Friday's page about Annie's killing Loup meaning that she'd also be killing Coyote and Ysengrin, I thought it more likely that all three of them would be genuinely dead - as in, written out of the story (like Mort), rather than Coyote and Ysengrin staying in it in new bodies. The former path seems the better way to bring their deaths home, but we'll have to wait and see how Tom writes it.

I don't disagree with you, but then why would Coyote have taught Annie that when he kills a creature, he can stop the life from escaping? Perhaps she will let Coyote's and Loup's spirits back into the Ether, but keep Ysengrin around? I just think it's been so strongly established that Annie loves Ysengrin that I find it hard to believe she'd be okay with killing him. I feel like she'd do what she could to avoid that and let him learn from his god-worshipping mistakes. But who knows if that would be possible with the Court around.

I just want to add one other thought –– I know people are into the idea of Ysengrin becoming a human. But what if Kat can grow Ysengrin a cool robowolf body? We already enjoy Renard being himself, and we liked Ysengrin as he was, warts and all. No need for everyone to become human. Then Annie could have not one but TWO FAMILIARS ahahaha that would be pretty rad.
Then again, maybe the whole treewolf thing was already foreshadowing an eventual cyberperson body. I just can't help but feel that Ysengrin as a cyberperson would be a little more Terminator than cute himbo.

They transfer Ys into a human body, but they turn him into a girl. Because that would be funny. Why? Yeah, to be fair, he wouldn't even see being female as any sort of weakness. If he had had a pack, it wouldn't prevent him from leading it. Being a human is what he would see as weakness. Remember how "of the body" he is. Changing him into a human at all would be tragic.I think shaihulud is signalling here that they themselves see being female as some sort of lowered-status thing to be, which is in itself a bit tragic. Rest assured that this old badger hasn't found femininity or age to be anything but a source of strength, and even stronger as time goes by. Of course, to a medieval country bumpkin in his cups, telling a story about "the time Ysengrin was turned into a lady-in-waiting and had to learn to curtsy and do embroidery" would probably be hilarious in a coarse, "bearded guy in drag for comic effect" way. It puts me in mind of the myth of Thor having to impersonate Freya in order to retrieve his hammer Mjölnir, though that had (and has) layers of meaning and intent way beyond "ha, ha, tough guy in a dress being hit on by a giant".

(Following up from end of previous page because proboards is well-designed like that)
As far as the totem thing goes, we've been shown that the spirit within the totem is transferred to the body, by a ritual that evidently normal-ish people can do. As far as bodies go, the forest itself is Coyote's. What if the totem was buried?

Really? In Nordic culture saying that a man can give birth was considered an insult, so I wouldn't say it was "nuanced". I mean Loki gets trasformed into a horse, a female horse, and the gods find it amusing how he is humilating by giving birth to Sleepnir

Of course it requires some literacy and experience to see the underlying themes and correlations with other myths and stories.

I just had a terrible idea that the omega device is actually Boxbot. Which of course would mean Coyote, Loup and Ysengrin want to be reborn as Boxbots as well. All 4 boxbots will say "hello" to Annie and she won't be able to tell the difference, which one is original boxbot, which one is coyote, etc and she will say "This is terrible", and they will all say "Awwwww...." in unison.

So there's been word from Tom a pretty long time ago that mr Llanwellyn isn't the leader of Gunnerkrigg Court but just the leader of its school division. So why is he the one who leads all the meetings with Gillitie Forest? Then I realized that the Court's main interaction with the Forest is the yearly delivery of Foley students into the school. This is the only thing Gunnerkrigg uses the forest for, so it makes sense that the school would be the division that handles dealings with them.

I guess it should also be noted that most teachers we know have other jobs in the Court as well. Tony and Donald seem to be both involved in the Omega Device research, Dr. Disaster maintains and refines the crazy VR simulation engine, Eglamore is also Protector of the Court... It's thus reasonable that (for the reason you mentioned) the Court decided to give the jobs of school headmaster and person responsible for Court-Forest relations to the same person.

Anja is a teacher and a housewife. We've seen her doing domestic stuff a fair amount, and she may often be found at home. Yet, she created and still operates an ultra-advanced computer with teleportation abilities and some link to the ether. I wonder what her working role is in the non-school part of the court?
It would be a bummer if she turned out to be behind Omega. Or even to be the big bad.

My worst case scenario wild spec is that Donnie and Anja are the big bad, have long been working on the Omega device, and that Kat is a key part of/the omega device which was always known to them. Anja knowing about time travel didn't help put me at ease.

To clarify, the Court would think it was funny to turn him into a girl in order to try to humiliate him. Obviously Ys would ruin their attempts to make him feel humiliated, as he himself wouldn't dislike being a Magical Girl after having seen Annie using her fire powers.

I've just been rereading the comics from the past year, and others may have made this guess already, but what if the first Kat, the one who did lose Annie, was already the mecha-goddess by the time she met the Norns? It seems like the appointments need to be made by 'higher beings', and without Annie, Kat wouldn't have had Brinnie make the appointment, so she had to become a very special being on her own. In this theory, Kat is destined to become the mecha-goddess in all timelines, but the Norns don't want to tell her just yet, because it's not, well, time for that. They know she would worry about it and they want to spare her that worry. Not sure how this gels with my other theory about Muut showing up right after Annie surviving the fall just so that he can start the whole process of her becoming a psychopomp (he tells her about Jeanne and gives her the blinker stone) for mecha-Kat's beyond-robots, as it would mean that the original mecha-Kat and her beyond-robots wouldn't have a psychopomp, as their Annie never survived. Which sounds unstable, maybe that timeline collapses right after Kat initiates the first loop? [Edit: that would explain why she's also saving herself] [Edit2: in a way she never would have been able to do it on her own - just what dark road led her to the Norns the first time..?] So, wild guess with no basis: The Kat that took said Dark Road did what she had to do: become God. However, due to she fully understanding the Universe and Time's nature, she went a bit crazy, and a lot of mad, full circled back in time and.. became Coyote.

The entire story is a penalty from Coyote for Spankies, an Invader Zim "Who threw the muffin" style long con. As Annie walks Loup, Ysengrin and Coyete into a white mist ending this storyline, Coyete calmly turns and explains that this was all a lesson not to spank a God and we are back at that first meeting, the real world that hasn't advanced and Annies hand is inches away from Coyetes rump.

I choose to belive Shell is Loups primary target because she is the most magically talented person in the Court, not even secretly. It's just taboo to talk about that stuff and she is completely unwilling to use any of her power and risk her postion. Then he would start with probing attacks. She still may have something, of course, or be augmented in some way (with much hand-wringing, maybe). Not necessarily one relevant to the situation. Who knows. After all, Aata gave her an important role in a very important mission. Then: - Loup knows what Eggers and Parley can do. - doesn't know what Aata can do, but may be a serious opponent not to attack recklessly. - doesn't know what Aata's minion #1 can do, has no time to find out, but she clearly has something, is important and not demigod-level. So Loup hits her right away to eliminate one more possible trump in Aata's sleeve. Well reasoned. Or Loup knows she can blow things up with a thought and was hoping to eliminate her before she gave into temptation. Really this page is about the self control of Shell. I moved the reply here because I'm being fictitious in a really hopeful way.

"The program" is a list of Court operatives (and possibly students) selected to receive Coyote's powers once the Court obtains them. Essentially, pick and choose your own gods.
If they're trying to take the powers, they must want to do something with them. The Court is already known to copy and modify Anja's etheric powers/ programs, so they could do the same to Coyote's. You wouldn't give them to just anyone, hence why you can get kicked out for bad behavior.
Interestingly, in Annie's case, the decision seems to have been made for her/without her knowledge, unlike Aata. I think Shell is likely in the program too.

Aata is a "failure" because he is a divine being who has lost all of his worshippers, and the single one he subsequently attracted doesn't know precisely what he is. This may also explain Loup's attack on Shell; he may have been trying to take out Aata's sole link to existence as a divine being.
