Could it be the strange creatures laughing? Hm... maybe... But then he would have placed a matra to add the the vowel sound. Like this- हा . That would add the 'A' sound at the end. Otherwise it's just the 'H'. "Hhhhhhhhhh" ... Wheezing, maybe?

Lots of people are still pretty immature when they start families. When the baby actually arrives it's a wake-up call; sometimes the people rise to the challenge and grow up a bit more, but sometimes they hit the snooze button, pull the covers over their heads and get worse.

Otherwise it's just the 'H'. That's not quite how devanagari works. In "ideal" devanagari, say, when writing Sanskrit, each letter has an inherent vowel "a", so म alone does in fact represent "ma", whereas adding the matra turns into long "a", so मा represents "maa", and if you really want the consonant alone you need म् "m". The trick is that in Hindi orthography, due to the language having evolved from Sanskrit and so having orthographic oddities, म alone can represent either "ma" or "m", depending in which context it appears. So for instance the name रम is read "Rama" in Sanskrit but "Ram" in Hindi.

Imagine if Surma goes to speak to him and it's Zimmy's lines that come out. Starting from which moment? "Heh, you want this, yeah?" (after she gone "deeper") or all of it including mention of a green boyfriend and "Oh, she got a thing for Jonesy too?"Of course, this would be both amusing and not good for Tony's sanity (well, what little was left of it) in either case. Tony's just kind of slowly shifting to from insane glee to just the expression of what the Hell? While his wife is talking about "ring of teeth, no they's knives.....green boyfriend....thing for Jonesy" ...and then "Hey message message from your little girl mate." On both a comedic and serious note, its fun to reread old chapters with new perspective. It really shows how good Mr Sidell is at writing this.

Wait wait wait. They look like stylized TS's, as in "Tom Siddell". Are we sure it isn't just a signature?

Wait wait wait. They look like stylized TS's, as in "Tom Siddell". Are we sure it isn't just a signature? Are you saying that Tom is the jerk who took advantage of Anthony's desperation and ignorance for his own personal gain? That is SO meta! And it makes sense. Psychopomps and etheric beings really don't have anything to gain by being so cruel to Anthony. But Tom gets more page views and clicks, which generates more advertising revenue. For all we know, Tom created this entire situation and has been planning this for years. I know there is nothing in-comic to support this wild speculation, and Tom may bankrupt himself just to throw us off, but it seems to make perfect sense.

Hm... I dodged Sanskrit in school, so I didn't know that. Ooops. But I do remember in Hindi, the inherent vowel would be pronounced with an 'uh' sound, not exactly a long 'aah' sound. So if someone was going 'Ha ha ha' I think you would need the matra... Wouldn't you need the matra to spell Ram as well? Like so- राम Otherwise it reads 'Ruh'm'. I was actually going by Hindi, although admittedly it isn't my mother-tongue, Bengali is. Imo it is Surma. Annie is Surma - same soul. When Tony looks at it, he sees it how he remembers her, as Surma. It was the same deal with Rey and Coyote when they first saw Annie. Jeanne's blade cut Annie's soul, so Tony sees the scar on Surma's face here. On a wildly speculative note: I wonder whether Tony realizes that Surma's soul lives on in Annie's body, and if he does, how that might mess with him. Maybe he sees his beloved Surma even when he physically looks at Annie. Then again, she is also his daughter. Maybe he is so cold towards Annie because he's scared to death that he might develop inappropriate feelings towards her and as a last resort chooses to suppress all emotion whatsoever. Edit: the thread title "Divine" may have been a verb, not an adjective. I'm not too sure that Annie and Surma have the same soul. Perhaps they share a part of it? After all, something was left of Surma that Annie took into the ether. And we don't really see Surma deteriorating mentally, which she possibly would have if she had lost her soul. Come to think of it, has the 'fire' ever been referred to as the soul, anywhere in the comic? I always got the impression that the fire was the vitality, the life force. Or at least a substantial part of it. If I recall correctly, Japanese and Egyptian mythology both say that a soul is divided into different parts, one of which contains the life energy. Other parts contain the personality and so on. My guess is that Surma's vitality, and the aspects of her personality which were brought on as a result of being part fire elemental (hot temper) went to Annie. Since you can't stay alive without vitality, Surma died. Going on with my guess, psychopomps need vitality to communicate with the dead person. Since Annie has her mother's vitality, she was able to do what they couldn't- help Surma cross over. But the rest of Annie's 'soul' is hers and hers alone. So... to sum up (guessing again), Anthony didn't exactly get Surma. He's calling up her the life force in Annie, which puts the poor girl in a coma. And... maybe he DID somehow manage to get the rest of Surma from somewhere? Pulled her back from beyond the veil? Tony, oh Tony... I can understand why he wanted to do this. But has calling the dead back EVER ended well?

Could it be the strange creatures laughing? This is the creepiest explanation, so I'm pretty sure it's correct. I think we should name that Siddell's Razor: in eldritch fiction, the creepiest explanation is the most likely to be correct.

So, assuming that Tony really has reached Surma / "The Fire Inside", and possibly has between hours and days to chat with her, what might he have heard from her prior to receiving Dragon Punch?
1) Annie is cheating her way through most classes by copying Kat 2) Annie keeps the multiple murderer Reynard as a pet 3) Annie has been attacked by Ysengrin 4) Annie has been attacked by the guardian of the Annan Waters 5) Annie has received a Coyote Tooth 6) Annie has been threatened with hand loss by Coyote 7) Annie has had a crush on a Forest boy ... just like the guardian of the Annan Waters
Other intensely meaningful and disturbingly personal concerns that Surma would be in a position to relate?

I don't actually speak Sanskrit nor Hindi, I just have this theoretical knowledge about them, and of course you are right, "Rama" is spelt with a matra! Though it should also be noted that the inherent vowel of Hindi consonants, which matches English "uh", will most often match the "a" of other languages (in terms of sound).

Tony is acting out of desperation and ignorance and likely had no idea what he was doing. Which makes him a terrible human being.

Tony is acting out of desperation and ignorance and likely had no idea what he was doing. Which makes him a terrible human being. Actually this makes him normal. Acting "out of desperation and ignorance" and "having no idea what one is doing" is the essentials of the human condition for most people.

Being normal is perfectly compatible with being an incompetent idiot, but I wasn't calling him on his normalcy.

However I think intentions matter (they don't override actions or consequences but they matter) and don't think he is irredeemable.

Certain of what he believes. Fumbling to make sense of a world that has failed to behave in the way he expected. Dealing poorly with grief. His lack of self awareness and self criticism, however, make him dangerous to those around him, particularly to his daughter who must live with the uninformed, unilateral decisions he makes on her behalf as a result of his particular brand of personal flaws. Doesn't mean his malicious. Does mean he's a piss poor parent. Then again, being a piss poor parent is also very human.
