I'm just going to point out the Snake Tech's infographic shows the human body as having an empty, totem-sized spot in the midsection.
What if this ritual involves stuffing animal shaped soul blocks into the body? And what happens to the totem after that, if it remains a totem, then these kids will basically have their souls in a corporeal, and perhaps vulnerable form.
And maybe that's just how the court/forest want it.

For example, he could totally be pulling a Manchurian Candidate - making former animals controllable in the future, or somesuch. That would be contrary to everything we've learned about the Coyote so far. He isn't some evil overlord scheming to take over or destroy the Court, but a trickster who enjoys poking at people into unexpected directions and seeing how they react. He's never shown interest in controlling others, but sowing chaos and mischief. And he's never shown doing more than bare minimum to keep the whole business interesting for himself. The exact example is irrelevant. He could entirely have mucked with the process somehow, to create chaotic results. Creating the process without potential for chaos goes against His characterization. We know that nothing terribly chaotic has happened yet, because the Court still uses his process, but He could potentially have something planned for the future. I'm just going to point out the Snake Tech's infographic shows the human body as having an empty, totem-sized spot in the midsection. Where have we seen that before...(racks memory) We know that Red does not have one there (from this page) but it could be different for Fairies... EDIT: we've seen them here and here and probably other places too. I assumed it was just Tom's default metaphorical image of a human figure...until now...

Also in Treatise 5... in stylized depiction of Ysengrin, the representation of the memory Coyote removed from Ysengrin's mind looks a lot like a totem. Wooden, rectangular, and with some kind of stylized lines on it.

DaedalusI never realized that before. I wonder why Tom draws them that way? At least in Red's case, I was suggesting the Totems could be sewn up inside the body cavity somehow, and the Court's just good enough to not leave behind the scars.

So, her teacher got it from Coyote, but Who was her teacher, and When/Where was the learning and teaching done? Not necessarily recently, or inside the Court. I think she has to be a fairy herself, originally. Could she have even learned it before coming over? Wild speculation: Was her teacher somehow randomly connected to Brinnie's mysterious father? Whaddawhaddawhadda hey? Anyhoo! I'm also with the peoples who say he can't be "Jack," if for no other reason than she wasn't a jackalope (jack"rabbits" not existing in Europe, and her horns not being like those of a North American pronghorn "antelope"). Could be a wolpertinger? though at the risk of going on and on and on, I say the horns look like they're from a Saiga antelope, albeit of course shorter as befits their placement on a much smaller mammal - a European rabbit?:

Wait, if the fairies' spirits are floating just outside their bodies, does that mean another forest denizen could possess them with the proper ritual? It'd be the perfect way to smuggle someone into the court if one of the fairies is allowed to go to the forest. I know I'm grasping at straws here, but there has to be a reason that coyote would want fairies in the court.
Been over a year since I last read the archives so it's hard for me to make any connections.

Also, who in the court would have been given the opportunity to learn a ritual from Coyote in the first place? I had the impression that was the medium's sole province. Maybe Surma trained the new guy before going off to have a baby. It fits. Would be surprising for Annie.

Wait, are you suggesting Foley is not terribly chaotic? Retroactive edit! I think that simply introducing the Foley students into the Court causes all kinds of subtle and less than subtle complications that change the way the Court acts in unexpected ways. The best tricksters can make tricks so subtle that the mark'll never know they've been had. See Project Mindfuck from Illuminatus!-trilogy and (maybe?) real life for examples.
