I bought the book for my little sister as well, and was going to get myself a copy in the future. I hope things smooth out, but don't give up if it doesn't turn out this time around.

If the current publishing thing doesn't come through then I will most likely not print the comic at all. I already disappointed a lot of people who wanted the book, I don't want to waste people's time again. It's not your fault that the publishing date has been pushed back. Unfortunately, these things happen. It's nice that you care though. Not because you're not selling your books, but care because of how the publishing delay is effecting the fans of your work. Not all authors would care because of that. Most, if not all of the people posting in this thread seem to be disappointed the most in the fact that you may give up and not see your book published. The delay in the publishing date is a secondary concern for them. I feel the same way and think you should see through the publishing of your book for two reasons. First...I'm selfish. I've bought two. One for myself and one for a friend. Neither of us are expecting the book immediately, but I'm selfish and I want one eventually. If you give up, I won't get one. ;D Secondly, your work is so good it deserves to be turned into a book. It'd be a shame not to. If you're getting frustrated with the publishing process and just want to forget the whole idea because of the hassle, then I understand. I'd be disappointed, but I'd understand. However, if you're thinking of not publishing the book because your fans are being put out, I don't see many people here getting all worked up about the delay. That's one way of looking at it. The other way of looking at it is that a decent comic would not have trouble being printed. Your comic has been nominated for a Clickie, 12 WCCA's, and won three. It's been critically acclaimed in a number of online reviews, and has a devoted following. That sounds pretty decent to me. Some authors might have the benefit of agents and other industry muckity mucks to push their work through publication, but that doesn't mean it's any more worthy than another. ;D

This thread just got me to register with these forums. Of course, I could've mailed. Might still do that. Tom, if you don't publish GC, or part of, I'll be very angry with you indeed young man > Over the past years Gunnerkrigg Court has changed and developed a lot. While I wouldn't even have considered getting a book of the first few chapters (except the one with Basil, that's great) you have managed to get a very solid story and art quality over time. This current chapter is in both respects amazing, as I'm sure the comments have told you. There is quite some work that I wouldn't mind on my wall, honestly. I understand that you have had problems with your current/past publisher, though I haven't bothered to read all of it. That's one rotten apple, but I've seen plenty of webcomics (both US and UK) publish their work in print to great success, with no noticeable hassle from anyone. You deserve to have your comic printed and to perhaps turn your creation in a bit of money. Your comic deserves to be published in print and perhaps to be read by even more people. Now I have no clue of how big your audience actually is or of how many preorders you have received, but I have a feeling that it is definitely enough to get things rolling. We, your readers, would like to see this printed. We'd love to. I would love to, and hell - I wouldn't mind helping out to see it done if there was anything I *could* do. You know what my only problem is with getting Gunnerkrigg Court in dead-tree format? By the time I'd have the book there'd be a ton of episodes even better than the ones I'd have.

That's one way of looking at it. The other way of looking at it is that a decent comic would not have trouble being printed. If this were a movie, I'd slap you across the face and yell "NO! NEVER SAY THAT!"

Remember how much trouble Galileo had getting published? His stuff was pretty good.
Also, another round of delay-approval emails have gone forth from Amazon US. Some orders may be canceled by January 19th if not extended. Since that would be past ASP's range perhaps Titan could fulfill 'em.

Tom, you have spiders, we have money, and: We. Want. This. Book! And you know why? Because we love your adorable little comic, that's why. Imagine yourself, twenty years from now, thinking back to good old Gunnerkrigg Court. Would you say "Wow, thank God I didn't publish my comic. It would have been awful if it turned out to be a success!" ... I think not. And didn't you say yourself, it felt good to have a few thousand orders? Sure, that was quite some time ago, but the situation has not changed one bit! And you didn't even get refused. It has nothing to do with you that ASP went down so bad. To back off now would be like ... never again in your life ride a bicycle because your first one was pink and actually for girls. So what? Get a new one and everything's fine. ... OK, now I'm done being upset about you saying Gunnerkrigg is not worth it. Anyone got some good ASP <-> ASAP puns? etc.

I hope you never give up on getting published.
I've read a ton of webcomics over the years, Platinum Grit, Gunnerkrigg Court, and No Rest For The Wicked are the only comics I've ever longed to own.

Randy Pausch, author of the famous “The Last Lecture”, said the following about life' obstacles:
"The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something... the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough... they’re there to stop the ‘other’ people.”
You're not an 'other' person. You're going to make it.

I'm just a lurker here, but I really love your comic Tom and I'd be pretty disappointed if it didn't make into a printed book. Don't give up on this!

I am yet another lurker de-lurking to express a great love for this comic and a wish of having it in book form. Please don't give up on publishing this incredibly brilliant comic! I already disappointed a lot of people who wanted the book, I don't want to waste people's time again. I can't speak for everybody (although from previous posts it is apparent that I am not alone in thinking this), but I've only been disappointed by ASP and circumstance. The only way you, Mr. Siddell, could disappoint me concerning these publishing matters is by not printing the comic at all.

I'm going to join the other former lurkers who have come out of hiding to express their desire to see this comic published. No matter how long it takes, it's worth the wait to me and, I suspect, many other readers as well.
Tom, I hope you come to realize just how many people adore your comic. You are incredibly talented, and I sincerely hope that one day you will believe in your talent the way we readers do.

I just wanted to say that I waited 13 years for a reprint of "Sam & Max: Surfin' the Highway" after I stupidly loaded my original copy to a friend and never got it back. (For those wondering, it was finally reprinted this year in a fantastic hardcover edition signed by Steve Purcell!) On that note, I just want you to know that I'll wait just as long for a Gunnerkrigg book if I have to!
Seriously, this is a fantastic comic and it's the first that I read when I get up every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I've already got the LuLu paperback and still have an Amazon pre-order for this one, but I'd think nothing of re-buying it in hardcover, just to support your comic a bit more. I've spent far more money on things that haven't provided nearly as much enjoyment.
Okay, that's enough rambling, but keep on it, I'm sure it'll get printed eventually!

www.daradja.com/ <- The Archaia Studio website currently has GC listed for January 7th publication. Any more info about this?

The only other thing I've heard is that the estimated delivery date for Amazon US customers is now Feb 10-17. The ASP site lists Jan 7 as the street date and I've started to see echos of that elsewhere but no other info.

devilspanties.keenspot.com/ <- Jennie Breeden is having her book published through the same people. Apparently her book is slated to be in a comic shop by her on Wednesday. I imagine GC will share the same fate (or rather, I hope it will). My Amazon order lists February 4th as the estimated arrival date. (no range of dates listed)

I have a confession to make. I hadn't ordered yet. Cue GASP.
Now I wanted to finally get that done and I'm stuck because silly Amazon thinks everyone has a credit card >.> Guess I'll have to ask my dad nicely some time. Curse you, internet. This doesn't mean you shouldn't have the book printed if things don't work out, of course.
Which reminds me, IIRC the contract would've been nulled if the book hadn't been printed this month. How are things on that front?

My Amazon order lists February 4th as the estimated arrival date. (no range of dates listed) I've double-checked and my Amazon US delivery estimate of Feb 10-17 is still the same. Maybe shipping method and location play a role. However, I did notice that Amazon now lists January 30 of 2009 as the publication date for the "first edition" of GC. Maybe the ASP announcement should be interpreted to mean that of the three titles that are coming out one of them will be reaching stores on January 7th.

I saw pictures from some guy who got a copy that his local comic shop already recieved and "leaked" to him before the official street date, so the book is definitely being released and already out in the wild. I'll be ordering two copies at the end of this month! EDIT: Amazon is known for releasing things a week or two after other places get them, especially comic books.

Advance copies, maybe? If so Tom should be getting some in the mail around now. Either way it's great news.

I also recv'd an update from Amazon.com for my pre-order.
"We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed... Tom Siddell "Gunnerkrigg Court: Orientation" [Hardcover] Estimated arrival date: 02/02/2009"
That's less than a month away. Hopefully it is true!

To echo all the sentiments of those who posted before me... I just started reading this amazing webcomic YESTERDAY and I already know I want to buy this book (and I am a very picky buyer/reader... It takes me a while and much deliberating before I decide to spend any moola on comics, but this is a classic I know I would love to own and loan to friends). This is just an amazingly well-written, beautifully and originally depicted webcomic that more than deserves a spot on the bookshelf. Don't give up Tom!! I'll be bugging my local B&N all month for this.
