Off the topic: anyone remember what Eglamore's first name is?

I'm pretty sure his first name is Jim. I'm pretty sure "Ghosts" are visible to normal people because they are aware of what they are, and want people to see them. Spirit guides like Muut and the like are unlikely to be the same as ordinary ghosts. Otherwise, Kat wouldn't have needed Annie's help to see the Insect guide at the start of this chapter. Tom says that Guides can make themselves visible to Normals at any time, but they usually choose not to.

It's James. Mr. Donlan calls him Jim once, but that's obviously a diminutive.

So, wait, now we have:
* Ghost illusions: Mort. Ghost controls visibility for Normals (and maybe Mediums).
* Spirits: Muut, Ketrak, and the rest of the Guides. Spirits control their own visibility to Normals, but probably can't control their visibility to Mediums (Annie saw the spirits before she met them).
* Hallucinations: Zimmy. Not controlled by her, not visible to anyone but her (but Gamma can 'hear' the static and 'read' her thoughts... Telepathy?), unless left unchecked for too long.
* Subconscious projections: the little boy. Apparently subconsciously controlled by him, visible to Mediums, visibility to Normals unknown.
The little boy's projection is closer to ghost-projections. Is Mort a little boy who refused to go on, in fear, and is now condemned to scare other people?

... Is Mort that little boy? (Probably not, but...) It'd be neat if he was, but that would leave the question as to why he's haunting Gunnerkrigg and not Good Hope.

That arm is freaky. If that's his charred arm, he must have died in a fire, which burned his house down when he was sleeping. That would explain why it is his bed specifically that he is projecting. Definitely not the best way to go. "Disfortunate accident" indeed.

Except he would have remembered her if that was the case. Maybe he blocked her out of his memory after she rotted his arm.

I don't think that's a burnt/rotted arm, it looks almost identical to the "tree arm" that Robot had.
Not that that makes any sense at all. Unless, I suppose, the forest was involved with his death somehow.

I think it looks the most like it's mummified.
- but that doesn't make much sense either, if the boy has died recently.

It might have been a self gratifying thing, where he made it happen without conciously meaning.
Or maybe its not a good idea for the living ot touch the dead, at least those who dont know they are. Might break down the illusion that their still alive.
and remember, its not his body, its his spirit.
