I am sad. Goodbye Mort, maybe see ya... Edit : Since there is no end-of-the-chapter sign, I expect something else, though.

I'm expecting a brief fade to white, or maybe see Mort dissassemble and merge with the ether or something as Annie and Mort wave to each other. Sad chapter, we better get a Red and Blue happy fun time bonus page!

I wish I lived in a world where seeing a friend off to death was a happy occasion.

Aww. I got some strong Casper vibes when Annie twirled Mort around on page 1344 and here are those vibes again. Tom must be one of those people who watched Casper over and over and bawled their eyes out every time. Like me.

Since I don't know Casper, I got a danse macabre vibe from the first row of panels today.

Brave Kat.
She's going to need a hug later, though.
(While I've no doubt Annie will provide one if necessary, I wonder if she's going to need one too.)

He's going quietly. One day I'll get it right, I swear I will.

I bet there's going to be some last-minute curveball Tom throws at us. Just like in the Coyote/Ysengrin chapter, there will be some revelation that completely upends what we previously believed about this universe and it's characters.
Or it could just be a sad goodbye. I'm betting on the former though.

Ah, weekend! Vexing tick of days. How you tantalize and annoy. I'm wondering how Mort's memories will be affected. Will he begin to see Annie as someone else, say the girl at the beginning of the chapter? Will he start to think, that he's going to go see his parents in the country? In a manner, he is. Tick-tock...

It's a white light. Why did I know it would be a white light? I bet there's going to be some last-minute curveball Tom throws at us. Just like in the Coyote/Ysengrin chapter, there will be some revelation that completely upends what we previously believed about this universe and it's characters. Or it could just be a sad goodbye. I'm betting on the former though. Now that you mention it, I'm 50% sure there's going to be a curveball, and 75% sure that that curveball (given that it exists) will postpone Mort's departure.

Annie is quite stoic and beautiful in that last panel, exactly what I would want in my guide when the time comes. Mort's child like wonder will be met with his old childhood friends if my guess is correct.

Mort's child like wonder will be met with his old childhood friends if my guess is correct. Alas, when people go to Ether they become a part of it, losing their individual self and eventually forming new souls for people being born. So no conventional afterlife in this story beyond the RotD. I love the facial expressions, not sure what else to say at the moment...

And c'm'on, if the ether can from the memories of the dead retroactively create beings like Coyote and Jones, and can turn smoke and mirrors into real vampires, but cannot summon and make real his old childhood friends, it is a poor show. Having said that, I don't expect we'll be privy to that show, poor or not. Unshown, it's more powerful by far.

We do? From where? Or am I just having new baby with a side of three year old potty training amnesia? If its a "Curveball" I call it something like a energy boost for Annie. And that is why grim reapers always want there dead That would be quite the addiction...Makes you wonder how they get their assignments (besides Kerchak, that is. And speaking of, he would probably be mighty powerful under this plan).

]New souls? Got a reference for that? Well, it's known that souls of the dead merge with the Ether, while souls of those being born come from the same source. It would seem logical that the material gets recycled, so to speak.

Mort. Going in that door will DESTROY you. Were you even listening when that was said? And Annie, why didn't say that BEFORE the recording?

What if the dead lose there individuality, but all their dreams and memories are stored in the ether. I like that. Like the real world, build from bits and pieces of what came before us. I expect Mort to change back to his old self and meet his childhood friends; I think Tom introduced us to them to that end. He even went so far as telling us Betty is already dead. And maybe a cameo by Surma. Mort. Going in that door will DESTROY you. In a way yes. But thats the point isn't it? There can only be new life if there is an end to life. You don't have to like it though.

And if the system works like that, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the positive feelings from guiding a soul is proportional to the size of the soul which is proportional to the intelligence of the being that held the soul. Also, two other thoughts: if Annie experienced a 'rush' from releasing her mother into the ether, then that may have been very traumatic - she wanted to be grieving her mother, but felt really good about getting rid of her for some reason. Also, if it is endorphin-based, similar to a drug, then it would be too easy for soul-eating monsters to be created, unless the ROTD or psychopomp high command controls the endorphin rush. Personally, I believe that it's not endorphin-based. I don't see how Annie could have gotten an addiction or craving to any agree from releasing one soul as a very young child. Instead, if the system does rely on irrational (possibly external) impulses, then I'm guessing that it's a compulsion to perform the action without expectation of a reward.

Except there was nothing left of Surma for the guides to take: gunnerkrigg.com/?p=804

My regrettable job here is to add to the record that our second protagonist too has started to grow a pair of bosoms, first time verifiable without doubt in panel 5.
What comes to Tom's comment, it could signify that Kat will not be seen in some time, meaning the next chapter will be about Annie, but could also be mostly about Zimmy and Gamma. It has also been many chapters since we last have heard of the fairies.

Monday's comic will be one or two panels. Annie walking back, alone, maybe closing the door behind her.
And chapter end.
(Odds that I'm right are, based on past experience, somewhere between 0% and 1%.)

(Odds that I'm right are, based on past experience, somewhere between 0% and 1%.) Well, knowing Tom, he might just pull something like that, robbing us of the experience of what it means to bring the dead into the aether! DX But, also knowing Tom, you may also be wrong. Let's just see what happens.

My guess: from the lighting, they are walking back to the moment of Mort's death. Annie meeting early Jones could be interesting.

My guess: Annie escorts him to the ether, consoling herself that she's at least done a good job this time. Mort is destroyed and absorbed into the ether, leaving no trace of his individuality. Someone from the RotD reviews Mort's final records; they find that he violated protocol by showing Annie and Kat in the video. They throw the video away, making some comment about the bloody newbies not knowing how things are done. And everyone spontaneously loses all memory of everything Mort did posthumously.
And Betty is deeeeeead.

My guess? Whatever happens will be brilliant and/or heartwarming and/or gutwrenching and/or surprising and/or pretty much what you expect. I trust Tom to tell a good yarn though.

We do? From where? Or am I just having new baby with a side of three year old potty training amnesia? Sorry if I implied it was a callback; It's just the same door (at least visually from the exterior) that her and Ankou went through. Some had wondered if they were just going to walk off and melt away slowly (because the ether is everywhere).
