Thank you Mort. For clarification. Ahh, the English and their need to give everything a department or bureau. To keep with this theme-of-the-day - "From the moment the invaders arrived, seen rice paper, gemstone stamps and heard prayers to Celestial Bureaucracy, they were doomed. They were undone, destroyed, after all Chinese weapons and devices had failed..." Decontamination is everyone's responsibility!

I think that Annie is laughing and giving a 'you're kidding me, right?" stare. To me, it doesn't look weird at all.

I think it was said that Moort was quite young. What "young" means in ghost terms is anyone's guess. Still, the thought alone... daaamn. Wild wild speculation here, but... Green guy = forest spirit, right ? The life expectancy for a tree comes from a hundred year to millenaries for some species, so... Young, hey... Could be 100 years old and looking 20, and a "recent" death some 80~100 years ago... *excited* While anything's possible........the fact that Tom brought Mort in so suddenly after images of the arrow and discussion of the whole situation smacks to me of crimson kipper. I doubt Mort's origins will be given away quite so easily. Now it may be that he was a contemporary of Jeanne's; perhaps it took Diego more than one revision to refine the etheric technology in the arrow, and Mort was one of the test subjects? That would make this page even darker than it already is, and explain why Mort is bound to that general location rather than the ravine. For that matter, it would explain a bit more the whole Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori engraving.

I feel like Mort just happened to die in an accident rather than being a sacrificial lamb toward the Court's plans.
Of course, I feel like this will be turned upside down and I'll feel silly later for thinking such mundane thoughts.
Also, one thing I find interesting is that Mort isn't really sure if the ROTD really gave him his job or not. Perhaps it is the court who's forcing him to stay there against his knowledge, or if there's some higher power working it so Mort is stuck there as a "job".
If it was a true job, I wonder what Mort would be paid with?

I wonder if they pronounce ROTD as "Arr Oh Tee Dee" or as "rotted". Well, for a couple years in my younger days I was involved with an organization known as "afrot-see". Is it just me or does Annie have a disturbing tendency to this unexplainable excitement only in situations related to death, blood, fight and killing? It's as if, from the moment she here's the "Realm of the Dead" she was extremely excited to go and put some people there. I don't know about "go and put some people there" but really, since she was about four years old, when someone was dying she got to meet really interesting-looking people who would take time to talk to her and teach her things. She got to walk with them and occasionally do things with or for them. Naturally she's excited. Also, she may not be aware of tropes per se, but she knows her place in them.

While the idea of Mort being green dude is intriguing his personality seems a bit juvenile to have attracted and held the interest of Jeanne. Also, cannon references describe the pair as deeply, deeply in love and nothing in the text indicates Mort has loved and lost.
I find the idea that Mort might have been an early test-subject of Diego's more plausible. Most plausible, I think, is that something unexpected and interesting will happen.

I am somewhat disappointed.

If this page was ever translated to swedish: From panel 3 Annie: "Vem gav dig ditt jobb?" Mort: "Killarna på DR, antar jag..." Annie: "DR?" Mort: "Det står för... De Dödas Rike!" Kat: "Borde det inte vara 'DDR' i så fall?" Mort: "De föredrar 'DR'"

Mort: Killing my pa's doctor, another jerk. Annie: Doctor? Mort: Death starts for... the father of Riker! Annie: Bored! That isn't very DDR {Dance Dance Revolution}. Is that all? Mort: Die, forehead doctor!

also Morts job seems pretty straight forward: step1: scare people bad enough so that they remember him
2: scared people tell stories about him (multipule times in Paz's case)
3: stories told about mort ensure the continuation of the ether

The poem on the wall by his little hangout area is from World War One. ( dulce et decorum est pro patria mori and etcetera) Actually that line is from a Roman poem written about 13 BC, but you are correct it was made most famous to the modern world by a poem about World War One, where it was used ironically after the rest of the poem described a horrific gas attack. The line was in use before that as a completely serious quote used to describe fighting for one's homeland.
