I really suck at digital painting, but there was a need for some fan art of this particular character. [ #]

Being a person who regularly falls prey to electronic distractions, I made an important tally keeper for my place of residence. Cant figure out how to attach photos on mobile, but the link is here: m.imgur.com/QD1SPvZ. I hope to add the photo proper shortly.

Finally, a chance to express my absolute love for this comic, without a bible of text to describe it's beauty! I drew these on paper, scanned them and used a program to darken up the lines. Sorry if the backgrounds aren't very detailed. Usually I have the most fun drawling the characters.

I wouldn't expect Jones to have that much emotion showing, but the work is pretty cool anyway.

I wouldn't expect Jones to have that much emotion showing, but the work is pretty cool anyway. I think she looks pretty neutral, and that the mild severity in her face is just due to the angle. But then, I have a famously grim resting face, so I may not be the best judge of neutrality in body language. In any event, it would take me a very long time to make a picture like either of the ones Cloud (waitingforthenextpage) has shared.

Sorry, but I'm not really sure what you mean. I mean, I guess I might had intentionally made her emote more then intended. But I definitely was trying to go for a plain expression completely devoid of human personality. I'm not sure I'm seeing the emotion in her that you are though. I dunno, maybe it's just like what freeformline said, just the angle. Here's the picture I used as reference while drawling her. Looking at them both now, I think a lot of it might have to do with the eyebrows. Well the picture with all the characters, I drew first. It took me about a total of 4 days. However, it should be mentioned that a lot of my time spent on it was after classes, during school. I'd pick it up every now and then and add a little more to it. As for the picture with Annie, Kat and Renardine, I started on it yesterday morning and finished just before posting both of them. I really just wanted to draw little Annie from the early chapters, try to capture all of her adorable awesomeness. :3 It wasn't until later I decided to add Kat and the background. But really my stuff is nothing compared to a lot of the other fanart I've seen on here. I mean christ, with guys like Quote Pilgrim and stealthygc, we're talking full paintings here, which I believe require far more considerable amounts of skill, then simple drawings. I have to say, it feels good to get out some of my love for this comic though. I almost feel as though I've appeased some of my undying obsession with it. EDIT: Is there a way to change your user name on here? For as much as I enjoy waitinforthenextpage, I think this profile has become pretty well known as Cloud. XD Plus it's inaccurate, as I try not to read a lot of the newer pages for GC. I'm trying save them all until he finishes a chapter, so I can have a satisfying amount to read. :l

Your Jones clearly looks a bit angry to me. You can fix that both by changing her eybrows and making the mouth, hmm… straighter. Anyways, in order to change your display name, click “profile” on the top of the page, then “edit profile” to the right of the box with your avatar, and then go to the “personal” tab, where you can edit the “display name” field. P.S: That image in your post reminds me of this: the Pilgrim in my display name actually comes from Scott Pilgrim. It’s the best manga (yes it is a manga and i don't care if anyone disagrees) I've ever read. EDIT: Oh, thank you for your appreciation of my work (how could I forget this?), but really, it does not take as much work as it looks like. I mean, the pencil drawing of Kat I posted earlier took me a lot more time than Mort. To be honest, digital work is generally easier than non-digital work, for a number of reasons.

I had a feeling that was where it came from in your name. Scott Pilgrim is amazing, I have a difficult time deciding whether I enjoyed having a better time going through all those books, or all of GC. (Plus I never get tired of using Scott's amazing expressions in these forums). I'm not sure I can personally agree with your statement over digital and non-digital work. Of course, I don't really own a tablet of any sort, so drawing with a mouse for me has always been a serious challenge. Thanks for filling me in on name changing. I'll mess around with that a bit, and see what name I like. Anyway I don't mind messing around a bit with Jones's face. I'll post up an edited version soon.

Well, it is considerably harder to draw without a pen tablet. But I can assure you that nothing is easier than drawing and painting with it, provided you learn how to use some painting/photo-editing software (I highly recommend MyPaint). I am totally unable to paint in any traditional medium.

I think every art medium is ridiculously hard, but that's just me. Some people take to a tablet quickly and others find it clumsy and frustrating for a lot longer time, but like anything it's doable with practice. Definitely a more intuitive experience than drawing with a mouse. I find it really hard to compare digital and traditional painting... acrylics, oils, pastels etc. are very much about pushing around the material. I would say digital art is most similar to drawing, not painting. To anyone that doesn't have a tablet but wants to get into digital stuff I'd recomment scanning or photographing pencil drawings and coloring with a mouse. It's tedious, but you do get a cool organic quality that tons of artists never quite achieve with digital effects.

I was tempted to try coloring those two on here, but the effort required bypasses my commitment by far. I don't know, maybe I'll give it a try sometime later. I owe it to this great comic, to at least try.

Okay, did some tweaking on Jones. How's she looking now? Besides that, I had an idea in my head and felt an irresistible need to draw it. I'm sorry guys, but I really couldn't help myself here.

It's tedious, but you do get a cool organic quality that tons of artists never quite achieve with digital effects. I would argue that they aren’t actually trying to achieve any sort of organic look. I might be wrong, but I believe most people who make digital art do want it to look digital. Just to illustrate my point: this is some quick sketch I've made a couple months ago. If I told you it was done in pencil, I'm sure you would believe. But it was not. It was done in MyPaint. (And little to no training is required to get similar results – just pick the right brush.) Oh, and just to keep things on-topic:

Annie in her new outfit on a roof! I think it's decent considering the amount of time I put into it, but I'm not really happy with her face. Edit: her nose seems to have disappeared... :/

And you can indeed change your username (or at least your displayed one; you would still log in as cloudedatthemoment): go into the profile section and hit edit. I had a single piece of fanart I'd done of Coyote, but I lost it! (Tears)

I know Tom is against selling art of gunnerkrigg but would commissions be okay? Anyone know this? Define "commissions". The fanart that is on display here is work done by individuals out of their interest in and inspiration from GKC. It isn't for sale, obviously, and Tom at least puts up with it. (Might even like it, in fact...) Producing such art for commercial purposes would be a violation of his copyright on his work, both the letter and the spirit of it. He isn't the only person who would take a dim view of the activity.

Commissions don't have to be for money. The "Could you please draw XY in the following scene:"-kind is just fanart. I'd go so far to say that an art trade (I draw something for you, you draw something for me) is okay too. If we have a Word of Tom that overrides my opinion, let me know.

From what I understand, Tom is perfectly happy with you making whatever you want so long as you aren't making money on his characters and other things. I don't know what he would think about paid commissions, but I would rather be safe than sorry. You can always contact him if you want confirmation and can't find the old thread where he talked about it.
