I'm sure that from Annie's dialogue "No. Not over something like this." and "I... don't know what to say, Kat." as well as Reynard's earlier thoughts that Annie is feeling uncomfortable or disconcerted with PatKaz, but she isn't angry and wants to remain main babes with Kat.

Can I just say Kat's approach here is very mature. Rather than jumping to conclusions and/or getting defensive she is asking Annie to open up and tell her what she's thinking and offering reassurance "we can work this out." Kat gets a gold star for appropriate conflict resolution tactics when dealing with an emotionally triggered person!

Possibilities: - Annie feels rejected by kat (as a friend) - Annie feels rejected by kat (as more than a friend) - Annie is homophobic and creeped out (ANNIE!! D:) and is rethinking all the times they hugged - Annie actually has no idea how she feel and it's a combination of more than one of the above I don't think It's either of these, I am getting a feeling that the room is used only for emergencies, and this is not one of them. I think Annie might just be a bit shocked, but that would mean that she couldn't see the romantic relationship forming even after this. I don't know what to think any more, well done Tom. also... what's that symbol on the door about, it's placed so prominently, in the centre of the last panel, right between them. |

My guess (fully acknowledging that it is a guess) is that Annie recognizes that her reaction is pretty much all about Annie.
She has only ever, in her life, had one long-standing close friend her own age. She was probably intellectually aware that this friend would have relationships, most specifically including intense romantic relationships, with other people, but emotionally she wasn't really ready for it plus it came in an unexpected form.
So she's thinking she ought to be happy for Kat, but she's actually feeling quite insecure.

The tree room nostalgia suggests a longing for more innocent times. Annie's friend is growing up *sniffle*
Soon, Kat will be moving away to college and then who knows where, leaving Annie behind with Rey and the kids. And will Annie get grandchildren? Probably not! Annie expects grandchildren, Kat! You know artificial insemination has become much more reasonably priced these days, I'm just saying. I'M JUST SAYING, KAT, GOD. WHY DON'T YOU VISIT MORE, ANYWAY?! WOULD IT KILL YOU TO AT LEAST CALL ONCE IN A WHILE?!?
