ITS ABOUT DAMN TIME also LOL @ "support your tank" How does Tom have time for WOW and a work-at-home job? The two are usually not compatible. It's a common term in mmos, so he doesn't necessarily have to have played one to hear of the term. As rama noted, the term existed well before MMOs.

Also: did anyone else notice the resemblance between the depiction of Annie in the last panel and her ancestor? Especially their eyes. I did, and it helps bring into, er, focus something that has been bothering me for a while. When Annie accepts the position of Forest Medium, she does so with a flambe flourish. The trouble is the image, while spectacular, just doesn't look like Annie to me. I had put it down to Tom experimenting with manga styling, but now I'm not so sure. I don't think there is anything meaningful in the style of drawing in this particular instance. Fire brings with it enhanced shadows. Looks awesome though.

I noticed this too, both showing characters taking a level in badass. I wonder if its webcomic sweeps week?

(There is considerable overlap among the three groups.) I really like the "WTF" in panel 3. (And then the "Oh." "YEAH!")

I read the expression on Old 'Grin in the last panel as: "It's about time you stopped muckin' around and started really having fun!". How does Tom have time for WOW and a work-at-home job? The two are usually not compatible. It's not like one really has to play WOW to pick up on its memes. I don't play it but I still got the reference. It's due to the outstanding originality thereof, you see. Shouldn't someone who is wearing a wooden exoskeleton be a little more freaked out about being on fire? He was puzzled through the whole 3rd panel.

Um, something I just remembered...
That grin might not mean what we think it means. For predators, bearing one's teeth is a sign of aggression.
I didn't think of it at first either, but then for one reason or another the Kzinti from Larry Niven's Known Space series popped into my head... (Their body language works like this, which is why one always keeps their smiles tight-lipped in the presence of a Kzin.)

AWWW YEAH! Also, I love Y's look in panel three; he's like "WUT." Trying to figure out what's going on...then "AWW YEAH!" Yeah, he's confused and misses a beat and then... "Oh that's right, I brought Fire-Head Girl with me this time."

Ysengrin was so losing on purpose. After the kind of power we saw him display when chasing Anny, there's no way he could be overwhelmed like that. I would say that look was more, "What kept her so long?"

Shouldn't someone who is wearing a wooden exoskeleton be a little more freaked out about being on fire? He was puzzled through the whole 3rd panel. He doesn't have time for more than that, his schedule is filled with important stuff, like "Eat fish", "Pummel monsters" and "Don't remember Tuesday". He can't be expected to put much time into trivial things like being on fire, the guy is busy. Ysengrin was so losing on purpose. After the kind of power we saw him display when chasing Anny, there's no way he could be overwhelmed like that. I would say that look was more, "What kept her so long?" I don't know, he was pretty exhausted after the chase. It seemed like he could barely move at all. Remember that Ysengrin's actual body is very frail, and his powers over the trees is not as complete as one could first imagine by looking at him. On top of that it is possible to tire after a while when before you could kick all kinds of ass. Like Coyote said, Y is not as spry as he used to be. The real question is if he would have had a problem beating those monsters before he got the "gift"? When Antimony sees him through the ether he seems rather impressive, so maybe the new body was not an upgrade at all. One could analyze Coyotes comment as a "yes" to that question, but perhaps Y is just becoming more and more affected by the unstable nature of his second body, the stress of amnesia that he himself can notice spreading, and his old body wilting more and more as time goes on. That could probably take the spring out of anyones step. Also, ganging up on one target is a favorite tactic of pretty much every predatory pack animal in reality, and it's a pretty good plan. It's about the death of a thousand cuts, not about besting the big guy one on one. Any wolf or lion would be completely stomped into paste by most of their prey in a one on one confrontation, but tip the odds about 15 to 1 and you have yourself a game, and even in those cases it doesn't always succeed. Even when it does, sometimes one unlucky individual is caught out and promptly killed off in no short order. It's more complex than just "person A is stronger, therefore person A can go on and win forever". Sadly media that portray fighting never really goes into any depth on how fatigue changes the playing field, even though it's a major part of all fighting in actual conflict. Ysengrin has grown into one of my favorite characters, if not my favorite character period in GC. It's very cool to see what first appeared to be a xenophobic maniac revealed as an actual person with, if not ordinary then at least understandable issues. It is also nice to see where he came from and why he is as he is. Anyone witnessing the fight can have no doubt where the posturing culture and Ysengrins fixation with not appearing weak comes from. He's probably had to beat guys like these up in the past to keep them in line. It also explains why he thinks Antimony needs to start showing some spirit, or else she'll be trampled.

I don't know, a common motif in the fire elemental pic, and both these pictures of Annie is the vertical line dividing the face. Also, in the "I'll do it" pic, her mouth is de-emphasized...

In other words, "hard" shadows. Also, we can see than Annie indeed speaks their language. I mean, there's not only "gunship diplomaty", but also some cool posturing.

I don't think there's any conflict between his "aggressive" grin and his appreciation for Antimony's involvement in the fight. He's just making a fierce expression under appropriate circumstances for it. "What the... oh... hell yess! Grrr!!"

Thank you. Good to know I'm not going insane.
And I just realized now that in the original version, that arc is supposed to be the outline of his snout not a gigantic happy face.

The panel 4 "smiley-face" was commented on in Twitter. Tom probably changed it after feedback like that; clarity is good.

Blast, that not grin kinda changes the whole page for me. I thought about the smiley snout when I first saw it and (wrongly) decided it was meant to be a smile. Ys looked much more friendly.
I was thinking that he was happy about the fire and than the real grin is animal ferocity. Now it is left for the grin to do the job of happy/ferocious.

It took me nearly 4 hours to realize that. I was very confused: Ysengrin seems more of the 'slasher smile' type rather than 'cartoon smiley'. Glad that was cleared up.
