Does.. does this count as a throwdown? It was brief, but she blasted the crap out of the wasp. Was I right..? OH god I can't handle this. Someone spew some bullshit semantics about how I was technically wrong to get me back in to my comfort zone. AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

Umm.. [semantics]You're technically wrong[/semantics]? *badpokerface* All she did was used Fire Spike on its buzzy little creepface to its death. It was super effective, apparently. In any case, it's a normal self-preservation reflex.

In the final panel, it looks like the insect's legs have merged with Coyote's outline.

It's rare to see Annie actually use her fire powers. I didn't even make the connection at first. I thought it was Coyote doing something in panel two.
Remind me please, have we seen her using her powers anywhere except in chapter 31? I sort of figured she couldn't just use them at will...

Yeah I'm doubting that Coyote is 'watching over' annie as some people have said, much more likely he was letting this happen until it went too far, or until the wasp thing was about to reveal too much. It has already shown that Coyote's Annan waters separated the two sides before they started fighting, not after. No, look at 1249 again, it says he divided them after the fighting began.

Whatever coyotes motivation, seems like a thanks in response should be in order.

I think the friendly spider-eating wasp would have been a plot seed for counteracting a Court infestation of whitelegs further on, but Coyote decided that wasn't funny.

I didn't even notice the little crown in the burst the first time.

Since Coyote is a god and he comes from the forest, was this a deus ex arboreum? ;-)
I'm guessing that Coyote arranged this whole thing, not really as a test of Annie's loyalty, but more to show her that she's trusted in her role as Forest Medium.

Let's hope this leads to some exposition. "So... that wasp said it was the Seed Bismuth?..." It would be nice, to hear something straight from the canid's mouth.

I would have acted to defend her earlier, but I wanted my wasp to be be barbecued first. They're much crunchier that way.

Taking a step back, the purpose of this outing is not to show the ruins, or necessarily to explain the seed bismuth (for nothing's important pre-coyote!!) - but to teach Annie to be able to defend herself. Which she did (but may need more practice, hence Coyote stepping in).
It started out with Ysengrin doing his style of defense, and moving onto Annie doing hers.

Since Coyote is a god and he comes from the forest, was this a deus ex arboreum? ;-) Pick one: ex arboribus (from the trees), ex arboreto (from the tree-place) or e(x) silva (from the forest). Then write the following sentence on the blackboard a hundred times, while I flaunt my graduate cap and Langenscheidt's Latin Dictionary: COIOTVS EVNT DOMVS

Just thinking: that's Renard and Coyote fixed up for etheric arthropod supplements. What does Ysengrin get for treats? Bovver-bites? Well if you ask Red, she'll tell you all about it!

At first I thought that the wasp was drawing out Annie's fire elemental soul/power. Since the wasp seems surprised in the third panel it is more likely that Annie had fired some shield. Coyote probably set this up, either way as least Annie is in for some real training.

Well I guess the mystery of why that thing wanted to leave the forest is solved. Not wanting to be eaten is a big motivator.

Fair enough, I misremembered. I called that it wasn't the real Seed Bismuth, and I'm still not believing now that Coyote ate it just to save Annie. It was revealing secrets, and Im sure Coyote would prefer any secrets to come from his own mouth, with his own twisted way of telling them...

Verus. But there's also a very silly pun hidden in that post. Dog Latin. Edit: Just now, ProBoards encourages me to read a »related story from around the web« called »The Pizza Bubbles of North America«, demonstrating that beauty comes from the strangest places.

Do you notice what we DON'T see anywhere?
I don't see a blinker stone.
Like, anywhere. True, she could be wearing it on her leather cord, but still, no visible blinker. I think that's a milestone there.

How did the wasp not sting Coyote? I'm sure it could have, easily.

How did the wasp not sting Coyote? I'm sure it could have, easily. Well he's a god, he can choose whether or not to feel pain (or unless the story has him feel pain), plus it probably died too fast to get in a sting.

Every time I see the title of this thread, I hear "I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind I put down in woooooords . . . how wonderful life is . . . while you're in the woooooooorld . . . "

She created a bit of a show in Chapter 41, when she accepted Coyote's offer to be the Forest Medium. A sort of finger to the Headmaster (although Annie's too ladylike to indulge in those sorts of gestures: leaves then to Renardine)

Something just occurred to me:
Jones said that "Coyote is no liar". She didn't say that he doesn't lie.
We sometimes use an expression of the form "so-and-so is no X" when that person perhaps occasionally tries to be an X, but is really really bad at it.
In the current comic, Coyote makes a statement that I don't think anyone believes - not even him. Has he ever made a *credible* statement (and that would include the manner of him making it) that it later turned out he knew was false?

I think that's a milestone there. Yes! You're right. Probably because she had no time to grab it and needed her fire to defend herself. Page 1159 She palms it when untying her hair, but here there is no "blink". I thought it was the first time but looked back at Firespike, no sign of the blinker there too. So when in anger she doesn't need the blinker.
