I'm a bit surprised that we got all three of the guest comics in the first week and none in the second.
This one is scary enough that it's a good thing that guest comics (usually) aren't canon. Zimmy's powers may be even more dangerous than I'd hitherto thought.
(Side-note: somebody on the comments page noticed that one of the eyes on the chart was the Eye of Sauron from "The Lord of the Rings", a touch that delighted me.)

I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but Zimmy could give Mort lessons in being scary.

From those last two panels, I gather that Zimmy is both a Lovecraftian horror and related to 2D of Gorillaz.

Glad you guys enjoyed it. For the record, the full text on the eye chart says (all run together), "E HELP ME STUCK IN EYE CHART FACTORY WE ARE DYING SO COLD SO COLD I MISS THE SUN MOM IS THAT YOU I SMELL A PIE BAKING SO DARK"
You can't read it on the reduced web version, but it's there. Personally, my favorite eye disease is "Lemon."
And there's a bit of extra Gunnerkrigg-related booty on my site now for anyone who cares to check.

I also posted the key to the Diseases of da Eye chart in the comments, but it hasn't been approved yet. Here it is, from left to right and top to bottom: Morpheus, Sauron, Apple of the Eye, Triple Iris, Zombie Eye with Nail in It, and Lemon. "Don't Put Salt in Your Eyes" is just a Kids in the Hall reference, and a fairly well-known one, too. Unless you're too young to know what Kids in the Hall is, which would make you a whipper-snapper who needs to watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRbx6Zr5gDoI also like the poster of the giant eyeball that you can't see so well in the next-to-last panel. I kind of like the idea of an optometrist's office just having a bunch of huge creepy posters of eyes staring at you. Dr. Goldberg isn't a whiz at interior decorating, but he sure loves eyes.

I find it all the more pleasantly surprising that a guest-comic so creepy could also be so funny. The highlights for me were:
1. As the eye doctor succumbs to an attack of Lovecraftian madness, Zimmy simply says, "Oi! Watch it!"
2. In the last panel, she's clearly helped herself to the poor man's entire supply of lollipops (though I doubt that he's in any condition to hand them out after this).

Hahahahahha. I was wondering what the eye chart read. Awe. Some. ;D Ditto! Eee-hee-hee! And the disease of da eye are brill, too! my personal favourite is 'Sauron'. EDIT: Also just check out your site at the mention of goodies: 'pleez kill us', sheer genius! ;D

Yeah, pleez kill us is also really great.
Considering this and the last guest strip, it's interesting how easily GC lends itself to really dark humor.

I'm still a little surprised, incidentally, that Tom ran all three guest comics in the first week. At least he spaced them out.
It'll be interesting to see what'll appear next week. I still think that there should be a letter or postcard from Kat talking about her visit to Italy, and something (whether a letter to Kat or something else) that tells us what Annie did during the summer holiday at Gunnerkrigg (particularly since it would offer us an opportunity to see what she likes doing in her leisure time; we know so much about what Kat's favorite pursuits are, but not Annie's).

Zimmy is 1/8 backbeard. At least, I choose to believe she is until Tom says otherwise.

I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in the other 7/8 was Sadako.

Now now, posting again is hypocritical! Oh yeah... Damn, that's pretty meta.
Tom can lock it if he wants. Though I'd like to add that this guest comic is pretty awesome. Especially the runes. it's Lovecraftian horror, only without the racism and gratuitous use of the N word!

What's the name of that alphabet in Panel 6? I've been looking everywhere for it since I saw it Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove and again in this comic thebecomingcomic.com/2010/09/23/page-48/. Can someone please tell me what it is?

Have you tried asking the artists of the respective comics? Both of them have contact information on their websites. Other than that, it looks quite a bit like the first one listed here.
