Not everybody with a set of lockpicks is a thief, although I'm pretty sure that isn't what you meant. Some are just... "lock enthusiasts".

Gold star to the person who predicted Tom's alt text would be "Renard Renard Renard" in the last thread. Ooh, I get to call the next one! "RENARD X4 COMBO"

You should be wary, though. I don't know what the laws are like in Australia, but over here you can get into hot water for possessing "implements of burglary" on your person when in public.

72 would be annoying to carry.
Here in Australia (in most states) they need to prove you intended to commit a crime with them. They can also bump up burglary charges if you're found with them I think

I'd always thought it was illegal to have them in Aus unless you're a locksmith, but you're right- in QLD you can only have them in your house, but not elsewhere

Indeed! "Mid-state" no less. Though, likely to be moving back to Sydney in the not-so-distant future since I just quit my job here(!) Whereabouts are you?

72 would be annoying to carry. Sparrows used to sell a 72 and a 39 piece set that folds up to about the size of a 3" by 5" card and is about as thick as your average phone. You know, just in case you get gorilla fingers and your first twelve tension wrenches break... Always gotta be prepared. Two scrapes above, a pause, then one scratch below - in the same locations as many times before. I wonder if it's a message, a habit, or one of those silly things done in the memory of someone important. Or this could be our first hint that Renard is OCD.
