Etheric rocketry? Makes me wonder what the world outside the is like. There have to be people using this, despite being 'unable to explain it scientifically'. It's just too useful. The Court might even be considered Ludd-ish in its views on the subject.

Velocity via dimensional displacement? Cool, I upgrade my last nerd-theory on how the dorms work (perpetually falling into this dimension to displace air so the moon-pool works) to actual wildspec.

Whoa, is this some kind of gravity or space-warping device in there?
Looks perfect for interstellar flight if it's FTL capable.
Hell, why aren't they using it for interstellar flight already???

Hell, why aren't they using it for interstellar flight already??? Maybe the psychological and physiological effects of long-term exposure are still being studied. ;D

Hell, why aren't they using it for interstellar flight already??? If it's etheric-based, no doubt because they can't explain how and why it works. Certainly, if Donny and friends have been putting satellites up for twenty years, as a hobby, they must have had access to this method for at least that long. It really makes me wonder how the rest of the world views etheric technology.

Ahh well. I was half-hoping would Annie would sneak her blinker stone on board.

And two seconds from now, Annie realizes that she could have send a letter along.

Sounds like Tom knows his model rockets. And his model...uh, etheric space-warping relativistic missiles.
Could be any number of reasons why they don't use it for long-range space travel, but my guess is the etheric part doesn't work if you get too far from Earth.
...Or it just isn't really going all that fast. A few kilometers per second and the speed of light don't look much different to a human, but the former is slower than those Mars rovers that take months to get where they're going.

Well I guess that's why they didn't remove the cardboard boxes. I love how that rocket is just bending reality.

Model rockets are so much fun. Even the "doctored-up Estes Comanches with a D engine".
What I wouldn't give to launch that rocket, though.

...well, I guess that's how you achieve escape velocity with a model rocket.
Makes you wonder how much the world outside Gunnerkrigg Court in the ...Gunnerverse?.... has access to this kind of etheric technology.

Its never really been addressed and I don't think Tom will get around to that much. Sounds like Tom knows his model rockets. And his model...uh, etheric space-warping relativistic missiles. Could be any number of reasons why they don't use it for long-range space travel, but my guess is the etheric part doesn't work if you get too far from Earth. Good point since etheric energy requires life force (or perhaps THE Force) to operate, or at least is enhanced in the presence of living things.

My default assumption is pretty much that there's some Masquerade going on, but who knows. We haven't really seen much of the world outside the Court and the Forest, and we haven't seen any particular sign of the Court indoctrinating its students "now don't go around telling everyone that we have funny sapient robots and steampunky magic-science and one of the great Native American gods living across the way," but that doesn't mean much -- we don't necessarily see much of that kind of indoctrination "on screen" at Hogwarts or Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, so it's hard to know just how much Masquerade may be in force / holding up.

I get the impression that the students (with a few exceptions, like Annie's parents) generally remain at the Court even after they grow up, and probably don't venture into the outside world that often (except on occasional holidays), so that might not be much of an issue. Apparently the Court is more an analogue for the wizarding world than for Hogwarts.

Hmm, now that you mention it, there is certainly plenty of workspace to go around... and still most of the Court seems almost deserted most of the time. It had to be growing faster than they could get properly educated people to fill it up. And now I wonder if it is still growing.

Actually I'm thinking that the rocket could be using anti-grav technology similar to the field generator Kat used in the Science Fair. The one she turned into a ship?

"Ship" is way too generous for the contraption in question, but it's not the same. It makes "Zuuuuu" noise and, what's more important, Donnie & Tony had their orbital toys waaay earlier.

Makes Kats feat of building anti grav gens a little less impressive since launching sats like that was there hobby. Can't help but wonder if this is similar in any way to the super speed Ysengrin exhibits here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=684

Looks fancy, but not really efficient. I'm curious about what made you think it was inefficient. Especially since we have no idea about its capabilities other than that it can apparently distort light/space and it is capable of escaping Earth's gravity.
