Did anyone else just tear a hamstring jumping to a "gosh golly ANTHONY HAS CLONED ANNIE AND IS TEACHING THE CLONE MARTIAL ARTS" conclusion?

Suddenly flashback. Annie looks really cute here!
I was gonna call it "Please calm down" if no one else posted it for very much longer. xD

Annie looks good with a pony tail.
I'm kinda dreading this scene turning into borderline abusive sparring.

I think Annie is just showing surprise in this flash back because her father is touching her/possibly expressing concern for her well-being?
But from what we know of him, this is all just clinical formality, I'm sure.

My guess is Annie is reviewing her moments with her father and seeing them with some new understanding with what Donald has told her. Anyone want to guess which style of martial art Annie is going to be taught? I would imagine something quite practical, considering what Anthony is like. Also, just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of the cloth around her foot that Anthony is putting on her? I have seen similar on Martial Artists, but I do not understand why it is there. Edit: Did anyone else just tear a hamstring jumping to a "gosh golly ANTHONY HAS CLONED ANNIE AND IS TEACHING THE CLONE MARTIAL ARTS" conclusion? .....no. Although I find it interesting that Annie here looks older than she did in the flashback in chapter 31 (see here www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=814), which suggests that this takes place after that event. Maybe Anthony realised early on he was not able to save Surma. Also, Tom's art has really gotten better over time, especially in the last five or six chapters.

My guess is something Judo related, considering how she flattened Winsbury relatively early in the comic.

Good call with this. The correlation between semi-present backgrounds, and just style in general, seals today's page in my mind as a flashback. Without the fade to black cue, and in the context of Anja's "amazing computer," I was getting ready to embrace any number of wild theories.

That'd make some sense. Like a "what do I actually remember of this guy". Whatever is going on stuck in her mind, so it seems logical that she'd think of it when looking back. I'd say that the bandage is for stability. Putting weight on a foot that is not properly aligned can lead to serious pain, and in children it can lead to all kinds of weird stuff happening in the joints. Trainees in martial arts always run the risk of landing weird, so it's good to be prepared. I might also be to train kicking harder. My guess is something Judo related, considering how she flattened Winsbury relatively early in the comic. I had completely forgotten about that. I tip my hat to you, sir or madam.

Annie? The girl looks older than Annie is now (i.e. on prev. page), and definitely much older than she was in ch. 1. I presume that's Surma.

Looks younger to me, considering the head size and facial features rather than the hairstyle.

I got the impression it's a dream, and Annie fell asleep in the chair.

This girl looks definately younger than Annie in any of the present comics. You're just misinterpreting the stylicized art of the early chapters, here. As far as we can see here, Annie has the facial structure and physique of a child who isn't in her teens yet.

Suddenly flashback!
noblemanofreason > you should correct the url in your opening post so that it actually leads to page 1020, not to the front page of the site.

As far as we can see here, Annie has the facial structure and physique of a child who isn't in her teens yet. Well, ok, I guess I was off saying "older than Annie is now", but it still doesn't make sense. Annie could only interact with her father this way before chapter one. The girl doesn't look as young as Annie should have been before chapter one. Check page 268 panel 6, note how short Annie is at that point. Compare with page 1015 panel 7, or 1012 for that matter. Now put your hand next to your ankle, and check page 1020. The girl isn't that shorter than Anthony. Maybe it's younger Surma and younger Anthony or something. Which, btw, I'd expect to see at some point. Ok, waiting till Wednesday.

That's not her hand in today's last panel, that's Anthony's hand.

(From here) This page had struck me as being very familiar but it took a while for me to place it. Like I remember being told about her martial arts.

The idea that he doesn't care, and any evidence of 'caring' is actually just formality, is no more valid or invalid than the idea that he does care, and any evidence of 'not caring' is just him not realising what's hurtful.

Rounded corners at the top = start of flashback. Square corners at the bottom means the flashback will continue on Wednesday! Annie? The girl looks older than Annie is now (i.e. on prev. page), and definitely much older than she was in ch. 1. I presume that's Surma. Definitely Annie. Check the hair - straighter than Surma's, and the length is longer than previous flashbacks, but shorter than chapter 1. Beautiful update - I really like this one.

Well, that's the great debate, right? Does he really not care, or is he clueless about how his actions will be interpreted, or does he really care about Annie but just not care about how he's viewed?

I'd say that the bandage is for stability. Stabilizing the ankle is one reason. Another is that martial arts are usually trained barefoot, and when you just start out, the skin on your soles is very soft and can quickly develop huge blisters from the strain. Taping prevents that.

Tom answered a question on Formspring about where Annie learned martial arts by saying her dad initially taught her some, so I'm pretty positive we don't need a debate on whether that's Annie And yeah, I've been waiting for a flashback of that since I read it so I totally did an M. Bison "Yes!" when I saw the page. Also I'm going with Eversist's guess that she's looking surprised coz he's most likely not a very touchy-feely person usually. Also, Tony's face being hidden in most flashbacks is starting to seem like it's intentionally portraying the way she thought of him as "father" more than an actual person.

They are both so pretty on this page, it's amazing how much the art has grown even since that last flashback.

I hadn't realized that Antimony's father had ever actually interacted with her! So I'm pretty excited about the upcoming pages.

Up until now, rounded panel-corners like that have always meant "flashback", whether dream-based or audience-only. I think it's safe to assume that this is a flashback.
