At least now we know "cut through the very earth" doesn't mean it'll create a new canyon if she drops it.

But not cut through a shadow.

At first I was "Nooooooooooo Shadow" but then it occured to me that it is obvious that the Giggleblade/Tooth wouldn't be able to cut Shadow-2. Why would Coyote entrust Antimony (and by extension the Court) with something that could possibly become a threat to him or his creations (the glass-eyed men) in the future?

Partial kudos to whoever was concerned about Shadow2.
So can we now safely assume that this knife will have no problem with Jeanne?

To me it looks like the tip of the blade peeled Shadow from the floor, but because of the way it fell in the end he's only draped along the flat side of it for now. I don't think Coyote would have lied about its ability to cut things like that (Coyote never lies), unless he did tell a white lie and there are things that are immune, but again, I doubt it.

I'll just hope that Shadow's just draped around the knife. I guess we'll see Friday, until then I won't be able to sleep.
Gosh darn, this weeks comics are all Fridays in the cliffhanger-sense to me.

Coyote only implied that it was very sharp. He never said anything about what it can and cannot cut. Is anyone else extremely scared of the knife and hoping it will disappear from from the story very soon, just for safety's sake?

Interesting. Perhaps the purpose of the knife (besides creating unintentional physical comedy for Coyote's amusement) is indeed to sever the connection binding Jeanne to the world of the living (which, unbenownst to our heroes, is also restricting Coyote in some way).
I really, really, really hope they all consult with Jones before doing anything stupid.

www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=688Coyote said that the Giggleblade is: A) The keenest blade you'll ever find. B) That it can cut the very earth. That it can cut the earth has been demonstrated, it cuts right through the floor and through natural materials. The tricky thing here is on the interpretation of "Keenest blade". If we look the word "keen" up in the dictionary... www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/keen4: wonderful, excellent — keen·ly adverb — keen·ness \ˈkçn-nəs\ noun — keen on : very enthusiastic or excited about <wasn't keen on going> I think we can agree that the giggleblade is very enthusiastic about cutting things. My... It's practically laughing with joy! So yeah... Coyote doesn't lie. But he also didn't promise anything about what it could cut besides the earth and by extension materials gained from the earth. Or atleast that is how I'm interpretating it. Not a native speaker so I may be to anal about dictionary definitions. In any case it would be quite a shock when Parley takes it up with Jeanne and the blade proofs to be practically useless.

Compare to the previous page. You can see by the direction of the diagonal blue part of the hilt that Shadow is right on the cutting edge.

I think I understand now why everyone loves Parley. It is because her reactions represent a "normal" point of view, so readers empathize with her.
I mean, she lives in this big freak show that is the Court, where your average Gym teacher is Superman, the science teacher is a mad scientist, and you live in contact of deities and entities like Jones.
Parley herself teleports at will, so unless she does it very rarely, she should even lose her capability to open doors quickly (see the movie "jumper" for reference).
Yet her reactions are "normal". She freaks out when mindraped by the ghost. She is scared by the blade and drops it. She should be more used to these weirdnesses, shouldn't she?
Opinions?

She should at least be able to keep holding the sword, and not drop it like a clumsy newbie. I thought she was pretty good with the sword, but she still acts pretty clueless, considering the events in the last two pages...

Moral of the story:
Next time you hand a supernaturally effective weapon to someone, take a second or two to say "Here, take this, andbythewaybeforeyoutouchitIshouldwarnyouthatitisextremelysharpsoyoushouldbeextremelycarefulandnottouchanythingyoudontwanttoseverokaythanks."
Seriously, Antimony, poorly played.

The question now is, is it sharp enough to cut itself if given the chance?

Err...wait... does the Giggleblade float above the ground in the last panel? nope it is resting on the guard. the blade gives no resistance.it has no mass. and isn't affected by friction. it is an etheric blade. the handle is the entire weight of the sword. so the hilt counterbalances the blade and shadow two seeing as both don't weigh anything.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-oh I guess he's okay. That was me too! So glad Shadow is ok *breathes sigh of relief*, but Robot not so much. Kat will sort him out though. As for the sword... I guess it has some kind of safety mechanism which makes it balance with the cutting edge pointing upwards should someone accidently drop it in fright after slicing a robot in two. Y'know, 'cause these things happen.

Why does Shadow2 have a shadow?A more likely definition is the very first one, that you somehow seem to have skipped over. 1 a : having a fine edge or point : sharp

Hahaha you guys actually picked up Giggleblade? That makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I just went with the most absurdly inappropriate sword name I could think of and now all you guys are using it too? Hell to the yes.
At any rate poor Shadow 2 has got to be in the most awkward position of his life there. Has he ever been out of direct contact with a surface before? Also the shadowman casts a shadow, lolwut.

If we interpret "it can cut the very earth" to mean "it can cut everything that comes from the earth" that means ultimately it can cut everything… except shadows, since they come from the sun [sort of, I know a shadow is just the absence of photons]

Everyone would think that Coyote would mean the first definition (very, very sharp) while it could very well be what I quoted based on recent development. I agree that I'm probably looking way too much into a single word, but it is atleast plausible.

fillerb: Looks lke Coyote used the word literally in both ways in that it's the sharpest blade you'll find and very enthuanstic. Anyways, there is something in there that most people haven't even noticed or commented on. Shadow2 actually casts a shadow himself.

On my first read, I'd thought the blade fell to its side. Very interesting!
