I swear Tom can see the future and thus keep messing with us reactively in spite of the buffer strips.

It turns out Gunnerkrigg Court is really a comic about people coming out.

The "Mighty suspicious" certainly makes it sound like they know what to expect. The transition from that to word-of-formspring serious "WHAAAAT?!" is pretty jarring.
Also, I wonder what Bob's "Huh!" is.

Haha, nice reveal.
Seriously, though, Tom said on his FormSpring that the other kids honestly didn't know they were dating.

legion: How is Tom messing with us here? The whole "do others know Will and Janet are an item or not???" that was going one thread ago or two, and Tom is like "haha, I KNEW you would wonder that" with that comic, essentially.

It surprises me that it surprises everyone there they were dating.
Some thing more like "WHAA- wait actually that was pretty obvious" might have worked better

Yay! Especially as Janet is my favourite character.
Though I did think everyone already knew.

Third Story Time!

Could the third story be the explanation of how they hooked up and why they kept it a secret perhaps?

The transition might seem pretty jarring now, but in real life, people don't always see this kind of thing either, even if they joke about it. Oh, yes please!

To me that fits in with Bud's "Huh!" as only knowing them for a shorter period of time and perhaps not seeing them together and is thus actually suprised?

Fun fact: this chapter is now the third longest single-part chapter Tom has ever drawn.

It has the second longest length, too, since S1 and Fire Spike were tied at first place (43 pages).

Alright, Tom is comic book famous! If I was in Birmingham I would totally buy these.
(Also the Brimingham Forbidden Planet is a lot nicer than the Dublin Forbidden Planet).

Well, finally!
...Speaking of Janet, I wonder why she talks like that. Her dad doesn't, right?

Aww, looks like the resident romantic dorks are growing up.
Question now is, does her dad know?

For the people who are confused, consider that maybe the other kids suspected Janet and Willie secretly liked each other, but they did not expect that they had admitted it to each other and were secretly dating. So they were still surprised by that revelation.
That's the way I read the page anyway =]

The others: Oh, we're messing with them so hard. (Seriously, Paz and Matt's faces.) Willie and Janet: One-upped!
Perfect reveal.

The "WHAAT???" is totally appropriate. Sure, it may not be too surprising to find out that they're dating, I mean, they're all over each other. Most of them probably assumed that they hung out over the summer, got to like each other better, and started dating. They probably expect the couple to blush and stammer about it, to the enjoyment of all.
What they don't expect is willy's nonchalant admittance. They are shocked by this, and are confused by the "for ages" line. They had relatively little way of knowing prior to this, after all. (slightly nerdy teens of that age don't know what to look for.)

Maybe I'm counting wrong but isn't this the fifth story? First the haunted mando then the story about moon girl next the story bout Kat and Paz then Annies and now this one.

In your faces, kids... (turns an eyestalk on the previous thread) ...and mine, i guess. Chitin and Chitosan protect me! <thud> Yet, note that neither Annie nor Jack is there. I swear Tom can see the future and thus keep messing with us reactively in spite of the buffer strips. It surprises me that it surprises everyone there they were dating. I, for one, specified " anyone who pays attention"- it wasn't obvious, just noticeable. Most of this being from Annie's point of view and all that. maybe the other kids suspected Janet and Willie secretly liked each other, but they did not expect that they had admitted it to each other and were secretly dating. So they were still surprised by that revelation. Probably, that - the difference between their games and Parley's way to be all over Smitty is less than readily visible.
