Maybe its his way of sinking the Annie X Jack shippers? I think you're implying an antagonistic relationship by Tom against his readership that never manifests in the comic itself (no matter how much we annoy him in real life). I think people should stop thinking that Tom does things just to "sink shippers". If Tom hadn't wanted the Annie X Jack storyline we've seen, and hadn't desired the impression it gave to people, he wouldn't have set it up in the first place. It's just a surprise twist, people. This wasn't meant to antagonize Annie/Jack shippers, same way that Kat declaring herself straight wasn't meant to antagonize Annie/Kat shippers (no matter what some jerkfaces like chibisoma thought). He doesn't do things in his comic just because he wants to hurt readers.

This page had a lot of friday potential.
Next page we get to find out that Jack is gay.

I don't buy it. Something is wrong there. She may not be interested in him romantically, but she quite obviously does like him. Maybe she's just be putting on a show for Bud. In the meantime half of the Gunnerkrigg readership will die from asphyxiation while holding their breath in anticipation of Friday...

Ouch! Don't worry, Jack, apparently Kat is totally available and eager to prove she's straight after all....

She's shit-testing him and he's doing "agree and amplify". Oh Jack, you're such a player.
Since Annie's new at this, she's doing a "look at me I'm shit testing" face, and then is visibly annoyed when it doesn't have the reaction she expects. Remember from chapter 32, she tends towards the naively manipulative when a relationship is important to her.

I felt oddly proud of her. It'd be equally or maybe even more wonderful if she doesn't end up with anyone, since part of her charm is her autonomy. <3

Tom what are you doing to my head?
I can kinda see where Annie might be coming from with that...but "phew"? I have no idea what the hell Jack's thinking right now

Prediction: that "phew" made her much more interested in him.

Jones: You have 14 years of detention to look forward to.
Jack: Aww man.
Jones: Or you can try to seduce Antimony Carver for me.
Jack: Aww man.

What did Annie expect? Jack's just giving as good as he got. I like it. === I also like the way Jack's face goes from a longer, more mature, serious look back to a rounder, younger, more mischievous look between panels five and six. It's a side effect of him looking away and up, but it shows very nicely how these two are on the cusp of maturity, able to shift back and forth with a glance, a shadow, an expression. === Prediction: that "phew" made her much more interested in him. Yes! Exactly.

Looks like that chibisoma fellow ragequit for no reason; oh Tom, you sure do love to tease! -ChenMaestro If he didn't know by now that very little in Gunnerkrigg is played straight (and then only when no-one expects it!), he can't be a very observant reader anyway.

I like this. I didn't expect a sappy romantic moment because ANNIE AND JACK and also GUNNERKRIGG COURT but here i can't tell whether this is for Bud's benefit, whether this is Annie genuinely saying "I don't LIKE like you Jack", or whether this is just more flirting in the way of teens who are only still one or two steps past putting sand in people's lunches to show they like them.
Probably all of the above.

Yea, Annie's behavior makes sense now. It was a litttle strange for her to let Jack so near in the previous page. She _NEVER_ liked him. Maybe she is used to Coyote not respecting personal space, so she didn't mind it, either. I dunno. She seemed to like him well enough before he started to go all threatening. Not really. The pages you quote show that Annie fully expects the 2 tech nerds to like each other, and she was happy for kat.

Perhaps Jack will explain that "Phew" by telling the next story?

Yep, she's behaving the same way towards Jack that she did towards Kat when she first returned from the forest. I think it means she likes him.

My prediction goes something along the lines of: "If you don't like me, then I don't need to worry about impressing you!" Followed of course by SLOPPY MAKEOUTS.Other than that, though, daaaaamn Annie's gone from ice-cold to catty in less than 10 chapters. (Residential was #24 and she was still firmly frigid back then.) Way to friggin' character develop!

Anonymous on 4chan performed the proper analysis of this page. There are only 3 possibilities: = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = 1. Annie x JacK : a) They're ad-libbing, because they know the crab thing is watching them and they're plotting to go off and make out somewhere secret. (Or, as someone mentioned above, Annie is flirting and playing hard to get.)
2. Evil Jack : b) Jack is relieved because he's about to backstab her.
3. Annie x Kat : c) They both don't actually like each other, and we're back to lesbian/beastiality shipping.

It'd be equally or maybe even more wonderful if she doesn't end up with anyone, since part of her charm is her autonomy. <3 Count me as another person who thinks that Annie doesn't need a love interest. (If anything, I mentally echoed Jack's "Phew!" when reading this page, for different reasons.)

Perhaps Jack will explain that "Phew" by telling the next story? Or, Tom switches to the other kids just to make us wait even more. You know how much he loves teasing the readership when he feels like it.

Antimony's facial expression is pretty mean for delivering a rejection in panel 4, eh what? I think I'll refloat the S.S. AnnieXJack by asking if anyone thinks she might have been planning to tease him by saying, "I don't think I like you..." [page break] "...I think I loooooove you?" But instead, counter-snark! WHEN DID THIS FORUM GET SO WEIRD There was a time when it wasn't weird? I must've been sick that day.

Today's page put an unbelievably huge smile on my face, which got gradually bigger from panel 4 to the last one and ended up in something resembling coyote a few posts above me. Thank you Tom, I needed that.

Touché, Annie! Right back at ya! But the way she delivered her line in 4th panel, her smile... I just have a feeling that coyote taught her a little too well...
