(was it ever figured out how tom does the noise? closest i've gotten is monochrome plasma set to value mask) I am like 99% sure he uses a paper texture (either a stock image that he bought, or a picture that he took himself) rather than generating the noise with a Photoshop filter. I think he mentions the noise in one of the videos where he talks about the comic, but I can’t be bothered to check it right now. I did a little experiment to see if I could do a similar effect with a paper texture that I had scanned myself a couple of years ago for a now dead project of mine. I did it with a page from my own webcomic, and got this: i.imgur.com/AODUhRe.jpg (the original page is here: emptyhallways.cfw.me/comics/11/). It doesn’t really look like Tom’s noise, but it’s certainly closer than any sort digitally generated noise, so it’s very likely that I’m right about how he does it. That also means that you can’t make a noisy effect that looks exactly like the one he uses, unless you have access to the exact same paper texture. Here is the texture that I used: i.imgur.com/Ozvcg5D.jpgHow I applied it: I made it grayscale (with “color > desaturate > average” in GIMP), ajusted the levels (color > levels > auto), then put it over the background layer with 40% opacity and set to “overlay”. The final comic page size is about 40% the size of the original, so I scaled the texture down to 40% too. I had this texture inside a .xcf file in a Google Drive folder and never opened it once I’d saved it. Now that I have uploaded it to a place anyone can access, I am making it public domain. As long as you don't claim to have created it yourself (I honestly wouldn’t care if you did though), you can use it for whatever purpose you’d like. EDIT: I thought I remembered in which chapter Tom mentions the background noise so I watched the video and, yep, I was right. To be totally honest, I'm rather sick of that meme. My sister's picked it up now, and thinks it's the best thing ever, so I see it on about 68% of all videos now. |

I'm not that savvy in goth culture, so I don't know if there will or should be any more. Potter/Baloo There is no conceivable context that would make that combination of words okay in any conceivable way. But in the world of crack pairings, that would be tuesday.
