Where's Sir Young? He might be a contender, although IMO we don't know of anything bad he did that Diego didn't take part in.

As we've all heard by now, Our Glorious Forest Medium just used some of her incredible power gained from centuries of experience to settle a long-running plot thread. But how will her actions be construed by the common folks of Gillitie Forest? How will the Canvey Island Monster, the fey, and the other forest creatures interpret Antimony's accomplishments? I heard someone say that there were two worlds that were at war. The Medium spent 1790 years planning to bring them together. She started by learning everything there is to know about the ether. Then she got the two biggest moons to help her. But that's nothing compared to what she did next! The Medium journeyed deep into the labriynth of Gunner's Crete, and she created an entirely new creature! It was just like Coyote's shadow men. Except, instead of glass, it had a shiny silver body, because the Medium imparted her fiery glow to her creation. And ya wanna know what happened next? The metal men she created were so powerful, they could make a new god! A metal goddess created by Our Medium. But trouble came her way. There was a demon haunting Antimony. He'd been following her for her whole life, and even killed her mother, and came to find her! But the Medium brought peace to his mind with her logical ways, and he became friendly once he heard her voice! After she spend all that time with the Anwyn, she journied into the underworld and found the legendary First King of the Anwyn. He'd been dead a really long time, but when the Medium found him he granted her power over rabbits! Or maybe it was hares? Either way I heard she can make hares go up now. But what she did next was even more amazing. The Forest Medium pushed the two worlds together to make them stop fighting. A lot of people died in the war, but the medium crossed the River Styx on a boat with both worlds, and she fought death itself to bring everyone back to life!

As I noted previously, I caught up on Gunnerkrigg Court just as the treatise at the end of volume six was posted. This chapter is the first one I've followed as it was released. And now it is over, and it is time to begin the cycle anew. The world will continue to spin, but for me, at least, THIS REALLY IS A BIG DAY!

As the chapter has ended, I am locking this poll. "No one" is the winner.

In Chapter 31, we see a flashback in which Surma pretends to be romantically attracted to Rey for the purpose of luring him into a trap.
In Chapter 34, Annie pretends to be romantically attracted to Jack, for the purpose of...maybe hurting him somehow? Getting information out of him? She isn't really sure.

So I know I'm late to the party, but the first panel of this page keeps bugging me, and I didn't see anyone else mentioning it. Smitty says he couldn't go into the forest with Annie while Parley was away training. But in Chapter 54, Smitty went into the forest alongside Annie and <Snuffle>'s friend.

Am I the only one kind of upset by the way Tom did all this? I don't want to see Annie forced into becoming a psychopomp to save Mighty Eyebrows. To be honest, I'd rather him have died. I don't like this turn at all. I was half-hoping Smitty would die so that we could see Paz become the new Medium. But overall, I'm not particularly upset by how this went. We still don't really know what Annie agreed to, though. I assume we'll find out in a year of real-time

Can we relax now? Can we? can we? can we? Time for an all-out war to decide who gets custody over Fire Head Girl: the psychopomps or Coyote! Or Anthony/the Court, but no one expects them to win control of her.

One other possible interpretation of "you belong to us now" that I haven't seen mentioned yet: What if she now belongs to them in the same way that everyone else does? They didn't come for Surma because she didn't belong to them. She wasn't in their jurisdiction, because her essence as a fire elemental was passed on to Annie instead. But what if that essence now does belongs to them, the same as any other mortal's soul? What would that mean for Annie? And for any children she might have? I like that idea. However, it doesn't seem to fit with Annie's line in the previous page: "I'll do what you want." It could be that once Andrew eventually dies, she will have to be a psychopomp for the amount of time Andrew lived after today. But, again, I feel like that would be too easy, since she won't have to pay the price during the course of the story.

Hrm, how about this possibility: Smitty must permanently give up his powers and live as a normal human.
On the one hand, this "price" might seem anticlimactic, in that it would eliminate the potential for a "difficult decision" by the protagonists as to whether it is worth it. Having Smitty alive without extra luck seems obviously superior to having him just die here, at least without an additional catch.
However, if this is indeed the price, it would neatly explain why it is so rare for someone to escape death (since only an etheric-powered individual can do it, and someone can only do it once). It would also explain why Surma wasn't able to evade death, since she had already effectively given her power to Annie. And it might give us the opportunity to see a new Court Medium without Smitty having to die.
A slightly more likely (IMO) possibility is that Parley will need to give up her powers, or possibly both Parley and Smitty.
I don't really think either of those will be the entirety of the sacrifice needed to keep Smitty alive. However, I don't think it will be "someone else has to die," because that seems to obvious. And, on a personal note, I hope we don't end up with a rehash of my least favorite Euripides play (Alcestis).

(unless the transformation into a Guide doesn't take place right away) Hmm...what if the price is that she will become a psychopomp after she dies? That would almost seem too easy, since it would mean we wouldn't have to explore the ramifications of Annie's sacrifice during the story (it would just be something that happens 70ish years after the story ends). Anthony still doesn't know that Annie technically is one and Surma was. Anthony knows that Surma had some involvement with the afterlife guides, though we don't know how much of the details he understood.

Eh who needs boring doctors and Court technology when you can get 'pomps to heal in return for the price? That's way better than getting in trouble for doing risky stuff without adult supervision. My hunch is that Andrew's wound is at least partially etheric. If so, then a)Annie would probably be able to tell that Smitty's wound is partially (or entirely) etheric, and b)A Court medical doctor would be of no help whatsoever in saving Andrew's life. Annie told Parley to wait because (I suspect) she knew that teleporting to a doctor wouldn't help. She will either try to convince the psychopomps to heal Andrew, or she will demonstrate her own powers and try to heal him herself. If she is unable to do either of those things, then it would still be a bad idea to teleport to a Court doctor, because they still would be unable to help. If she can't get the psychopomps to help and can't heal Smitty herself, the best bet would be to teleport to a more powerful ether-user who might be willing to help. The trouble is, there aren't that many of those

Maybe, though the question is - how? Short of Annie and Kat going to live in Gilltie Wood (it's unlikely that the Court would allow that to happen Huh? How could the Court decide that Annie can't go live in the forest? They can kick her off of Court grounds, which would allow her to go to the forest, or they could keep her locked up in the Court to prevent her from going to the forest (and risk Coyote's anger again). But how could the Court get the power to "expel" Annie from both the Court and the Forest? You're probably right about Kat, in that the forest-folk might not like a giant robot. I'd say that getting Rey's soul back into his original body would actually be pretty easy... if he wanted to go back. After all, we know he can hop out of the body he's currently in (leaving it dead... and his current body was originally a plushie, i.e. already dead) and into another body if that body has eyes. He has that power himself. His original body has eyes. At most he needs someone to open them and hold them open for a few seconds. He also needs permission from Kat to take another body, which she hasn't yet granted (that we know of, on panel), aside from a blanket escape clause concerning Anthony. But if Rey did decide he wanted to go back to his original body, it's probably safe to assume Kat would let him. The Court might try to stop him, resulting in a breakout sequence, and they presumably wouldn't allow him to continue living in the Court, but he could get his body back eventually if he wanted it badly enough.

The Court might notice that they surveillance devices they put in Smitty's food stop working, since ghost-Smitty might not be able to eat.

If they are involved in student's death, they are facing serious punishment "or worse, Expulsion" ;D And which would make the webcomic all the more difficult to continue in a recognizable form. Possibly the only way out after that would be for Tom to create two new characters, another girl with etheric talents and another girl with scientific/technological talents, have them come to Gunnerkrigg, become friends, and take over the investigations that Annie and Kat began - and even that would have its problems. No, for the sake of more "Gunnerkrigg Court", Smith has to live. Eh, not really. Parley may get demoted for failing in her job as the Court Medium's protector, but there's a pretty big gulf between fighting really hard and failing to protect him and causing his death. She might get punished, but she could probably be safe from expulsion. Annie could get "expelled," but what would that really mean? She wouldn't be taking normal acedemic classes anymore, but we barely see those anyways. She might not be able to live in on-campus housing, but, again, barely anything happens in her current house. She still has a home very close to Gunnerkrigg Court, and she still can still go there regularly, both as a medium (the Court couldn't refuse when the previous medium wanted to come to the Court), and possibly as a psychopomp (does Paz have any animals with a fire-connection?) All in all, Annie wouldn't really lose much by getting expelled. It might even set off the next development in the Reynard story (e.g., with Annie living in the forest, the Court decides to forcibly take Reynard from Annie and Kat, so Kat and/or Annie break him out and he goes to live with Annie in the forest). Kat is the one who probably has the most to fear as far as punishment from the Court goes. She's not allowed to be off-campus at all, regardless of who dies. The Court can nomrally track her position through food, so they'd know she was involved. However, Kat was involved with the plan to fool the Court's tracking device in Faraway Morning, so it's plausible that she would have done something similar to prevent the Court from knowing her location while this fight is going on. However, I still think Smitty is going to live, for a few reasons. Firstly, the fact that Annie and Kat just sat back and watched during the time between disabling the arrow and the elf meeting Jeanne means that one or both probably could have prevented Smitty's death (if e.g. after disabling the arrow, Annie had joined the fight for the time it took for the elf to climb out of the water). If Smitty dies here, it makes the main characters look pretty bad. Moreover, we really haven't seen Annie do much yet in either this chapter or the last. Kat, Parley, and Andrew have done almost everything (with some help from Blue), since Annie couldn't solve the puzzle in the arrow. We may be about to see Annie really contribute by healing Andrew. She might be able to heal him with her own etheric powers, or her diplomat skills could be the key to persuading the psychopomps to do something in Smitty's favor. And on the off-chance that Smitty's wound is entirely physical (i.e., Jeanne's departure got rid of any etheric injury), they are just one bip away from Anthony and his super-medicine.

Post by bgb16999 on Jan 20, 2017 23:35:35 GMT
The key question IMO is whether the wound is a purely phsyical wound (i.e., he is injured like a normal human stabbed with a normal knife), or is at least partially etheric. If it's the latter, Annie may be able to heal him somewhat. If they're really desperate, they could bip to wherever Zimmy is in the hopes that she could do something (since she's the only person other than Jeanne who we've actually seen curing etheric illnesses/injuries).
If it's a purely physical wound that just happened to have been caused by an etheric weapon, then the best course of action is probably teleporting to Anthony right away.

Maybe the conversation they just had counted as their Final Record, and Annie recorded it without them realizing (after all, Diego's Final Record was just his last line in life). Or maybe she did record a final record and we'll see it in a flashback next chapter, after we deal with Smitty.

She died but he was kept alive by the arrow's power? Ya know if you are talking about Jeanne and you start a sentence with "She died and--", then there's only one way to finish it. Well, two ways, actually, depending on whether you are a human or a robot.

C'mon Annie, at least let them smooch once before you snuff out the last bit of their existence for good. Am I the only one who thinks Annie should let them have some time (a couple years/decades) together before sending them to the unknown of the other side? The court could use a replacement for Mort after all She might not have the power to grant ghosts the ability to stay--remember the RotD and the afterlife guides are different "departments." Also, as far as Mort-replacements go, I doubt either Jeanne or the elf would want to remain trapped in Gunnerkrigg Court, which Jeanne herself described as a prison during life. Plus,

Okay, here's one possible sequence of events:
Parley and Smitty bip to Anthony's house.
PARLEY: Medic! We have an emergency! ANTHONY: What the hell were you kids doing? PARLEY: Not really the time!
Anthony operates on Andrew until he is stabilized. Meanwhile, ANNIE brings Jeanne and the elf into the ether. Later, when Andrew is stable:
ANTHONY: Okay, now tell me what dangerous shenanigans you got yourselves in to? PARLEY: What's the Omega Device? ANTHONY: Wha--how would you have heard of that?!? PARLEY: Hold on, I'll be back in under a minute.
PARLEY exits via teleportation, returning shortly with ANNIE and/or KAT, having returned Robot, Red, and Red's to their respective homes. PARLEY: You'll tell us about the Omega Device, and we'll tell you how Andrew got hurt.
After they exchange information. ANNIE: You won't tell the Court our secret, for the safety of everyone involved, and we won't tell Ysengrin about the Omega Device. Your secret stays safe, our secret stays safe. Deal?
If anything I just said is in any way sort of kind of like what happens, I will claim bragging rights.

Another possibility, since Kat already surprised Annie with unexpected powers, would be for Annie to surprise us with an unexpected power. Annie burns the knife in a flame of healing, destroying the knife and returning Smitty to life. It's either that, or we get a full-out major character death

Every time I read this page I thought about a local superstition; If someone in my family would give a knife or another sharp object as a present, they would add something like a cake to be cut with it. The idea is the knife would otherwise "cut" the friendship. I decided to look it up, and the belief seems to be quite common (with all kinds of local variation) And of course the ties between Surma and Jim were broken. Writing this I suddenly realise..Okay, I know I'm responding to a post that is nearly three years old, but... what does this mean for a possible friendship between Jeanne and Andrew, now that Jeanne has given Andrew a "gift" of a sword through the chest?

Wow, thanks gpvos ! Oops. While reading this list, I've looked at page 792. And this sentence captured my attention: "We wanted to lure him into the court, but ~ we didn't he would kill someone to do it." I wonder what "we" means here. a) "we - the court" Or rather b) "we - group of friends who get too bold, decide to deal with that on their own, and somebody died because of this" ? Or "we- the group of friends who were instructed to capture Rey by the Court administration, but weren't told that he was likely to kill someone even though they knew it to be the case."
