Never a great sign when a mom uses the words "young lady". I guess it would be easier if Kat had broken grandma's vase rather than time.

Surprised that Annie was referring to Anja separate from Donnie as if Donnie wouldn't be equally as concerned about his daughter (and also helpful with the tictoc) but there you have it. Anja is the one who built the first version of the etheric computer, and is not only a scientist but also a witch, so the best person to help with breaking the space time continuum (and not just a parent who'd worry about her daughter). It's a matter of specialty, just like Anthony was the right person to help with the building of a body because of his biology / medical background. It's obvious that telling Kat's mom also means telling Kat's dad and that he will help where he can.

Ugh, seeing Paz mentioned still makes me bristle. I hope her confrontation and attempt at intimidation isn't just swept under the rug. Haven't the events of this chapter just proved that Paz WAS right? Recognising Kat's problem long before Annie did, even though her solution was wrong. She saw there was a problem, but she was completely convinced that the problem was something Annie did. It was just cruel and wrong to tell Annie she didn't deserve to be Kat's friend based on mere assumptions. I admire Annie's restraint and maturity mentioning Paz is worried without all the other stuff Paz said. Personally I would seriously consider breaking up with a gf who threatens and accuses my friends in this manner.

My guess: Kat is well aware of the darker implications (and complications) of this whole thing, and isn't at all pleased. She's clearly overwhelmed by what she's doing.

Kat is still looking really sad... Wildspec but maybe she can only save one of them? Nah. I think she looks weird because... one of the alternate Annies was created by Loup. The other was created by Kat all those years ago. Actual Annie died. Imagine telling someone they should be dead.

Wait, is the leading theory that a future Kat made the birds... ...and sent them back in time to save Annie from falling off the bridge? And Annie was supposed to die that night, and that's why NEITHER of them should be in this timeline? WHAT Yes. Kat well on her way to reality-shaping godhood.

The last couple pages seem off somehow. The way I read it: 2303: Annies: "Kat, we're worried you're not well." 2304: Kat: "I'm not well because of your situation!" 2305: Annies: "But our situation is not a big deal." Kat: "It's a HUGE deal!" 2306: Kat: "I'm so grateful you've showed me "impossible" things are possible. 2307: Annies: "You've helped everyone so much, Kat! You are awesome!" So, why doesn't Kat "buy it"? Seems like she went completely off-topic there, maybe preparing for a "buuut..." that never came? I think it's worth rereading the whole conversation between Annies and Zimmy: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=2260All of it is foreshadowing for what is happening right now. Especially this page: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=2265The "but", I think, is this: She's like someone who was starting to get used to go into the pool and thought "oh, ok, this is weird but somehow I can stay afloat". But then, the ocean showed up. Whith friggin' whales and everything. Kat is becoming something in the ether, but she's been oblivious to that so far. Now she's starting to see more stuff. Because of all the things she did for Annie, she started doing and understanding more, but she was kind of oblivious about the implications. I remember that invention of hers at the science fair ( www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=70 ): Kat: "So, to take a better look at those crystals, I put them in anti-grav unit..." Everyone: "YOU DESIGNED AN ANTI-GRAV UNIT?" Kat: "Huh, sure, but whatever. The crystals..." Everyone: "BUT FLYING CARS! FLYING EVERYTHING!" Kat: "Whatever, I just needed it for those crystals." Annie *falls down a bridge* Kat: "Ok, ok, I'll make that flying car" It's the same with the robots. She is completely oblivious to the implications of what she's doing. The magnitude of creating a new species is flying right past her. She's just helping out some friends, whatever. Now I think, with what has happened to Annie, with the implications of what it means to just create alternate timelines, she is starting to understand something new and finally the implications are freaking her out. And when it stops freaking her out long enough for her to actually "get it", as Zimmy puts it, then she might well finally become an actual god. This girl will be capable of shaping reality. Annie fell down a bridge again, and Kat, in order to help her out, is going to have to warp the entire damn space-time continuum.

Wait a minute. Has Kat ever seen Coyote when he does tricks? Like warp reality or something? Or was he always just a "Normal Being" in her eyes? And the reality warp just didnt happen for her?
Nope; Kat has never been in Coyote or Loup's presence before so we can't really be sure what would happen just yet. I remember there were plans of Kat going into the forest with Annie, but her parents forbid it. Anybody remember that page? Maybe they were just cautious, but narratively speaking there is probably an important reason why Kat was never allowed to meet Coyote. I'm glad she questions what happened, tbh. I have a lot of questions myself and finally someone is asking them for me.

It's not silly to her. I don't know how to explain it, but uderstanding how the world works is what Kat does. It's no surprise if she's obsessed with this and can't let go. Is it no surprise? After all they have been through together? She's literally seen Annie be a guide for a ghost. She's seen a million different examples of magic from not just Annie, but from her mother, other people in the Court, Forest people, etc. Her girlfriend speaks to animals. Sure, maybe some of this she could rationalize, but a lot of she can't. Even if she'll never understand magic and it bothers her, why this particular thing? It's not that it "bothers" her, she just wants to understand what is going on, like she always does. She's never shrugged and let magical things go past her without asking questions. Kat questions the ether, and she uses the ether in her machines, she actually knows a great deal about it by now. She uses an etheric computer to make things go from one place to the next and she transfers robot souls in living bodies. There are forces she can't fully understand, she doesn't know why exactlythey do this or that, but she can find out what they do, and predict what they'll do next, and use that knowledge. That's science. The double Annies means there isn't one universe, but a multiverse out there. It's a huge, huge thing and the fact that nobody else is even remotely interested in that is what surprises me. Of course Kat needs to understand. I look forward to what she'll do once she does.

That took a turn for the much less serious. With Paz's reaction last time, I was expecting Kat to have a much more personal problem. Maybe more will be revealed in the coming weeks, but so far, this seems surprisingly silly? It's not silly to her. I don't know how to explain it, but uderstanding how the world works is what Kat does. It's no surprise if she's obsessed with this and can't let go.

Well. I never thought just handing the water to Loup was a good idea, but I doubt the Court will do a better job of negotiating with him. He was only willing to talk with Antimony because he likes her.

I don't get what the Annies are salty about. Guarantee they seen naked elves before, and it ain't like either of them are in Egger's league or even interested in the dude. (She's got the hots for that married elf dude, yeah?) Are they just pissed folks are still getting laid during the forest apocalypse? Or do they expect someone from a completely different culture to follow arbitrary English prude code? I think they are just teens and generally embarrassed at the idea of sex. Also they might have a secret crush on Eglamore that they absolutely refuse to acknowledge.

There was a body of water with a boat on it in the last treatise. Given the chapter page image, a metaphor for the robot's horizons beginning to expand? I had thought it represented Jeanne and her beau sailing away into the ether. Yes. The treatises are mostly a summary of past events, not future ones, and Jeanne leaving was a big event of that particular book.

Is she a bit conflicted about what she is doing here? She probably is, but that very conversation about life and death is also the reason she is so set on what she is doing right now. The rest of the Court can deactivate a robot and think nothing of it. But to her it's a form of murder. She's trying to save them. Personally I think once she's explained the situation, the golems will want to help her. Those robots are their children, or their descendants at least, and I doubt they would like what is happening to them.

Annie has already given some thought to which part of this is troubling Kat so much. She's not as oblivious as Paz believes, even though she clearly didn't know how bad it was (not surprising, given how evasive Kat has been with her lately)

Horrible thought: If this Kat is in a really bad way, the Kat who's in the alternate universe where Annie (probably) didn't come back at all has got to be a complete mess. She is. Remember neither of the two Annies is from this timeline. Even though there are two of them, this Kat's Annie never came back from the forest. Annie is too busy dealing with the whole mess to think about what could have happened to a third version of her. But for this Kat, the Kat from this timeline, her friend went to the forest and never came back. That's why she can't sleep. This is the girl who built a flying ship to rescue her probably dead friend from the ravine, and then apologized because she wasted time crying. Her Annie is gone, and she won't rest until she's found her. (That said, I think Paz really should be more sensitive, Annie is dealing with a lot too and none of this is her fault).

both sensing he was in danger sounds like a reasonable familiar-connected possibility... we don't know the extent of familiar-related abilities yet, tho I think we will be seeing some shortly! Sometimes things in comics happen just for humor. Like when Kat suddenly had a cup of tea to offer to Juliet. Also they both needed to contact the rest of their party and it was the only available option, it's not that much of a stretch. So they both knew they could contact him. C!Annie actually read the manual but F!Annie needed Cvet to tell her? My guess is they probably both read the manual, which is why they both new *how* to contact Renard, but this particular feature didn't occur to either of them immediately because they're still fairly new to the whole familiar thing.

I find it odd that no one has mentioned Eglamore as a crush possibility. Not that I think I necessarily know. Just that that's where *my* mind goes when I think of "really embarrassing crush for Annie to have" *facepalm* She really... Doesn't like him though. He tried to act like he was her dad in the beginning and it pissed her off. I don't see her warming up to him that much. Having a crush on someone doesn't mean that someone cannot piss you off. In fact you're bound to have complicated feelings about having a crush on an adult teacher who used to be your mom's boyfriend and hates your dad for marrying her. I think it's likely Annie is incredibly annoyed at herself for having that particular crush, which is why she can't say it aloud even to herself, and has to cross off that person explicitely whenever thinking about potential boyfriends. We saw Annie questioning the nature of Eglamore and Jones' relationship, we also saw her combing her hair early on before entering Eglamore's office. There's something going on in, but something she's very determined not to act on.

Akchually, none of the blame falls to F!Annie here. She was not present during these "trying" times, and as such, can not know if SHE would've reacted the same way as C!Annie. Perhaps there IS something wrong/different between the two of them. Is it introspection if you're talking to an external you? Or is that outrospection? Extraspection? Endospection? That pattern of behavior has been present long before Annie's current ordeal. Think back, when was the last time Annie did the emotional support job for her friend? And how many times has Kat conforted and supported Annie in that time? Sure, Annie had a lot on her hands. But now that she's getting better, it's time she started correcting the course.

Sure, once you started being a dick, you should keep doing that until you die. Never ever try to better yourself, it's just plain annoying. Want some gasoline? If we pour it on that strawman it'll burn so much better. Look, I get where you come from. But Annie just came back from a very confusing and scary meeting with a demi-god to find out she's now competing with a double for her life at home. You think it's the perfect time to launch into a long, heart-wringing apology, I think it's a perfect time to make dinner and make her feel welcome. Frankly, if he picked such a time to say, well, all the stuff you listed, *that* would annoy me. It's going to be a painful conversation for Annie, and bring up a lot of difficult feelings. She's got enough on her plate right now without dad making it all about his tragic backstory the minute she gets home. I do hope she'll get her apology, though.

Ugh. Every time he acts normal it pisses me off because where was this when she needed it, Anthony!? For some reason it feels especially gross here where he's with her. Like all the times he was an emotional and just general neglectful dick to her didn't happen. Sure, once you started being a dick, you should keep doing that until you die. Never ever try to better yourself, it's just plain annoying.

[...] Is that a connection? Sounds to me like they're connected somehow. You're making lots of speculations and I think that's pretty interesting, but I don't really understand what you think today's page proves. "Coyote is a very powerful being who swims in the ether and the RotD is part of the ether" is definitely true, but we already knew that last year. The possibility that Coyote talks to the ghosts exists, but it's not any more probable now than it was six months ago. I'm just confused. While it's true that "other departments were affected" the damage was primarily to the RotD. We don't know that. We assumed it, because we heard about the damage from the RotD. But now it seems like the Forest was hit very hard too, and was only preserved because Coyote held it together. I think what Coyote is perceiving in that panel is damage to the ether as a whole. *That* is the big revelation of this page, in my eyes: all of the etheric world was broken by Diego's device. And The RotD is a part of that, but the damage goes far, far beyond it. And now all Loup can do to keep the entire Forest from crumbling is to time-freeze the whole place. It's possible this is just the center of the explosion and it will spread even beyond the Forest. And Kat ominously kept the damn arrow in her lab.

Coyote may not have known about Jeanne being the ghost but the middle panel of today's update appears to show that he was aware of the damage to the etheric world (which we know thanks to that bit in ch. 47 was primarily the RotD) and who resolved the situation. No, all we learned from that is that the RotD is a part of the etheric world (but we already knew that). The RotD was focused on damage to itself but also said they weren't the only ones affected. Coyote was aware of damage to the ether as a whole. We have zero element to claim Coyote did anything to resolve or fix anything in the RotD. As far as we know, he only maintained balance in the Forest. he is apparently gaining information from there We have other more likely sources for all the information he knew about. Also the fact he knew so little about Jeanne as a person would rather be proof he doesn't get information from the RotD, because they definitely know her name even though they had no details. assuming "Loup" is telling the truth about being able to swat 'pomps like flies, can affect how they operate But the RotD and the psychopomps are not the same at all? They merely interact (reluctantly) with each other. Whatever Loup can do to psychopomps, it doesn't say much about what he can do to ghosts. Coyote is probably aware of the RotD, as an element of the ether that he doesn't really care about. But as far as interactions with the morbidly humorous ghosts go, I don't see any reason to think it ever happened.

Uh oh. Coyote has powers over life and death now, does he? So Surma willingly walked away from a being who could've somehow kept her alive. The psychpomps are not death, they just make sure the ether runs smoothly by guiding souls after people died. They didn't even show up when Surma died. Just because Coyote / Loup can chase away the psychopomps doesn't mean he can do anything about a person's natural death. Uh, no. Why?

Either Loup is lying (again) or I've always wrongly interpreted Tom Siddell's answers about this: Q: So.... coyote made a big deal about a minor squabble--
TS: Incorrect. He didn't even know about Jeanne and her guy.And more to the point: Q: Did Coyote know Jeanne before he divided the Court and the Woods? Does he know that the Court did something to her (and if so, does he know what)?
TS: No, he knows nothing about her.Tom always had a habit of only answering parts of a question, or answering it in ambiguous ways, to avoid giving away plot points. That question is mostly about whether Coyote knew Jeanne personnally, with her tragic love story and all. All Tom said here, is that Coyote doesn't know anything about Jeanne (and we can see Loup doesn't name her, he just calls her "the ghost of the Annan Waters". So Coyote knew about the device, but not who was trapped by it or why). I think it's just deliberate misdirection from Tom here, because the question of Coyote knowing about the arrow was pretty central to that part of the story and he didn't want to give any spoilers.
