Those sorts of breast pockets tend to be sewn shut anyway, so the robot might as well have the same decoration as everyone else.
I'd like to know how a robot managed to distinguish itself enough from the the other robots to be added to this elite (apart from Shell) group of Court enforcers. Presumably it was programmed that way, but all the programming is passed down from Diego's robots... Maybe it was re-programmed, or its A.I. allowed it to learn new enforcement/recruiter skills.

or its A.I. allowed it to learn new enforcement/recruiter skills. Yeah--after all, Robot said that 'Annie gave him a choice' and he took it. The guard robot was contemplating learning to whistle. Sky Watcher said, after meeting Kat, that he was going to watch for Angels now. The robots may be guided by their programming, but I don't think they're limited by it.

Minuscule and ambiguous clue to be hyperextrapolated in Panel 1, unmentioned so far. Pretty disappointed in you guys. Ok, I picked up on it. Could be there is an older Hyland still around. Hmmm! Or, just that Aata knew him from when he *was* at the Court....

Even when Jack's in loads of trouble, he still has the good nature to use patronizing terms.

I agree, but it could also be read the opposite way, which is what I think the original poster was referring to as fodder for wild speculation!

So, what position does Jones have in the Court? Everyone her is deferring to her without question. She probably doesn't have a position my guess would be she still counts as a guest or invited person. Therefore one does not contradict the guest that the very top boss of the court has invited, as if she's get pissed and leave, then your boss will be very angry. Or shes a specialist brought in. So that could also be why she isn't questioned. No position in the court, but high position in the rest of the world. Also Happy 20th Snes! ;D

"If she says he can fly, he can fly" "aah ... of course"
I've been taking that as Jones reinforcing Annie but it just occurred to me that it could also be the way that people talk to someone who is delusional - "Oh, you mean the pink ostrich over there!" "aah ... of course".
Given Tom's ability to send us all off in the wrong direction several times in one story, I now don't know which he meant. Luckily there's only 12 hours or so until the next page. Maybe even more plot twists!
I'm much happier with the current stage of this story - I found the previous chapter quite linear and almost boring as a result. But it does make the current chapter much more interesting by contrast.

I don't think we're going to see this in "Gunnerkrigg Court", but it's a thought that ran through my head recently, and I had to share it:
When the Court officials confront Jack, he shouts "Hold it! When I was doing all that research on your computers, I also downloaded all the information! And I set up a system where, if anything happens to me, the information I downloaded goes straight to all the major news media! So if you don't want your secrets revealed to the world on the evening news, back off!"

So it seems the Court has robots who are competent and in working positions along with the ones who try to mimic humans. I was beginning to wonder why the community-wide embodiment of science and technology only seemed to have a few apparently sentient bots who weren't comic relief.

Maybe the reason the robot society seems so comically incompetent is because all the competent ones are employed by the Court instead.

By the way - the "Ahh, of course" is actually from the underling, the younger guy, not Aata. Aata doesn't seem so crude as to spout off like that. I get the feeling he might be really quite interesting - a sharp, cunning guy whose pleasant, cheerful disposition does a good job of covering the brilliant, strategic mind underneath. (It'd be far too easy to underestimate the plump, mostly smiling guy until he cleans the floor with you.) He also looks sufficiently amiable and harmless enough as to promptly elicit information from Annie to not have to work at it. Think about that a little. I noticed how he reacted when the younger guy went all "That's crazy!" to Annie. Instead of saying that as well, he got a thoughtful expression, as if Jack being able to fly actually made sense - to the point of fitting several puzzle pieces together. I also get the impression that he trusts Jones sufficiently that if Jones says Annie saw him fly, then the boy flies.

I always got the impression that Jones is intelligent and logical enough to be always right (unless she gains improper information without her knowledge, but she is intelligent and logical enough to know when this is happening in the event that it is possible for her to know. This is difficult for me to describe, alert me if I'm incomprehensible). The Court knows this and trusts her immensely.

So, what position does Jones have in the Court? Everyone her is deferring to her without question. She probably doesn't have a position She has an office right next to Eglamore's. She is at least partly a teacher. She is also very interested in assessing character. I think her current job at the Court includes being a psychologist. What I'm less sure of: is she there just as a typical school psychologist, or is she also an experimental psychologist?

Maybe the reason the robot society seems so comically incompetent is because all the competent ones are employed by the Court instead. There may be some truth in that (the Milton-quoting robot horse in Chapter Fifteen was apparently employed by the Court, and he's one of the more competent ones). On the other hand, we've seen inept robots employed by the Court before (such as the ones trying to block Surma, Anja, and Donald in "Ties"). Of course, the robots' comically incompetent nature may be less funny now that we know it apparently stems from the trauma of knowing their creator's dark secret.
