Both new shirt designs have been added to the store. Volume One is also there. I wonder if he gets money from books purchased through there.

I keep meaning to get the books and this reminded me, and I'd prefer to go through Topatoco rather than Amazon if that would mean Tom gets more of the money, but in that case I guess I need to know if Volume Two will be in stock any time soon.

Coyote on a t-shirt is more awesome than butter on toast.

Coyote on a t-shirt is more awesome than butter on toast. And that's saying something.

Joining in relatively late to sing the Coyote shirt's praises. Looking fiiiiiiiiine. Laser cow is awesome too, natch. As Tom suggested, please let us see what these look like when worn by actual fleshy humans.

Don't quote me on this, but I think he said that once volume 3 came out, there would be more of volume 2 available? I may have imagined that, though. D: Tom does get to see some of the money if you go through Topatoco, as Max stated above. Amazon and others, I believe he made no profit at all. But he was still happy when people purchased through other venues, he said it showed the publishers that people were interested.

Eh, I'm not too fond of the available shirts' motifs. None of them seem to me to be really very much "Gunnerkrigg" to me. I mean, a laser cow? Court symbol? Hello McFly, where are those to be seen except extremely few and far in between? Why not a proper Antimony, Katarina, or Reynardine shirt? But this is not a gripe I have with Gunnerkrigg Court apparel especially, it is not much different with other comics or games. Seemingly what the creators think makes a cool motif is not what I think is cool, and would buy (it's not the money, trust me, I have a proper job and could afford it - if the available things were to my liking. Which unfortunately they are not).

Why not a proper Antimony, Katarina, or Reynardine shirt? It is an approach chosen by many webcomic creators, and one that resonates well with a lot of readers: instead of making merch directly featuring the comic characters, they allow people wear something the comic character would wear him/herself, or actually does wear in the comic. I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing Annie on my chest. I'm quite happy with my Court symbol shirt )

Well, I dunno. Is it the characters that you as a reader love, are they what makes you keep coming back? I should think so. Some kind of symbol that does not really have much meaning even in the story itself? Nobody would miss it if it were gone.

I like the characters, but I don't want to wear them. I very much prefer to use something associated to the characters but that, at the same time, can stand on its own as an original design.
Take the Court symbol, for instance. I know many people that love it even when they don't know where it comes from.

Some kind of symbol that does not really have much meaning even in the story itself? Nobody would miss it if it were gone. It’s not the characters per se, it’s the combination of characters, plot, visual style and storytelling intonation that makes GC a unique phenomenon for me and keep me coming back. As a reader, I do have a personal attachment to the characters, and it’s exactly the reason why putting their images on a shirt strikes me as too straightforward. The Coyote shirt design is a good example of this: the image chosen for the shirt is not the “real-life” Coyote as we see him in the comic, but a character that illustrates his own speech — in other words, it’s Coyote as viewed by Coyote, and it is its iconic quality that makes it a good shirt design.

If you just stick a character on a shirt, then only people who are already fans--and who don't mind being seen in public in a cartoon girl t-shirt--will be interested in the shirt. If you make a design that can be appreciated without knowing its origin, then even non-fans will be interested.

Also, if the design pictures a more obscure element of the whole shebang, fans might like it for some in-joke appeal.
This is pure speculation, though.

I know it was just a joke, but replace the blinker stone with a fingerprint in this design and I'll buy it. Also, I may have bruised a rib trying not to laugh and wake my whole house up.

Earlier today there was a guy in my school's dining hall wearing the Laser Cow shirt, and it was magnificent. I tried to tell him how awesome it was, but my babbling became a little incomprehensible and I think he was somewhere between scared and confused, the poor little Freshie.
ED: So no picture, but know that laser cows exist somewhere in the wilds of Ohio!

Another problem with having specific characters on shirts is that the art of Gunnerkrigg Court keeps getting better and better, and so by next year Kat, Antimony, et al. will probably look pretty different both in art style and also their personal appearance, e.g. their hairstyles. Fro example Kat's haircut changes often (remember how important this was in Zimmingham during 'Spring Heeled'?), and six months ago we would have never seen Antimony's hair in a braid or tied up, whereas now it appears to be the default.
