I suspect he wants protection from whatever happens in Zimmingham. Remember that he saw Annie and Zimmy - which means he saw Annie defending Zimmy against the nobodies. As for Reynardine, who better to come along and defend/explain/understand than a nature-god of the ether?

I have a bad feeling about this and I'm starting to really wonder why he wanted Rey along for the ride. I wonder if the spider somehow can feed on the "purified" ether.
Maybe he's aware of the spider and wants to see how it interacts with others capable in the ether medium. He is after all aware of his abilities to some extent.

Wow... I hope this doesn't go where I suspect it's going.
I mean, if he already knew what the station was (a place to extract and purify ether), and if he knew he wouldn't need help to break in (and he hasn't, Annie has just made it slightly more convenient), and if he "knows all about" Reynardine (a being from the ether)... then why did he ask Annie to "bring the wolf"?
I could be very wrong here, but I suspect some ether's going to get "extracted" pretty soon... and it's going to be coming from a certain wolf :/

Collecting and purifying the Ether? So is Zimmingham what's left after they drained off the pure Ether from the, well, Ether?

then why did he ask Annie to "bring the wolf"? One guess might be that he wanted Reynardine along to protect him from any unwanted attention (e.g. Buddha). Heck, it's not impossible that's the only reason he brought them in the first place. He knows (or should be pretty sure) that Reynardine will go to some length to keep Antimony safe.

Tom mentioned on Formspring somewhere that Jack isn't aware of his etheric cargo - others are better at finding the actual link than I would be. That is a very good idea, and after rereading some bits of Annie's excursion to Zimmingham I think that question needs to be answered. I think we can postulate a few things about Zimmingham - we know that A) it's filled with malevolent sentient entities, B) those entities can attempt to possess people or somehow use them to leave Zimmingham, and C) some, but not all, of those entities can be good at hiding their nature. We can demonstrate that the not-Kat in Zimmingham was resistant to the rejection process that Annie had used on the others, likely because Annie wasn't actively trying to dismiss it like the others, possibly also because the entity was stronger than she was. We can postulate that the etheric spider came from Jack's trip into Zimmingham, although we cannot prove it however likely it seems. We can also postulate that upon taking possession of a host it begins to draw etheric energy from the host in order to survive and grow, which has a deleterous effect on the host. There are several things that we don't know, largely related to how exactly one can enter Zimmingham without Zimmy's assistance (although Jack may be solving that for us) and whether or not there is a minimum required etheric talent level that it takes to enter Zimmingham, and whether or not that makes a difference in the choice of the entity possessing a host. We also know that Zimmy's ability to enter Zimmingham was dramatically strengthened when she brought Annie and Jack into it; whether or not the power station had anything to do with that is unconfirmed. Given that list of evidence, we can conclude the following: Zimmy had entered Zimmingham before we are introduced to her. It is possible that she has a great deal of natural etheric talent. It is likely that a powerful entity used her to leave Zimmingham and continued to use her to grow, leading her to an advanced state of etheric deprivation that is evinced in its effects in her growth - red eyes, pointed teeth, etc. It is possible that the entity is still present on Zimmy now. We know that Jack had previously entered Zimmingham. It is likely that he saw some of Zimmingham's inhabitants and vice versa. It is likely that one of them approached him and was in contact with him upon his exiting Zimmingham, and has started to consume his available etheric potency now. It is possible that the power station will enhance his power and the Spider's along with it. It is also possible that it will do the same to Renard and Annie. Those are my thoughts. What are your thoughts?

This is NOT going to be a pleasant sensation for reynardine. I fully expect we'll see him doubled over in horrible pain in the next comic. Annie will also probably be affected.
Unless of course it only draws from the outside and is perfectly shielded on the inside. Which would be a sensible precaution but doesn't follow comic book rules of DRAMA!

NO, JACK, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Hmm, I see this page has increased our wild speculation wavelengths. Hooray for big red buttons. Oh Christ Jack, you just clicked on the big red button. When does that EVER end well? Somehow I don't think it's going to turn out quite like when this guy does it.

I remember a page where Zimmy was attacked by a spiderish monster that broke through the wall. So I am not so sure it's just a visual aid. In the Formspring site, Tom said that it was in fact a big old spider, and not just a visual aid. So it is in fact really there. and what the heck is Jack up to?! Yes, it's there, no doubt about that. But he didn't say it wasn't there for visual aid, he just said it was in fact a spider. And it's still no guarantee it's actually doing anything. It might be the source of this etheric disease of Jack, it might give him Zimmy-like features, but I doubt it's controlling him, and I don't see why everyone think that Boris is trying to feed of the etheric energy... It's sucking the energy out of the area and sending it into the sky, not sending it into the room where Jack and Boris are. Why would ..they? benefit from that? Jack is just very smart and very confused, so he's going slightly mad, something many people would be after seeing Zimmingham. He just want to see what happens when he does this, if it can reverse the effect, or maybe he can go there again to find out what the deal is. Maybe it's just to let Boris go home.

well, keep in mind that Buddha has to cross the lake to get to Jack.
Then again, they have to cross the lake to get back, so...
edit: I think it's safe to say that Annie was hit by a Smooth Criminal.

you know. since regular rain would have ether in it, while the power station rain doesn't cause it's all sucked out. that means that getting coated in ether is what makes zimmy feel better. so then, what happens if she get's hit by the ether bolt it shoots out? or better yet, if she goes into the forest?

As with any form of energy, while the small amounts you encounter in every day life are usually fine, the amounts and concentrations you see in industrial applications are almost always going to be dangerous. For example: being exposed to the output from an 80-watt lightbulb for an hour will be relatively harmless, but being exposed to the output from an 80-watt etching laser for an hour will cause serious injury. This plant is blasting out enough energy to ionize the gas between two stations dozens of kilometers apart and make something akin to artificial lightning. And this is presumably just a side effect of the energy transfer between the stations. I imagine getting hit by the full force of the beam would have results ranging from 'extra-crispy' to 'completely disintegrated', even for Zimmy.

japa: The face-washing/sleep-getting, he very probably has not done either, but the crusting, dripping goop around his eyes looks more like Zimmy's eye infection than it does just regular dirt/sleeplessness. wanderer: I dunno if Jack and Annie were exposed to much different. Ok, they might have been exposed to radically different areas of Birmingham, but somehow I don't think that was the whole of it. I highly doubt Annie would succumb to the same kind of paranoia that seems to be sticking to his brain. They both looked about the same when they left Birmingham, and Annie has recovered, while Jack has gotten worse. It's possible, though, that the spider could be doing something--it's certainly gotten bigger--I just think as a whole Annie is slightly stronger-willed than Jack is, if not somewhat purer, in a manner of speaking.

I thought it was interesting--when Annie and Jack left Zimmy's Birmingham, they both seemed to have little scribbles around their eyes. Word of Tom says that Annie's was just melty makeup. Jack's, though... it's unclear.

In Zimmingham, we see Annie's scar. If they go to Zimmingham again, I suspect we will see this spider.

Ecomono: Oh yeah, I'm totally aware of the makeup. I more meant this. Like, not the make-up you see dripping down her face IN Birmingham, but more the 'bruising' around the eyes afterwards. Basically it's like Jack's never went away, and just set in deeper. Here, shortly after she left Birmingham, Annie seems to be getting better(though it might just be artistic variance). Jack, on the other hand, seems to get worse. Btw, not saying Jack is evil--demonstrated by his care for the robot cows--just saying that I think Birmingham was far too much for him, and whatever it is that he saw is very slowly snapping him.

I think Jack and Annie were both just exhausted after their little adventure, the same way Annie was after her lesson with Coyote. Jack's "Zimmy eyes" have been getting worse, so it wouldn't make sense for them to appear right after his encounter. I am also concerned for Reynardine. I hope he comes out of this okay.
