On another note 'excellent' (see panel five) is a word rarely used by people who are not evil geniuses. Uh...

Is the lake still there? Wasn't it drained during the experiment?
It might be dry now.

Water fell from the sky. Also, it did not appear to drain completely (though it might).

You know, I think the real reason Jack wanted Annie to bring Reynardine is because, well, he has not actually placed a ladder on the other side of the wall. Clearly, he is actually going to simply jump down.

Clearly, he is actually going to simply jump down. The bridge really doesn't need any rope at all any more (until time to haul it back). Jack can untie the rope and use it (The bridge also doesn't need the concrete blocks, but they seem less useful for the purpose.)

I think that the real reason why the bridge, how it was built, and how stable it might be, is such a big topic of conversation here is because the events on this page - Annie meeting Jack - were something we knew was going to happen, and so weren't new to us. So the attention focuses on the minor details on the page. (The same thing happens a lot on those pages where the action just confirms what we already knew.) If some big new piece of information had appeared on that page, I don't think that the bridge would have received nearly as much attention.
