Have any other students than Kat called her "Annie" before? People seem less nervous talking to her than they used to.

That's a good point... I think most other students called her "Carver" up until now. That might be a sign of improvement for Annie's social standing. Possibly also related to the Residential incident, just as someone pointed out that Jack's general notoriety may have increased from that incident as well.

Good call on not reading the note in front of everyone, Annie. Way to keep 'em on their toes.

Mayhaps Shell has a girls coat as punishment for not being able to catch Jack. That coat just doesn't do his figure justice ;D

I love how the last three panels basically show the response in the forums.

Wow. Was not expecting Buddha to show up to defuse the situation. Gotta love his line though. "Go back to your educations" indeed. Anyhow, methinks that some of the ladies have taken a liking to what is apparently a new 'bad boy' Jack. Does seem like it. On the other hand, they might just be interested in the excitement generated by two monitors showing up after a half-crazed boy. Compare: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=602www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=624www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=694Seems more than a passing interest to me... I think that perhaps this girl, and likely the others, would call her Annie because, having shared dorms for almost two years, there's probably at least a little bit of familiarity, but to be honest I don't think a girl has directly addressed her at this point, aside from Kat of course, Zimmy, who used Carver, and Gamma, who used Annie. Aside from that, it was really just guys. Edit: Kat's parents.

With all the mystery layer, it's occured to me only now that monitors or whoever they are could be after Jack simply because of his breakneck sprint. And he ran so fast simply because he has little time to get where he knew Annie can be found. Maybe all the urgency is because of the message itself.

Calling people by their surnames fits the atmosphere of British boarding schools (at least, the way they're customarily presented; I never attended one so I don't know how much that's the case in real life. I attended a primary day school in England as a boy, but that's a different story).

I agree, Todd. And that, combined with the fact that Tom said no one really calls Annie "Annie" other than Kat, makes it notable that this girl calls her Annie, and not Carver or Antimony.
Of course it's a pastime for all of us to read into everything, hehe.

The girl is trying to appear extra friendly to better her chances of getting to know what the note said. So the first name basis may just be a result of that.

In the printed version it will be changed to "Carver" and everyone will go "Dang, what?"

I've just noticed that the Zimmy recruiters page is actually not the first page where we saw those buttons.

No shirt-pocket buttons, though.

And that style of buttoning isn't particularly rare, is it? Still, it was two years ago or so in comic-time that we saw those ones. Maybe the Court updated the design since then, or Tom updated the design since then.
ETA: Hey, Student McCutout said that nobody had seen Jack in ages. So, has he been: 1) lurking under your bed with his new arachnid friends 2) in lots of detentions for being a loony 3) sunbathing on a beach in Hawaii 4) under watch?
Though if he was under supervision and escaped they'd probably send somebody faster than Shell and less chill than Buddha after him, so I'll go with 'under your bed'. (Also if Buddha turns out to not actually be named Buddha I'm going to be really disappointed.)
I think the Shell/Jack resemblance is just because she has Jackish hair. She actually reminds me a bit of my sister, though...who is called Rachel...huh. (Maybe it's just how she was yelling and swearing.)

I like the girl in the antepenultimate panel. She seems very excited.

(Also if Buddha turns out to not actually be named Buddha I'm going to be really disappointed.) My money's on him being under supervision, if potentially poor ones. They might have underestimated the skills of a half-crazed kid who's been sneaking around the court since forever. In any case, it would certainly explain why he's on the run, why he'd drop a cryptic message to Annie, and where he's been. What I don't get is why Buddha tells Shell "good job." Jack just got away, what did she do that was so great? Did they want Jack to do that? But Shell looks too disappointed for that. Buddha must just be an unusually easygoing supervisor.

whelp, one thing's for certain: Jack be nimble, Jack be quick. Candlestick awaits in eager anticipation.
These new folks seem to be the finishing school types, perhaps from a completely different section of the court? It is rather large after all. The Durmstrang to the Court's Hogwarts mayhap.
edit: also, given this is the first school comic we've seen since residential, wherein Annie let her hair down and socialized, people are a bit more familiar with her. They certainly seemed a bit more warm by the end of residential.

Maybe someone else said this (I'm too lazy to check), but my own theory: Jack's been living like a renegade within the Court; Robin Hood without the "rob the rich, give to the poor", off the radar, living off the lan-er, industrial landscape, if you will.
