....well, I do understand better why the forest side was outraged over robots' incursions into their territory, if they were aware of this. Ohboy.

I think Kat is having some sort of horrific, endlessly regressive variation on her reaction to her father's tattoo: a tunnel of sad Kats imagining sad Kats, vanishing into the distance.

Am I the only person who thought their facial expressions looked kind of weird? I mean, add a couple of motion lines* to Annie and she could be giggling.
*I have no idea what these are actually called, extra lines parallel to the edge of an object to show that it is moving or vibrating

Giggling with those raised eyebrows and wide eyes with small pupils? That's some creepy giggling right there.

I feel like if they were to try and explain to the robots why Diego did what he did, the best and simplest way would be "Because he was angry and hurt..."
It'll be interesting to see Annie says in actuality (since she'll probably be speaking on behalf of Kat, who is clearly going to pieces over this)

Ok, I've never posted here before, but I'm curious how many of these pieces fit together. In www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=493 Coyote says "The court had done something to the flowing river, and nothing could cross". Could the magic arrow & Jeanne's sacrifice have been a method to block anything from crossing? The people in the room agree to the plan because they want to keep the animals from crossing the river. We know from multiple places that Young was the first guardian of the court, and that Diego hated him. That's why the cows don't clean his monument, and don't seem to like Egalmore. Could Jeanne have been in love with Young? That would explain why Diego hated him, but why would Diego call Young a traitor? Several points emphasize that Jeanne was waiting for something, for example 659 and 530. But what? Sorry if this has been said/answered before. EDIT: sorry I forgot this link www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=656Also implying that Jeanne's sacrifice was to prevent crossing the waters.

That would explain why Diego hated him, but why would Diego call Young a traitor? It seems likely that Jeanne's lover is a human who passed the Test, renouncing his humanity and becoming one of the forest folk. (Which would have Diego's “traitor” comment parallel Ysegngrin's declaration here.) Ysengrin seems like the clearest choice of the forest dwellers we know of, particularly given his winning personality. (It might of course be someone we've not yet met—indeed, it might be a minor enough plot point that we never will, though that seems a bit unlikely.) Young seems a poor candidate.

Why does everyone assume the test exists at this point? The people of the court were taken into the forest as they were without needing to be remade. I would say that the test wouldn't exist untill AFTER the bridge is made. Which probably wasn't for a whole generation after Jeanne was killed cause lets face it, they sacrificed a human being to fortify themselves they aren't going to negotiate for peace right away.
Also there's the question of when did the court become a school? Cause a bunch of refugees fleeing something so terrible that they need to take shelter in a magical forest probably aren't doing so with the intention of building a boarding school.
Don't let your knowledge of the way things are colour your perceptions of the way things were. The past can be drastically different.

I think the court is MORE than just a school, that function coming about since the goal of the court is pretty much scientific study (even of things etheric in nature). This naturally lends itself to making it a school, that and employees of the court having kids.

I think the girls better be careful in how they answer.

Cheers to Tom, for a brilliant chapter (though we haven't seen the end of it). This ( www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=643) was just brought to mind. Fantastic, bringing it to a full circle. The girls have a lot to learn about love yet.

Thing about intentions… (I mean, at some point, they've escaped whatever it is they were fleeing, and need to start thinking about what they're doing out there.)

Yes, though my current theory is that the test and the court becoming a school are directly related. Since we know that there's an entire house of etheric creatures who've become human. The question is then did the test cause the court to become a school or was it already becoming a school and this was happy coincidence?
