I say this is something for the Mythbusters to test!

I'm not an archery nerd, but I can contribute general nerdery!
The path of Janet's arrow is drawn as a straight line, but it should totally bend at the point where it hit Winsbury's arrow, in the direction that his arrow was going. Unless his arrow was really light or going really slow.
I don't really have a point to this, particularly since it looks better the way it's currently drawn. I guess my point was RANDOM PHYSICS!

Dear readers: This comic is a work of fiction.

Sorry.
(I didn't mean it as a criticism---not actual criticism, anyway. It was really more just "Hey, I can tot'ly apply my physics learnings yay!")

Tom has said in his "Questions to Tom" answers that the name "Gunnerkrigg Court" was (I'm paraphrasing) something he threw together to sound as unusual as possible. I'll dig up the quote if I have to. I believe this is the quote in question:

Oh now that IS interesting. It looks like at the same time he gave the source of the name, he also did in fact imply that the name was going to be worked into the story.
Iiiinteresting....

Yep, it did. And next we'll learn that the current headmaster (and thus Janet) is a direct descendant from said archer. That's about the only thing half predictable in GC. ;D ... a little unrealistic. Think about it: You're reading a comic about a girl who can see Psychopomps, with a games teacher who can jump half a mile high and a science teacher who is actually a magician. And you're calling something that's actually physically possible "a little unrealistic"? ;D Well, if she was taught few tricks by a valkyrie or something, issue will be dropped, of course. But a little more realistic than the bare-hands-and-cheek-sword-grabbing-thing. It was implied to be a consequence of lady Jones' little quirks. Whoever she is. Also, either girl has a ring, or it involves the same trick. Also, the kind of arrows used for target shooting shouldn't be sharp enough to pierce another arrow like that anyway. Dem balls do dat too, but dem no dat sharp, dem dat fast. an' her shot wus fasta. 'Cuz red wunz go fasta! 'nyway, Tekboy in me dinks dey got mean tenshun bolts on bows in dat Court o' Gunner Scrag. wat? dey got laser cows! Also, good tagline. i think they did it on purpose. they had a tie and this shot would have made one win, and what couple that is that hopelessly in love would actually want to win a contest against each other. Why not? Little show-off for sport just makes things more interesting. But now these two got a perfect cause to touch each other get a little quarrel sorry on public. I'm not an archery nerd, but I can contribute general nerdery! Dat's lootenant nerdery, tops. The path of Janet's arrow is drawn as a straight line, but it should totally bend at the point where it hit Winsbury's arrow, in the direction that his arrow was going. Unless his arrow was really light or going really slow. And her was really fast. As starburst98 told -- given the participants, this "incident" was obviously rigged.

I say this is something for the Mythbusters to test! They did test something similar, the robin hood split-an-arrow-with-another-arrow trick. mythbustersresults.com/episode51

Having read that link I am forced to concede that splitting like that is possible for fibreglass arrows (I said 'carbon fibre' earlier but that was WRONG), so the arrows in question are probably not wooden. GKC only has the best of everything. No medieval weaponry here (apart from swords).

Unless, of course, Egg didn't supply them with arrows and they had to whittle them all themselves =p

I just realized something. The Court trains kids with extra-normal abilities right? Okay, what other reasons can we give besides Janet's father being the Headmaster, that she is getting lessons at the Court? Any takers? Okay, now that I've got your attention, just apply that question's implications to the archery. And note that even Winsbury is pretty intelligent, even if he can be a jerk at times. There doesn't seem to be a single dim bulb among the Court kids.

No, that was Weiss, not Steadman.

I quite like the sky in this one, looks rather simulated, as if the Court was trying maybe to affect the weather with mixed results. And that was one heck of a shot! I mean, WOW. I haven't been this randomly stunned since Eglamore did that *SINGLE BOUND* jump.

There doesn't seem to be a single dim bulb among the Court kids. I refer thee to this thread. The poster speculated that it's just Queslett students who are trained to use their special abilities, and, seeing as everyone we've seen thus far in the chapter is from Queslett, it may well just be them that are 'gifted' so to speak. And remember, Red is in the Court still. Red who was going to cut her finger off under the impression that it'd grow back. That would be a dim bulb, if I may say so.

Yeah, but she has an excuse. She was a fairy first. I'm going to edit my comment about dim bulbs to refer to the mostly-humans and humans, from now on.

And note that even Winsbury is pretty intelligent, even if he can be a jerk at times. He was awfully happy with a D at the end of Year 7. There's definitely more to life than book smarts, which is good because Winsbury strikes me as lacking in that department.

I'd like to think that Annie will speak with Mrs. Donlan (or anyone else who might actually be of use, here) about Jack, but it seems unlikely.
I have to say, it seems almost a little relieving that Jack's behavior might not actually be his own fault. Not that it really means much, if nothing is done about it.

And there are plenty of kids at the school that haven't shown any sign of supernatural gifts.

I notice Kat's hair looks a lot more like her mother's in the morning. Maybe she brushes it straight...

goatmon, although not everyone has 'supernatural' abilites, I am pretty sure Jones stated that everyone at the school has a talent. Or at least, Annie told Kat she said that and theorised that Kat's special talent was her skills with robotics.
Maybe Janet's fancy shootin' is her talent.
