Oddly enough, lasers are often used to cool atoms down to fractions of a degree above absolute zero. It only really works on individual atoms or tiny clumps, though, and only then when they're already seriously cold. Not so effective on a log at combustion temperatures. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_cooling

I also speculated (on the comments page) that the cows' "lasers" on this page might be some sort of freeze-ray, because of the pale blue color.
Oddball theory (which might belong on the "Wild Speculation" thread, but it's relevant to this page): the Residential is the Court's way of ensuring that the toughest children will survive to ensure a continued physical hardihood among its residents. The children with poor constitutions will succumb to the cold night without fire; the stronger ones will survive. (Though I don't know if the faculty are really *that* cold-hearted.)

A blue ray that goes "Blaz"? Is this a reference or just a weird coincidence?

Robots should not be allowed to tell jokes. That's the lesson here.

maybe it's a hrser. That's a laser joke. Heat reduction through stimulated emission of radiation? Or did the joke just go way over my head.

Note the glow from the girls tent my guess is that is the blinker stone, already in effect I already addressed this earlier in the thread, but that glow seems to be coming from several tents, not just Kat's. Additionally, I think that Annie's choice about whether to recall her blinker stone and therefore cut off communication with Reynardine is a little more important than to just have it happen off-panel where we can't even see it. IMO. Good point about cutting off Rey...

So much for Eglamore cutting firewood a few comics back. Haha! I guess it's just another challenge for the students

Postscript to my earlier wild speculation: I thought about it further, and don't think that the Court would actually go to such drastic lengths as the speculation suggested. If students do freeze to death on the Residential, their parents are likely to complain to the Court, and might even threaten lawsuits - and the lawsuits could turn the attention of the outside world upon Gunnerkrigg. Imagine what else the investigation would turn up.
More likely, the hardships that the grown-ups are putting the children through are there just for laughs and we're not supposed to think about the real-life implications.

[bonneting a flat cap and a fugly plastic mask for a headband] Speakin' of dat blue colour, y'see, dat's the main' problem with 'em freezy-rays -- to ne'er let 'em condense much of oxy'en, espec'ly on sawdust an' other wooden stuff. Or around sparky stuff. Or 'nywhere near dat oil. May do some things. [ removin' dat cap] So much for Eglamore cutting firewood a few comics back. Haha! I guess it's just another challenge for the students They should warm themselves up via provoking those cows into noticeable overheating?

Haha! I guess it's just another challenge for the students They should warm themselves up via provoking those cows into noticeable overheating?[/quote] Oh my gosh! They're going to surround a cow, tear it apart, and consume its parts for warmth! They have become truly primal in the wild, 1.75 inch grass!

It makes sense that the cows aren't just there to keep the grass down. They stop things from burning up, I'm assuming they'd protect the kids if a plantalope attacked, and if any of the forest stuff goes out of order they're ready to deal with it.

I wonder if the challenge is to actually simply go up and ASK a cow whether or not it can start a fire for you?
By doing it without their permission, they shut it down. Maybe it's an exercise in diplomacy with beings that really aren't like you? Might at least explain the crappy weather and the timing here.
