A few things on my recent lurkings through the archives: It has been mentioned several times by different characters, that "there are no rats here". I may take this to literal, it's quite specific and rats are basically everywhere. Find/build a large enough place, ship some people there and there will be rats. Why not in the court? Further, both times the sentences was directed at Zimmy. As seen in the first link her definition of "spider" differs somewhat from the common one. Could be the same for "rats". On pg.779 in the lower half. I have no idea how I missed that, but Jeanne says "A fine strike, fille" (fille = french for girl), when Parley knocks the stone from her hand. She also seem oddly calm while saying that.

I figure if the wole province of Alberta can keep rats out then the Court can too.

So have the owls taken up the ecological niche that rats no longer fill?

So have the owls taken up the ecological niche that rats no longer fill? Nope, the pigeons (flying rats) have! A little known fact. Telsa, considered to be an extraordinary visionary of scientific genius, deeply loved a pigeon. When Kat is holding young City Face, she experiences a powerful flash of insight. Coincidence? Probably, but still fun to think about. Wonder if it means Kat finds human hair disgusting and will be screwed over by a businessman guising as an inventor? A pigeon businessman! CITY FACE!

Coincidence? Probably, but still fun to think about. Gunnerkrigg got a lot of hereditary talents, including Antimony as a descendant of... let's call them "Anselmus and Serpentina" for now. So... Kat comes from a long dynasty of mad scientists too? So have the owls taken up the ecological niche that rats no longer fill? Nope, the pigeons (flying rats) have! From this, we can infer that whatever factor proved to be more than just selection pressure for rats can be escaped by flying. So it's not because of TicTocs. Maybe... spiders?

*Headband of +5 straightness worn* *Successful will save; Kat is still attracted to Paz* Just imagine Zimmy wearing a pink headband with a flower! Ahahahahahahaha Also, I noticed this "Kat probably only has action figures she thinks are hot." gunnerkrigg.com/?p=96The question is... was it normal spiders or etheric Zimmingham spiders that caused rats to be replaced by pigeons?

I just noticed that it is explicitly stated twice that there are no rats in the court, once after Zimmy gets rained on for the first time, and once in Divine, when Kat says it to Zimmy.
I don't know why that would be significant, but it was apparently worth the panel space to mention it twice.

And Paz was so disappointed when she realized the cows in Young's Park were robotic. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=602The only mice seen to date were for experimentation. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=752But there are birds and spiders, plenty of spiders. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=746 www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=198And we saw a spider catch a fly, so flies too. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=332I assume that most animals were purged from the Court along with the trees and anything else that the forest people might control. I suppose the Court couldn't keep the birds completely out or completely exterminate the insects.

I always thought Gamma's remark was important, but completely missed Kat repeating it. Well that's what this thread is for.

It's a wonderfully ominous, if vaguely defined, detail that I hope to see refined later on.

this is a female: this is a male: Kinda ninja'd by Jim North, by the way Those are huge mice (compared to the hand that is holding them)! that's because they are rats (i couldn't find a good photo with mice ), but the same rule applies to all the small rodents (mice, rats, hamsters...)

I used to have a male mouse as a pet, and I can vouch for the fact that even though they're smaller overall than rats, proportionately everything in that photo is exactly the same.

Shadow 2 startles a spider (complete with a tiny speech bubble containing only an exclamation mark) when communicating for the first time with Annie. What makes this more interesting is the fact, that spiders seem to be the only regular (not test subject) animals we have ever seen or heard of in the Court (although there must be something the spiders eat). It occasionally popped up in dialogue as well. There are no rats in the Court, only plenty of spiders.

You're right fish, I forgot about all of these.
Still the thing with the rats gives off some strange vibe.

I went on an archive binge for this thread. I made the following discovery: Shadow 2 startles a spider (complete with a tiny speech bubble containing only an exclamation mark) when communicating for the first time with Annie. Which happens to the best of us, don't get me wrong.

I thought I had looked through my own posts to make sure. Apparently you are better at finding my own posts than I am!
