I believe, at the time (pre Sky Watcher & Coward Heart), it was "waiting." We still don't know the full extent of it. We pretty much understand all of the rest of the words, except for "powerless," kinda. But seeing the direction and angle the story's taken this far, I'm pretty dang sure it's "waiting." forgive me for asking, but would it not just be the fact that one word obn the page is bolded?

This is what I thought. "You" is bolded, so you'd expect it to be the most important word.

Tom is probably messing with us on that one; you're probably not supposed to overthink his comment, so of course, we do. I wasn't going to include it in the new thread anyway. It's probably never going to be answered, and it's not really important.

Haha, I was just putting a couple of specific examples down for Divine. It's true though, the entire chapter needs to be there really. I keep wondering about what the heck was going on in Divine. It's the most confusing chapter to me and I was worried that I missed some important interpretation within the forums, particularly about what's happening between Annie and her father and why she even wound up in the hospital unconscious. Is there anywhere in the forums in which people have come to a reasonable explanation about what was going on, or is it all pretty speculative at this point? Reading this thread makes me think that everyone else is as confused as I was, which is honestly kinda reassuring.

I was confused myself while reading it, but after going through it a couple more times I managed to piece it together, I think. Good ol' Tony was doing something etheric to the fire spirit within Annie, perhaps trying to excise it completely or drain it away or alter it so it doesn't pass on to Annie's future child or whatever, it's not actually explained yet. But he was doing something, and it caused Annie to collapse and go into a coma. Zimmy senses this disturbance, knows that Annie needs help, and knows that she's probably the only one at the Court who might be able to do something, but she doesn't want to go because she's scared of seeing Kat, who she knows will undoubtedly be by Annie's side. So that's the point where the chapter starts, with Zimmy trying to run and hide so she won't have to help. The red mark that she pulls off her face corresponds with the cut on Annie's etheric form, denoting her attempt to cast off responsibility. Gamma catches up with her, however, and makes her go. The bird sitting on Kat's head represents Kat's thoughts. It speaks her mind so Zimmy and Gamma can hear what she's thinking, and it shows Kat's connection with birds (her boyfriend who turned into a bird, City Face, and possibly the fact that she likes birds (read: girls)). On that last bit, Zimmy points out Kat's possible desire to remind folks that she's a girl, referencing the events of Faraway Morning where Paz and Kat have their little misunderstanding about who is hitting on whom. So Zimmy apparently freezes everyone in the room except herself, Gamma, and Kat so she can have some relative peace and quiet while she works. Gamma leaves and Zimmy starts looking into Annie's thoughts/dreams. The ring of teeth on Annie's wrist obviously signify Coyote's binding that kept Annie from mentioning the tooth he gave her. The green dude is Kamlen, a fellah she met out in the forest. Their escapades are expounded upon in the Annie in the Forest book. Zimmy sees a spider in the forest, and more spiders appear later on. These are the whitelegs, the nasty little buggers that hang out in Zimmy's mind, the ones that tried to take over Jack to get out into the real world. The bit with naked Jones I'm not 100% sure about, unless it's pretty straightforward and Annie really does have a thing for Jones. It could just signify her desire to know more about who and what Jones is. The mask would seem to represent the way Annie tends to hide her feelings. She takes it off during the memory of her and Kat eating berries under the tree because it's one of the few times she's actually let her guard completely down. Jones is shown handing her the mask, which may show that she identifies with Jones' stoicism. It might should be pointed out that this chapter came before Annie learned the reason behind that stoicism. Anywho, the mask also seems to cover up other things she wishes to keep hidden, such as the way she's been copying Kat's homework. When Zimmy tries to keep the mask away from Annie, Annie fights back but weakly. Zimmy delves deeper into Annie to find that the reason she's weak is because of whatever it is Tony is doing to the fire spirit part of her. Zimmy follows the etheric link back to Tony and gives him a swift eviction out of Annie, but puts herself in a vulnerable state by doing so. Annie - quite likely because she defends her dad even as she resents him at the same time - uses this moment of vulnerability to attack Zimmy using her memories of Jack. When Zimmy calls Tony a jerk, it breaks Annie's stoic facade. With new-found strength stemming from the removal of Tony's bone lasers and her anger at the insult, Annie chucks Zimmy out of her mind violently enough to cause a real-world reaction. This seems to shock Zimmy so hard that she can't stay brave when faced with how she sees Kat again. Given the metallic look of the image, it seems likely that this appearance signifies her affinity with machines, robots in particular. It looks like she has wings, so it may even be a representation of the way she appears in the minds of the robots, a metal angel. Gamma taking away Kat's headband and Zimmy's last words to her once again references the whole Kat/Paz thing, a way of explaining why they came to help as well as serving as a lesson to Kat about being afraid of her own feelings. Aaaaaaand I think that's pretty much it. Did I leave anything out?

I agree with everything Jim North just said.
I'm also kind of surprised that the "Tony Tampering" theory seems the most likely interpretation now. I said the "etheric bone laser" thing as a joke, but it seems that was a literal occurrence, and not just a metaphor for Antimony's preoccupation with her father.

Haha, I just reread the chapter, and I don't think you left anything out! That was the part in particular I was wondering about. This theory makes sense in light of the previous chapter (Tony needed medical supplies in order to operate on his daughter) and the seeming attack on her fire elemental. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1040The bit with naked Jones I'm not 100% sure about, unless it's pretty straightforward and Annie really does have a thing for Jones. It could just signify her desire to know more about who and what Jones is. I think at the time, I just thought that part was Zimmy acting deranged and messing with Kat and Annie, but if she's truly just reacting to and interacting with Annie's own images without creating any of her own (except for the spiders that follow her), it makes sense that it would be symbolic of something Annie feels towards Jones (curiosity or connection).

I said the "etheric bone laser" thing as a joke, but it seems that was a literal occurrence, and not just a metaphor for Antimony's preoccupation with her father. That's funny that it started that way. It does tie together the previous chapter and Divine well along with what we know of Tony. We know he was trying to hard to find a cure for Surma, it makes sense that he would continue his work on the cure for Antimony, even if his feelings for her are so complicated as he also seems to resent her for Surma's death. And it connects with Annie's pleasant memory of her father doing healing work on her in the Microsat 5 chapter. Though it was probably just prompted by the medical supplies, I like to think the memory foreshadows him trying to heal her in Divine. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1018

I gave up on Divine because it was too much going on and I couldn't keep up. I think you won the internet.

The only drug Coyote gets high on is Charlie Sheen. It's some concentrated shit he gets from his old buddy back in the Americas, Jesus Malevarde. Not for mortal consumption.

Man, remember that time Coyote drank a whole glass of soy sauce and thought he could fly the forest? "Whoohooo! Clear the launchway, man. We're takin' this baby TO THE MOOOOOOON!"
