Buh... WHA?Okay, clearly the position of dragon slayer/knight/whatever-title-it-is comes attached to the games teacher position (games=gym=PE). And this isn't Sivo, by the looks of those tattoos. But the most shocking to me is: (page spoiler) IT'S THE END OF THE CHAPTER ALREADY?!(end spoiler) I'm very sad. Will our questions about young Anthony ever be answered?

That was an unexpectedly quick ending.
Also Sivo, doesn't have those markings.

definitly not Sivo. Sivo has only two horns and no tatoos. also, looking back at Sivo's drawings, it seems like his wings were not functioning -the horns on them look shriveled and we don't see them open (they probably had to paralize the wings to stop eynardine from flying. sad.)
I wonder if the horns are related to age (more horns=older Rogat Ojark).
anyways, beautiful chapter. Thank you Tom.

Guys, Tom says it isn't Sivo on the comic's main page, so you can stop thinking over the hows and whys of why it can't be him.
Also, I don't think it's official that the games teacher is always a dragonslayer. The only two we have to go by is James and Thorn.

I didn't add the "No, it's not Sivo" text until the page had been up for a while, so some people might not have seen it. No worries.

I don't think it's official that the games teacher is always a dragonslayer. The only two we have to go by is James and Thorn. As “dragons don’t need slaying so much these days”, being a dragon slayer won’t be a full-time job; his duties seem to be partly ceremonial anyway. The qualifications required for a games teacher and a dragon slayer probably overlap a great deal, so it would be just natural for one guy to fill both positions.

If someone qualifies to be a potential dragonslayer, they're probably more than qualified for gym class, but an instructor that qualifies for gym is probably not default dragonslayer material.

I wonder if Dragon Slayers have one of those "seek out an X and have them help you train" type things going on (where in this case X is a Rogat Ojark) or its just that both Beardy and Eglamore happened to befriend one each...

Who knows, maybe Sivo is the son of Thorn's Rogat Orjak friend. It could happen.
Definitely a short chapter, but I guess that's all that needed to be said about the past at the moment. Just think - in a such a short space of time Tom's given us so many questions to ponder, all of which have implications for the present day story. I think we just saw a chapter that was secretly one of the most important.
Just think, next week we'll get to see the start of a whole new chapter. Will it be in the present day? Will it be closer to the present day but still in the past? Will it be even further back in the past? Will Tom do a 'Lost' and set a chapter in the future?! Only time will tell.

A flash-forward would be pretty awesome. At first I was shocked that this was the chapter ending, I thought this one was going to be really long, but then I realized that its entirely possible that the next chapter could still be set in the past. Also, that Rogat Orjak is amazing! I love that Thorn is such a badass that he just stands on it, not even needing a saddle.

I didn't add the "No, it's not Sivo" text until the page had been up for a while, so some people might not have seen it. No worries. Is there any particular reason why it couldn't be Sivo? I mean on your end of things, is there any reason to have ANOTHER Rogat Orjak in the background of the court? Is it really important that you create yet another character to hold a position that could be handled by an already existing character? I mean, aside from being able to stop all the overanalysists from going "gosh golly, it's Sivo this confirms my theory about how the Court is really The Matrix except with magic and the moon is made of whipped cream and all the humans are really gerbils in disguise." I mean, if you really wanted to stop people from theorizing, you'd make the plot more transparent so people could actually figure out what's going on rather than having to guess all the time. ...Er... I mean that in the nicest way possible, of course.

Well I for one am certain that the moon is made of whipped cream. How else could Coyote take it out of the sky? It's simple; he didn't. He just ate it and made a new one later.

"For centuries, people thought the moon was made of green cheese. Then the astronauts found that the moon is really a big hard rock. That’s what happens to cheese when you leave it out." More here.ETA: I'm impressed by DogWood 1's speed on three legs. At my school one of the groundskeepers had a three-legged dog (named "Tripod"), and although he could get around reasonably well he couldn't exactly run.

It must be incredibly hard to be a dragon without opposable thumbs.

Thanks for the heads up re: Rogat Orjak not being Sivo. I must say, this was a delightful chapter, and I'd really like to see more in its vein. There are so many unanswered questions about the previous generation, and telling things from their perspective was very illuminating. Here's to the next chapter!

I think I still like Coyote Stories and Power Station best, but this was an incredible, inspired chapter. Definitely loving how the artwork has evolved.

Someone said that for every mystery Tom solves, he opens three more. Let's see how we are doing: Solved: Created: - Why a Valkyrie has been sent to Gunnerkrigg Court.
- What the dogtrees and the shadow people were doing in the Court in the first place.
- What the extent of the kids power's is.
I feel like I am missing something.

Ooh, more createds: - What, if anything, went on between Surma/Jones.
- What Jones was like at this point in time.
- What matters Tony has to attend to.
- The nature/origin of the dogtrees.
I bet we're going to have a million questions by the end of this. edit because I lose at formatting.

My ridiculous theory is that the dog tree(s) is transporting the shadow people to the forest from...somewhere else. Like a dog shaped wooden taxi of sorts. I mean, the shadow people can't cross the bridge owing to the lights, and there is no better place to hide and protect them than in the shadows of the trees on the dog's back. This of course raises the question of where the shadow people were in the first place.

Why a Valkyrie has been sent to Gunnerkrigg Court. This one was actually answered – it was some sort of punishment for not following Odin’s orders.

And Brinnie turned out to have a far smaller role than all that speculation we had about her might suggest. (Perhaps we should have paid more attention to the fact that Annie and Kat didn't even comment on her or ask about her when examining the photograph back in Chapter Seven. It might have been a sign that she wasn't that important to the story.)

And Brinnie turned out to have a far smaller role than all that speculation we had about her might suggest. Too early to tell … How much time has passed between page 538 and 559 – about one hour? There is so much we haven’t seen, some of which will surely turn out to be quite important. But time will tell.

I know, but why did she specifically come to Gunnerkrigg Court? The obvious answer is that it is a pretty good place for a minor deity, but I would like to hear more details.

I still suspect that the real purpose of Brinnie in the webcomic was to provide symmetry for the photograph, so that there'd be an equal number of boys and girls in it.
