Is the tree-dog, effectively, a mechanical thing from the Forest? I've been thinking along that line myself, and not just for the DogWoods and Robot's new arm. There's Ysengrin's tree-suit, and I thought there was another thing too but a quick flip through the comic didn't remind me of anything so maybe there isn't. Only three?

@ Casey: I don't have the link handy at the moment, but I'm almost certain that Tom said the Glass-Eyed Men have children via sexual reproduction. Thanks, I'll pass that along to Ulysses who was the one who brought it up. ;D

The revelation that there are shadow-men in the trees opens up three possibilities that I can see: 3) The shadow-men are the tree-dog's "drivers" and they came with it and are trying to leave with it, being on some unknown mission for the Forest Teenage shadowmen out for a joyride? ;D

...Shadow2...'s been described as a child, while if he was stranded in this story, he'd have been stuck in the Court for a generation a-HA!: Shadow 2 had been stuck here for quite some time.So that's cleared that up. (Because we all know how long "quite some time" is.)

I'd speculated that Shadow2 changed his mind about living in Gillitie Wood after discovering the changes in it, changes reflecting Ysengrin's increasing descent into madness.
As I mentioned elsewhere, Shadow2's decision to return to the Court is probably one of the saddest moments of irony in the story. To help him return home, Annie sends Robot across the bridge, resulting in Robot's possession by one of the shadow-men, the battle at the bridge, the possessing shadow-man's death, Annie falling off the bridge and having misadventures of her own in Gillitie Wood before being rescued by Kat, Robot being melted down into paper-clips and his CPU held by the robots before Annie rescued him, a Tic-Toc bird dying (if robots can die), and worsening relations between the Court and the Wood. And then Shadow2 decides to live in the Court. All that trouble, and it was for nothing.
(Or maybe not. Perhaps Shadow2 needed to return to the Wood to discover that he didn't want to live there any more. And maybe all those troubles were necessary as part of a process to heal the frictions between Gunnerkrigg and Gillitie. At the end of Chapter Twelve, when Annie discovers all the damage she'd unwittingly caused and apologizes to Robot, he tells her that what matters most is that she gave him a choice.)

I got the impression dogtree was, for reasons unknown, aiming at the kids just because that thing looks like it's drooling bark over Donny's head there. Creepy.
Judging by your evidence there, I, uh, think you mean Forest. Just saying.
But I bet Shadow2's been trying to get back to the Forest all along, since he arrived (presumably off one of these dogtrees). Perhaps he's been shadowing people ever since, just hoping they'll notice him, and talk to him... That's pretty sad, really. I wonder if Annie's the first one to ever try and help him in all these years. Or I guess he could've been hiding out all this time, waiting for exactly the right person (ie medium?) to return him.
Also, I knew there was a good reason I loved Anja! She looks very mature in panel 2.

But, but... they're one molecule thick! How on earth would that work? Actually, no one answer that... Also, I was just flicking backwards through the archive a bit, and apparently the fact that Kat's hair was getting long and curly had completely passed me by. It looks particularly long in panel 3 here. She'll look like Anja! *Squee*

The bubble-shield power that Anja uses on this page reminds me of Violet's superpower from The Incredibles. Come to think of it, the two characters share a lot in common.

I honestly don't think Shadow 2 came off one of the dogs, there would of been some sort of hint in chapter 1.

Judging by your evidence there, I, uh, think you mean Forest. Just saying. No, I meant "Court". That was my point: after all the trouble that Annie unwittingly caused trying to get him home, he decides that he doesn't want to stay in the forest after all, and goes back to Gunnerkrigg with her, thus meaning that she sent Robot across that bridge for nothing. It wouldn't have seemed so futile if he'd stayed in the forest once he got back.

From that perspective, Annie’s whole efforts appear futile. On the other hand, as early as in the very first chapter Annie had set off a chain of events that eventually led to her meeting Jeanne, instigating Kat’s interest in building a robot (which indirectly resulted in the discovery of S1 and its activation using robot’s CPU etc.), and provoking an incident that, after years of silence, resulted in re-establishing relations with Gillitie Forest with Annie as the new medium. Within the context of the plot, it wasn’t futile at all. (One could also argue that Reynardine’s attempts to escape in Chapter 3 were ultimately futile, in that at first he doesn’t get very far within Sivo’s body and then gets trapped in a plush toy under the command of a little girl. Still, this move turned out to be a key development within the story.)

I think Shadow2 returned to the Court because he missed Annie and wanted to be near her. C'mon, even Coyote likes Annie enough to invite her to the Forest, so why wouldn't a Shadowboy get attached to her and her nice friends.

Here is a thought. Perhaps two shadowpeople—one female and one male—were left behind. Eventually, not long before the start of the story, they had a child, Shadow 2. Since Shadow 2 had grown up in the Court, it was more home to him than the forest, so he decided to come back after delivering some message to the forest.

Violet was just in her awkward teen years. Considering how good-looking both her parents were, she'll be a babe, too, just give her a few years. Though I see how her voice could be a bit of a turn-off. And to get things back on track, here is where Tom talks about Shadowman reproduction.

Perhaps it was not Shadow 2 that got stuck in the Court, but his parents? (Or parent - maybe they breed by mitosis). He would have been born (budded? ) in the Court and grown up there. At the start of the story he wants to get back to the Forest because that's where he came from, but once he got there he realised that he didn't belong there, he belonged in the Court. The Court was his true home all along! That's why he decided to come back with Annie. On the topic of Violet: give her a chance, she's like 15. Maybe they'll do an Incredible 2, then we'll see who's a babe. (The answer is Mirage )

Shadow2 being an offspring borne in the court would make a lot of sense. I suppose all the other shadow children in the forest didn't let him join in on their little... shadow... games... <,<

Probably because his nose glowed so bright. Luckily, Coyote let him guide his sleigh one foggy Christmas Eve because he'd been juggling his eyes and lost them, so he couldn't see where he was driving. After that all the other Shadows mostly accepted him, all except one who vowed to get revenge on Shadow2, thus making way for a really crappy couple of Christmas specials about Shadow2's son made out of plasticine!!
Ahem, sorry. Got a bit caught up there.

I'd like to thank the Academy... For those of you who have no idea what I'm blathering about, I was referencing this travesty. What's wrong with the original story of Rudolph? It's a classic! Leave it alone! You can tell the calibre of these by the voice talent of the main character: Ben Stiller in the US, Ardal O'Hanlan in the UK. Aaaaaand back to the comic. Does anyone else reckon you could fit that frame of Anja with her hands up into an episode of Dragonball Z and no one would notice? "Kamehameha!" *SPANG*

Why don't we have Official Boxbot Awards for Terribleness? All we need is a cardboard box and the person's mail address.
