Hmm... somehow Mr. Thorn knew about the not-involved monsters before the alarm went off. (That's why he was unwrapping his armor, I would say.) Perhaps he saw them out the window. Normal protocol, though, would be to set off an alarm first, THEN go for the armor.

It had to be asked:
How does that robot type with boxing gloves on?

Rubbish. Wheres the fun in that!
You can already have the armor on and be ready, then the alarm goes off, everyone else whose there to fight rushes in and see's you in your early pre-event awesomeness like you already knew before hand by some value of your own state as being an avatar of greatness that this was gonna happen.
that assuming Mr thorn knew. maybe he did, but not in a way we know of yet. never the less. This is an interesting turn of events.
Oh and that robot has earned his arms for a good reason.

Oh and that robot has earned his arms for a good reason. It's much easier to flail your arms in panic, if you have arms.

Panel 6 makes me believe that some of the Court's robots are constructed based on Artificial Stupidity instead of Artificial Intelligence....

Panel 6 makes me believe that some of the Court's robots are constructed based on Artificial Stupidity instead of Artificial Intelligence.... Chapter Twelve led me to a similar conclusion. Indeed, the only robot (among those who look like robots - as opposed to those who appear like living beings such as the Tic-Toc birds) I've seen at the Court who seems sane to me is the Milton-quoting robot horse. (As I said before, if Jones really is a robot, she must have been programmed by someone other than whoever programmed the regular robots at the Court.)

You need arms if you have to push students away... and possibly box gloves too

I'd love to see what these robots get around to when the humans aren't around. Maybe these model B's have poker matches with those incredibly inept guard bots from administration.

Hrm. I must say I'm surprised that the Rogat Orjak will indeed be in this chapter. Well, I'm sure it'll be cool.
Now, Monday, Surma/Donny/Anja better whip around and investigate, or I don't know what's what anymore! From where else would Antimony and Kat have inherited their love of adventure?

Ah, so could this be where the gang meets Sivo for the first time? I hope so. I'm very interested in Sivo and hope to learn more about him posthumously, much like Surma.

Elite Security...kinda reminds me of these guys. Perhaps these are the parents of those robots.

The robots can be 'flawed' to that degree because they have an etheric design that lacks the 'precision' of modern science.
Personally I think it would be more amazing to create a robot that operates like a bumbling human.

I think the unsung hero of this page is the face in the lower right-hand corner.
Why are you so sad, sad-face? Are you afraid of the large monster or two, which are surely not involved in the present situation?

Anyone else recognize the symbol on the robot's boxing glove? I don't remeber what it means myself, but I do know I've seen it before.
Also, I've got the feeling that the reason there is a monster alarm in the first place is that this director maybe wants Jame to meet Sivo face to face for the first time because he knows that James might be ''destined'' to become a dragon slayer and doesn't want any interference from other students while he is doing this, thus sending the robots to redirect the students away from that meeting spot.
Although I still think Surma, Donny and Anja will find out about everything during this chapter.

And let me congratulate whoever set up the gunnerkrigg wiki on being rank 2 on Google results for "alchemy bismuth".

Anyone else recognize the symbol on the robot's boxing glove? Bismuth. See comic #372. It is seen in many places around Gunnerkrigg Court.

Geez, you'd think robots built by a place endeavoring to become God would work a liiittle better...
But that would take all the fun out of life!

I like the comment from Tacroy in the comments section of the page:
"So.... if a robot says "Man, shut up!" is that like a human saying, "God, shut up!"? "

Clementine, I think you have missed the point of that particular line...
I'll think of something constructive to say in the morning. Or possibly on monday, because exams are starting and my most study-intensive one is on that day.

Ah. My apologies for being ambiguous. I should've quoted.
I meant Coyote's line about the Court being Man's endeavor to become God - it seems to me that it should be taken in a different manner. The symbol "god" can be understood as "omnipotent and/or perfect," among other things, but I think a better symbol-association is "master of one's own fate; in control of what happens around oneself." This is about the opposing world-views that Court and Forest people have; people on the side of Nature are portrayed (not only in GC, of course) as accepting and working with the world around them, whereas those on the side of Technology/Science are portrayed as trying to enforce their will on the world about them.
So basically, what i said was really not important at all. You made a joke by (as I saw it) bending a symbol a little, and then said what I thought you did wrong without saying what I thought was right (the edit was the last two lines).
and finally, about the name, thanks =) I like this name, as it combines music, books, and story-telling.

Hmm, an idea which is reinforced in Coyote Stories on page 491 when Coyote says he came to the forest only to find the humans trying to tame the powerful forest creatures. The mythos of nature-good vs technology-bad is so prevalent in our culture... and yet it seems so few people live their daily lives with the same conviction. I find that to be curious.

Oh! I see. I did intend the "omnipotent/perfect" sense to make a joke, but in actual use I much prefer your interpretation. And don't say it wasn't important, you got to explain the whole Court/Forest conflict! If that's not important this whole forum is very, very misguided .

Let's have a scavenger hunt! Who can find the the alchemy symbol for Bismuth in all it's hiding places around Gunnerkrigg Court?! I found one here www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=84 on the plaque Kat gets for winning the science fair. Who can find another of Bismuth's hiding place?
