Does anyone have a translation for the Greek that appeared over Zimmy and Gamma's heads in the library in comic [73]? Transliterated I think it is "kindynos entomo".
Is the "kindynos" a reference to the movie Posohi Kindynos? I hope not since it is supposed to be a terrifying movie about abuse. But that's all google finds.
... sort of like how Kat's t-shirt "Dwr Budr" was a reference to the song by Orbital, whose name was also on a poster on her wall. That reference didn't seem related to the story, except Tom may have been listening and liking...
"Entomo" could apply to Zimmy: entomo-, entom- (Greek: insect, bug; literally, "cut up, cut in pieces"; an insect because it appears to be segmented)... Zimmy seems to have a "familiarity" with bugs... and cut up bugs... and spliced giant bugs.
Also-n-stuff, did anyone notice that the library alcove where G&Z were found [in 73] had what appeared to be an open skylight? Does Zimmy need access to the outside weather for some reason? Like now in [195]...

Hmm...that last part would make sense since they'd have to close the skylight for the storm.
Also, on [121], the words at the top mean "Pray[,] Read[,] Read Again[,] and You Shall Find" according to my source (IE the first result on Google), if anyone was wondering and/or too lazy to find out.

I'll take a shot at answering my own question.
The movie Prosochi Kindinos is also known as Attention Danger. Greek signs saying Kindinos mean Danger.
Thus Kindinos Entomo could mean Danger: Bugs! ...which would apply nicely to Zimmy. Or un-nicely...
It was a pain to figure out because the movie swamps all google results and my transliteration (kindynos) doesn't translate.

Incidentally, Dwr Budr means Filthy Water in Welsh, but I don't think it's relevant to the storyline. Kat just likes Orbital.

[65] Chapter 4, Page 6: Panel 4: ¿pero, donde está la puerta? <But, where is the door?> Panel 7: ¡je je! un globo. <He he! A balloon.>
[66] Chapter 4, Page 7: Panel 2: ¿qué? <What?> Panel 3: ¿hola? hello? <*hello*? hello?> Panel 6: uy... qué asco. <ugh... disgusting.>
[67] Chapter 4, Page 8: Panel 5: qué ojos tan lindos tienes... Paz. <What beautiful eyes you have... Paz*> Panel 6: ¿me los darás? <Will you give me them?>
*Actually, "paz" means "peace". But in this case Paz is the girl's name.

Thanks for the translations. I was planning on putting them into the comic, a la Megatokyo fans, but only if I can get Tom's approval.

Personally I don't think it is necessary to have translated versions of pages. However I won't stop you.

I kind of like the challenge of trying to figure out the translations... That being said, it's nice to be able to check and see "did I get it right?"

[61] Chapter 4, Page 2: Panel 4 (in the wall): Dulce et dec... <Sweet and fit...> (Probably "Dulce et decorum est", meaning "Sweet and fitting it is")

[61] Chapter 4, Page 2: Panel 4 (in the wall): Dulce et dec... <Sweet and fit...> (Probably "Dulce et decorum est", meaning "Sweet and fitting it is") The full quote would normally be Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori "It is sweet and fitting to die for one's country"

My guess would be Slovenian like it says in Tom's comment for that page. D:

We have...some very, very intelligent people here.
I also think that like in Megatokyo (not sure if any of you don't read htat...XD), Tom uses artistic licence with the languages... but I love that we have members who can translate...*win*

Well, don't I feel stupid for never having checked the MT forums for Kimiko's translations. Guess I'm in bad company. ^_^;
But while I'm here, I'll also throw in my appreciation for the numerous translators we have who are willing to offer their insight.

Myrani, I'm with you on that. I never thought to look for translations. *Scary Megatokyo Forums* On the other hand, Megatokyo uses the language just like GC. It is translated selectively for artistic effect. If characters are just talking in Japanese, then it is usually translated, but sometimes it is not, like in a recent strip when Piro and Kimiko are talking Japanese in front of Largo. It is a neat trick, pulled off well by both Tom and Piro.

That last one with Kimiko telling Largo to go visit Erika was actually 'officially' translated in the MT forums by pixiebell, who put Fred's english into japanese in the first place. So... That one, at least, you really should go check out.

157Annie is saying her name in ancient Egyptian. That is so cute!

That would be 'Coptic', since almost no-one seems to know the actual name of the language.

Nah, Coptic is the modern variant of Egyptian written in (mostly) Greek letters. It is the closest analogy in a modern language, but as different as Italian and Latin.

Well, really I suppose she's saying it 'written' in Hieroglyphs, as when you pronounce those signs you get 'Annie' anyway. She's not really speaking ancient Egyptian or Coptic.

So what does Dobranoc mean? It's in the title for the current chapter.

According to those who know Polish, it means "Good night" (which ties in with the fact that Gamma finally gets some sleep in).

...yeah Aspen, I saw your post about their left hands being in "spell casting position" on their lips. But no one has any coherent theory about what their right hands are signifying. I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm right. I'm just pointing out another way of looking at this. Tom has an affinity for foreign languages. ASL is a foreign language. And if you look at the wiki alphabet chart you can see that their left hands are both very close to the ASL letter signs. Their expressionless faces are also consistent with ASL afaik. My question for any ASL people still stands. Google is *useless* for ASL queries. www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=121 ...ASL?
