I wonder what language they coded this "program" in.... E++? APL. Classical APL, using the special keyboard that classical APL requires. Anyone who's seen a large complex APL program will understand... (But not be able to read the code. APL is a write-only language.)

Its would be awesome to have seen the Donlans developing the program. The "debugging", where bugs could literally be the stuff outta Zimmy's head. Hey, that's not such a bad thought. If you can write programs that interact with space and matter, a tiny little bug may very well lead to time/space rifts. Before we know it the Borg could assimilate the Court.

Mind you, Anja just told us that the pendant is a link to the computer, not just the program itself. But... but... a softlink only works inside a framework... lines of code only execute inside an engine... The program is a firewall. It occupies virtual space. Gunnerkrigg occupies virtual space.

I should point out that we don't know that the program is etheric. It could use force fields and holograms. After all if Kat can make anti gravity, there is no reason to believe that such science would be beyond the capabilities of her parents.

Okay, I kind of get what you're saying, but I guess I have to explain my end. Let's assume that Reyardine, being rather ancient (and blessed with a gift from Coyote), is not affected much (if at all) by most magic. Let's also assume that it would take a very complicated spell in order to restrain him. So complicated, in fact, that it's difficult or even impossible for someone to pull it off quickly enough to snatch Reynardine before he has time to make an escape. My theory, in a nutshell, is that the computer runs a source code equivalent of an incantation. The incantation is transmitted through the pendant, and Anja channels her magic through the pendant when using her magic against Reyardine. Computers (assuming Anja's computer is not magical in of itself) can't think creatively, but they are capable of doing any straightforward task extremely fast. I imagine the computer is being used here as a major time saver, enabling Anja to instantly call upon a spell that would normally take considerable time and preperation, not to mention memorization. The pendant itself might not even be magical at all, but just a very advanced wireless linkup.

If the symbol is the program, and the program is present in the cell where Reynardine was held, how come he could jump from his body? Beta version? forgot to apply a security patch?

Hard or impossible to keep stable for a long time, I'd say.

The pendant itself might not even be magical at all, but just a very advanced wireless linkup. I see. However, I don't see how said program can manipulate the environment in the absence of an ether of some kind. But... maybe it's not important to the story, because the j argon jargon babble babble is manipulating the strange words.
