True, but she is allowed to keep him in his current form. If Rey could wander free, he'd be locked up again, or be denied a body. But now we know he killed a man, and took the Rogat Orjaks body. I wonder if Coyote was aware of that last body-snatch.
It strikes me that in the beginning of the story Reynardine was depicted as a demon who cannot survive without a body. But now he seems much more like that. In-story character shift, of part of a bigger plan? Only Tom can tell.
In my view, the only reason why Reynardine is so kind and protective to Annie, is because of his past relationship with Surma. Can't wait for that story to be told.

ZOMG potentially explosive information coming up.
So who's "that young man"?
I think she meant, why was rey being help prisoner before, by Eglamore.
I'm assuming we're going to find out how Reynardine got the way he is pretty soon. I wouldn't be surprised if Coyote tried granting him power against his wish and screwed it up somehow- when he messed up creating humans he made the glass-eyed men, so maybe messing up a God makes something like Reynardine.

I'm confused by Annie needing to ask the question. Eglamore's explanation here is perfectly reasonable, and as for holding him beyond that, he's shown himself already to Annie willing to effectively kill with both his possession of Sivo and his attempt to possess Annie, and we don't generally let unrepentant murderers run around free, simply for the safety of those around us.

Or maybe she's assuming that Sivo was possessed by Reynardine after he was already a prisoner. If that's true, then presumably Rey was in the body of the "young man" at the time.

Oh crap: Rey killed Mort.
...Have the two ever interacted in-comic?
EDIT: Unless Coyote means Sivo when he says "young man." I imagine most GODS think of most mortals as "young."

I am betting the 'real' truth is in what Coyote is not telling. Like how he reacted to Rey's refusal. I can see Coyote becoming very angry when he doesn't get thing his way.

I think Annie's question is probably referring to the second panel on this page, when Coyote asks Reynardine to come back to the forest, and Reynardine says he can't: "I broke their laws, remember. I couldn't leave even if I wanted to." The "I couldn't leave" part suggests that it's the Court that's keeping him confined (rather than the forest refusing to let him come back, for example) Later ( here), he asks Annie "Aren't you going to ask me what I did? What law I broke?" On a different note, that's sweet that Reynardine didn't want to lose his friends (assuming that what Coyote says is accurate, which I guess is a pretty big assumption). He was a pretty fox.

"Killed that young man" surprised me, since so far, there's been no hint of that character in the comic. Now, if Coyote had said "killed that young woman", I can easily guess where all the speculation would have turned to.
And did Reynardine kill the young man in a straightforward way (using whatever body he was in at the time, whether his original fox-form, Sivo's body, or something else to do it), or did he do so by possessing him and then leaving his body? (As I've mentioned before, I think that Sivo must not have been the first of Reynardine's victims; there must have been earlier ones for Eglamore to know what becomes of those people Reynardine possessed after abandoning their bodies for new ones.)

Oh crap: Rey killed Mort. As unlikely as that seems, I find this to be the most likely explanation.

Diego!
(actually, I think it's more likely that the "young man" is someone we haven't been introduced to yet)

I hadn't considered that possibility! Wait, Renardyne kills his old host whenever he moves to a new one...could he have at one point possessed a man? Would that explain how he made friends among the humans?

Oh crap: Rey killed Mort. ...Have the two ever interacted in-comic? My thoughts as well. I'll try to look through the archive a bit to see if there's any interaction between them. True that Mort was never a student in the court, but if the victim was an adult and not a child then it could still be him.

True that Mort was never a student in the court, but if the victim was an adult and not a child then it could still be him. I think Jones at one point referred to Mort as a boy. Besides, he doesn't seem like he has much experience as a ghost, which leads me to believe that he hasn't been a ghost for that long.

Renard looks more wolfic than foxic to me. Apart from the colour scheme he looks like his current wolf form.

Anyone think the "young man" that Coyote is talking about might be Annie's dad? As someone else mentioned, even a middle aged mortal would seem "young" to a god.
Of course, that implies that Annie would end up not ever meeting up with her dad, and I've always had the impression that she would. Maybe she will meet with his ghost? Eh... it's unlikely, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Eh... it's unlikely, but I thought I'd throw it out there. That was my knee-jerk response. "Killed young man - ANTHONY OMGBBQ." Logically speaking, probably not, but still - what if? To the Mort contingent - that would be amazing. I hadn't thought of it, but now that you mention...that strikes me as possible. Very, very possible. I knew we'd be finding out what law Reynardine broke, and it's very exciting. =) I love 'Nard. Also, why? From what we've seen of Reynardine, the only reason he would kill someone (other than to body-jump) would be if Surma was in trouble.

Rey had been in Sivo's body for over five years when Annie first met him. I don't see how he could have possibly killed Anthony without Annie noticing.

I think she meant, why was rey being help prisoner before, by Eglamore. I agree with shovel18 that she was trying to find out what law Rey broke. But from her perspective, that's not why he's being held. So Annie is being deliberately deceptive here.

Foxes are smaller than wolves too, feed on smaller animals and don't organize in packs.

Fair point - but how much was Anthony actually at the hospital? He didn't appear in any of the flashbacks, and we've been led to believe that he'd duck in and out of his various obligations fairly frequently.

Did Diego look that young? Of course, Coyote might be speaking from the perspective of a trickster-god who'd been around for untold ages when he used that word. (Much like Treebeard in "The Lord of the Rings" speaking of "young Saruman".)

Does anyone really want to take a vote on who they reckon the victim was? My lack of forum-going skills prevents me from creating one, but it would be interesting to see what results we get over the weekend and check in on Monday. If Coyote reveals it to us then.

It could very well be Diego, but I'm still going to go with my first guess and say Mort. Note that Coyote never says the young man killed was a student of the court (or he hasn't yet, anyway). EDIT: and just to keep conspiracy valves open, I'm still not fully dismissive of the possibility that Coyote means Sivo. Depends on how literally you take the word "man." My rationale is this; because how (or even if) Diego died has not been addressed; although the same is true of Mort, the one thing we really know of his origins is that he is quite clearly dead. Heck, the fact that his death has remained a mystery thus far only adds a point in favor, in my opinion. EDIT: Does anyone really want to take a vote on who they reckon the victim was? My lack of forum-going skills prevents me from creating one, but it would be interesting to see what results we get over the weekend and check in on Monday. If Coyote reveals it to us then. Has any plot point EVER been resolved that fast? I suppose we can still dream...

No, not Sivo. Sivo was merely a vessel he used in order to escape the Court's power, but Reynardine was imprisoned there when Sivo was captured to keep Reynardine from getting away.
