"Antimony."
"Yes, father?"
"You're still grounded."
Slowly closes the door on her.

"Antimony." "Yes, father?" "You're still grounded." Slowly closes the door on her. Geez. It does interests me most what Tony has to say. 'Be careful'? 'I need to go to to ascertain your safety'? 'I trust in your ability to succesfully complete this mission'?

Calling it now:
“Antimony - you have no idea how proud of you I am. Coming clean like that and accepting personal physical and social risk for the greater good? Taking such responsibility for your own actions? Well done. You’ve grown up so much, and I love you.”
- followed by the entire forum dying of shock.

Considering how Annie reacted the last time she got a compliment from her father, she'd probably die of shock right along with the rest of us.

"Don't forget to put on a scarf, it can be chilly in the forest." Coming from Tony, I think that would be the equivilent of giving her a massive hug. I think he is going to mention her mother, again. And we will see whether that gives her more resolve, or causes her to break down. Hopefully the former, we need to see more of her being badass and she has had enough beat-downs

'Be careful'? 'I need to go to to ascertain your safety'? 'I trust in your ability to succesfully complete this mission'? He's going full Gendou Ikari on her, mark my words! Also, how Mighty Biceps is going to bip them all out, without Mighty Eyebrows around?

'When you return from the forest, there is the matter of the poor quality of your homework we shall have to discuss.'
But I hope he's going to give Antimony some sort of ether-based weapon that he devised when he was away from the court. Just because I think that would be a cool thing.

I wonder if he's going to give her back her makeup. This seems to be foreshadowed by the "moment to get ready" in her room thing; if the comic just meant "let me get the knife", Annie might well have just said that. It's not as though Annie habitually has to perform a ritual or anything before she can use her power.
No, seriously. We've had endless theoretical speculation about whether the makeup actually represents some sort of real metaphysical power over and above simple feminine adornment, especially focusing on the tradition of eyeblack as metaphysical protection. In a way, Anthony taking Annie's makeup was like Delilah cutting Samson's hair. He made her powerless.
Even if this is not a factor, I still suspect Annie's maturity may have convinced him she's a completely different personality, and he may have come to realise he's being an arsewomble about the whole thing.

Tony is using this opportunity to catch Annie alone on the stairwell, and apply the same mind control drug he used on Surma and Kat.

Oh, he's known all along he was an arsewomble about the whole thing. He just hasn't done anything about it. I don't think it's the makeup though. The makeup is an ambiguous symbol. It's "Annie's thing" as Kat put it, but it's also a mask. She didn't wear it when she was alone at the Court during her first summer vacation, or when she was in the Forest during her second one. And I don't think she's been powerless for a while. She regained her focus, her confidence and her fire already. I agree with you he is probably looking at his daughter very differently by now. I'm hoping for words of ackowledgement. Maybe even - gasp - affection.

Anthony with his face hidden, portrayed as a tall figure in shadow framed by a doorway ... Call back to "Guy Who Walked Out Of The Court Meeting About Trapping Jeanne In The Ravine"? From the chapter with Diego's Tiny Video Robot memories? The artillery guy? Maybe?

If Tony says anything salty, I will be done with him. He's a great character but by god, he's an awful character. I could probably write a dissertation how much he sucks. In fact, I will be done with him if the first words out of his mouth aren't "I apologize for immediately abandoning you when your mother died, seeing you only as an avatar of your deceased mother, humiliating you in front of everyone for no reason, locking you away in the big white hallway from Resident Evil 5, being emotionally distant and generally a horrible father, and" (although this one's iffy) "conceiving you in the first place." An apology is way overdue. Tony sucks. I'm sorry. I had to get that out of my system. I get PO'd every time he opens his dumb mouth.

From the chapter with Diego's Tiny Video Robot memories? The artillery guy? Maybe? Compare the heights vs the door frames, Artilleryman isn't actually that tall, although we can't tell if the doors are the same size or not. Here is another reference page for him.. and honestly, the way he's drawn there makes me wonder if he's an actual toy soldier...

Oh and also by the way I think this is a suicide mission, I can't believe the adults are agreeing to it, I can't BELIEVE Tony and Jones' reaction to all this is just "Sure, fine," and I also can't believe everyone is just taking Annie's word that she can communicate with Ysengrin. This is all SO silly. I guess Eglamore is the only one who knows what happened the last time Annie was confident she could communicate (Annie: "Please calm down!" Ysengrin: "RAAAAAAAAAAA!"), but that's still no excuse for this nonsense. Tony has gone from "I'll keep Annie from the forest because she's not safe there because the gods get so angry" to "Well, a furiously angry god just attacked the court, I'll immediately let my daughter go try to calm him down." Tony sucks. They shouldn't be allowing Annie to do this, but I guess the plot has to chug along somehow.

Antimony is the one person at the Court who's ever gotten through to Ysengrin's gentler side, gotten past his grim exterior. She's the one person who has any hope whatsoever of reaching him. If she can't succeed, the Court has no hopes of settling this problem with Ysengrin peacefully.

The in character equivalent for Tony to say all that is: "you did good" Now that I think about it, at #1000 we had the first confirmation that Antimony's father was alive. I bet that at #2000 we will see the last of Anthony Carver. He'll die and it'll probably be protecting Annie from Coywolf (cue major shock for Annie to lose her father just a few hours after the first sign of affection she'd received from him)

I feel like Tony's about to make me cry. I swore "Never again". Damn you, Carver... Annie has grown a lot. Maybe, he has too, and will be able to not be a complete craphat to her. I can see a small objective list of her recent growths, with a small aside of his emotional state towards her, being in his wheelhouse.
It would be interesting, if Eggs decides to pop in, and tried to dissuade them.

As I said a few threads ago, I could not believe Kat's parents were letting her stay behind directly at the border where the next attack might hit. Now, Annie has at least someone with her, and I dare say an immortal, indestructible being is not the worst escort. Also, I have a strong feeling if they said no, Annie would go alone and try anyway. Tony and Jones are not dumb, they know enough about Annie to assume the same. This way, they can at least assure she has *some* protection.

Also, Tony will on the next page tell Annie:
IT'S DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE. TAKE THIS. and hand her a sword (with a small Omega engraved?).
--- Anyway, whatever you are going say, Tony, please do not screw up.

They trust Annie's word because she has built a solid relationship with Ysengrin and many other Forest creatures, because she has years of experience dealing with them now, including when they're at their worst. With both Parley and Jones around, Annie has a good exit plan in case Ysengrin has a fit of rage. Frankly I love this development. Everything Annie has done and learned until now is leading up to this. I sure don't want her to stay at home with some cocoa while it becomes "Gunnerkrigg Court: a story about adults dealing with everything while the kids go to math classes and play cards".
