Haha, I'm assuming she has seen Ketrak before and wasn't very fond of the experience?
Although I really doubt there haven't been any bugs dying in their vicinity anyways.

Babies? I don't think beetles work that way... No, but bot flies do (although they usually use mosquitoes as a vector)

The Omega experiment went wrong. Surma's DNA was mixed with the fly's. In panel 4, we see her growing additional limbs.

I don't think Surma has a problem with Ketrak himself. She must see him pretty often anyway, insects die all the time everywhere. But knowing insects have their own afterlife guide might make her value their lives more. I can imagine Surma as someone who doesn't want to kill bugs.

I think this page looks the most manga-like of the whole comic.

Surma--you've got a bit on anime there on yo--y'know what never mind. you're fine. Hopefully the freak out is not because of Ketrak because that just wouldn't make any sense. She's very concerned about the babies specifically--I think this is where we learn she really wants to be a mom. maybe this is also where we learn if Jimmy Jims is going to be an obstacle in that.

Surma is me everytime I see a bug. Only I would be telling Tony to step on them, not to NOT step on them.

Then again, we don't know how Surma feels about the guides at all at this point in her life. Remember, Antimony, while unfazed by them, had a major grudge against them. And she seems a lot more... spastic? I could easily see this as being fueled by fear of Ketrak (if she really doesn't like bugs, then she probably really wouldn't like whatever Ketrak is).
I'm also suspiciously eyeing that rock behind Tony's foot. What if he falls, and then she falls on top of him? I hear that's how babies get made.

uuuh, what is going on with the landscape here? Between panel 4 and 6, while we are viewing the scene from almost the same location and angle (see clipboard orientation), the larger background rock behind Tony has crept away, and an entire green hill has slumped/subsided behind him. Artistic slip-up? Artistic license? Omega effect at work???

This page is significant because it is the first time that Surma has touched Tony. He's touched her a couple of times, but she's never touched him before.

For someone who doesn't like bugs, Ketrak must be the most terrifying of the Guides.

I cannot imagine Surma hasn't witnessed dozens of insect deaths since the start of the expedition. Wherever there are many insects, there are many other animals who eat them. In a jungle like this, Ketrak must be very busy and often near the of them. So, either... ...she has seen him already and is not bothered by his appeareance. ...or she IS bothered by it and Ketrak does not turn visible for her. ...or she does not know him him yet. uuuh, what is going on with the landscape here? Oh snap Surma is going to FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAK OUT, trip, and fall into or together down with Tony, starting off their hot, steamy, awkward teen romance. Last Panel --> Close Enough

I wonder if it's just a case of insects dying on their own vs. a human (with ether affinities) deliberately stepping on one?
If I recall correctly anybody can see the guides if they choose to be visible (even Kat). It always seemed like Annie could just see them whenever they appeared (e.g. a fly being killed by a spider -> "Hello Ketrak"), but maybe the guides just chose to make themselves visible to her, to sooth her anger or whatever. So there is a chance Surma never met one before.

Surma has good mothering instincts- I'm sure those will come in handy later.
