Annie is just a little out of control. The beans haven't been cooled in ages. We're reaching critical levels of reheated beans.

One internet to everyone who can come up with a unique, work-safe, and plausible theory of what Antimony is examining while crouching in panel #1. [edit] Example 1. She is checking Kat's lab coat pocket for a bulge that might indicate the presence of a cursed teapot. [/edit] Annie is just a little out of control. The beans haven't been cooled in ages. We're reaching critical levels of reheated beans. The beans have lost structural integrity due to heat, diffusion and decay processes.

I don't want to knock on Tom's story writing or anything but if this ends with forced "Anthony is just misunderstood but a good guy" then I am really going be pissed.
I do have faith in Tom though.

It's simple, Kat is the Anthony whisperer.

Kat, being scrutinised by the Three Wise Annies.
Bear in mind that Don has already revealed a side to Tony that Annie was unlikely to see normally, and hasn't excused his actions.
At least Annie isn't collapsing in on herself because another anger channeling horcrux has been neutralised. Who is she dragging Kat off to, though? Rey?

I pretty much guessed this would go to a more lighthearted direction this time around. We've had our share of drama about Tony for awhile.
And in hindsight, it actually makes sense for Kat to like him if she got through her initial prejudice. Apart from them sharing mutual interests, Tony actually resembles Annie quite a bit on terms of personality, both in good and bad, and Kat has a lot of experience in getting along with her.

Maybe Anthony, instead of being a misunderstood but basically good guy, will be revealed as a misunderstood but fundamentally flawed guy.

And Tony's best friend is Kat's dad, who shares many personality traits with his daughter. And they both have an intense interest in science. It's not that it doesn't make sense, but it's still a kind of betrayal of Annie to become buddy with her father after everything that happened, and not even tell her. Still I'll forgive everything, if this leads to Tony having an actual conversation with Annie.

Annie, to Anthony, represents a constant physical reminder of his utter failure as a father (since he abandoned and then accidentally almost killed her), and his utter failure as a "brainiac genius scientist" (since he couldn't save Surma). Plus, she looks a lot like Surma, possesses half her "soul" (the fiery part) and at least some of her personality traits (e.g., being sometimes a bit manipulative, but also a good friend). Anthony has not yet come to terms with all this - he just can't *deal* with it - and since he has a hard time with strong emotions anyway, it all comes out in a very awkward, warped relationship with his daughter. Doesnt excuse what he's done, but sorta explains it.
Maybe a good talk with Rey (or Donald?) will help begin a reconciliation and healing process(?)

If she needs a spell cancelled, she's got a lot of options. Rey maybe. Jenny would be a good choice. Eglamore or Jenny's hypothetical teacher would know too, but Annie doesn't ask adults for help. Zimmy, if she wants to call in the big guns.

Kat: "Also, he knows this really cool hairdresser!" The hairstyling is what's tipped Annie off to the brainwashing. Peering into the ether, she can see the Angel side of Kat, cut off. Been there. Done that.

What Kat means is, "Annie your dad is comfortable when working, and a pretty cool guy when he's comfortable. Unfortunately he's a freaked out psycopath when it comes to you."
Kat needs to figure out really quick that Tony won't interact with Annie and not let Annie see Kat as having what she's always wanted.
You don't have to do actually wrong things to be a terrible friend Kat, and Tony is actively, although not likely intentionally making you a bad friend.
Have fun dancing in the minefield.
Holding out hope Kat realizes what is going on and uses her leverage with Tony to make him actually have a conversation with his own daughter.

Tony is a huge science nerd. His best friend Donny is a huge science nerd. Kat is a huge science nerd, and she is best friends with Annie, who resembles her father in a lot of her personality. Per se, it's very probable Kat and Tony could get along well. It's only Kat seemingly forgetting all her rage against Tony that's hard to buy. I can imagine he was able to explain (and Kat was able to understand) how repeating year 9 will really benefit Annie in the long run (which it definitely will, now that she finally studies earnestly). I cannot imagine he was able to explain his cold and dismissing behaviour towards Annie, at least not without a lot of booze involved. And I am very curious if Kat did confront him about this. I wonder if Annie thinking of brainwash is indicative of her thinking more like a forest person and less like a Court person? (By the way, Kat's hairstyle on this page is very similar to now, isn't it?) Also, now I imagine Annie taking Kat to the Court's hospital to have her examined, and the doctor on duty being...Dr. Carver.

There goes Annie, thinking like a forest person again.--Edit: ah haha, ninja'd by Pyradonis. That's what happens when I take too long to hit the post button
While I'm glad to see Annie hasn't gone into shut-down mode, this reaction seems over the top. Annie doesn't actually want an explanation, she wants it fixed.

Considering their personalities, it is reasonable that Kat and Tony would eventually get along. However, the whole thing is still a delicate situation; considering family death, near magical manslaughter, shared soul fragments, failed Ether experiments, Schizoid personality complications, and abandonment issues. Add seeing you best friend pal around with your distant only-remaining parent, and I doubt I'd be handling it as well as Annie.

I really hope this means some catharsis is coming soon. Like, maybe Anthony re-enters the lab to pick up something he forgot, Annie has a meltdown/explosion in front of him, and he realizes "Holy crap, I'm a horrible human being for doing this to my daughter", or else Kat calls him out for doing this to her and refuses to work with him any further until he sits down and has a talk with Annie that's more than sitting there acting like a pair of robots. (Seriously, people theorized Jones was a robot for years, and nobody made the same argument about Anthony. Weird.)
My point is: some form of release would be nice at this point.

This page, in a way, is kind of a nice callback to Divine (page 1042). Kat WANTS to say she hates Anthony, but restrains herself, admitting that she's never met him. Now, after only a short time spent with him in person, her opinion is quite different. I like how those two years-apart pages tie into each other.
Also, I want to know what Tony said to make Kat laugh about that. He REALLY doesn't seem like a funny guy. The only joke we've ever seen him make is that time he quipped about Feng Shui.

There was also the "get that into my house" comment about the bottle Donny brought with him. I'm sure Tony has tons of dry jokes like these up his sleeve. It's a shame Annie is the main protagonist so we don't ever get to see them, haha... ha... *sigh* Oh, I wonder if he is cracking the odd joke here and there in Kat's biology class, making the class uncomfortably torn between laughing at his jokes and low-key hating him for his treatment of Annie
